COORDINATING PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

THE IMPORTANCE OF REGULAR ATTENDANCE Any employer knows how important it is to have staff whom you can rely on to turn up and not take days off unnecessarily. I know that some employers are more interested in attendance patterns at school than anything else. They know that students who get into the habit of missing school take that same habit into the workforce. For students seeking employment having “unexplained absences” on their report can be the difference between employment and unemployment. That is not the only good reason why regular attendance should be made a high priority. A recent research project in Western Australia also showed a clear link between absences and academic performance. A comparison of the NAPLAN results of more than 400,000 Western Australian students and their record of attendance found that almost any absence from school causes a decline in average academic achievement on NAPLAN tests. Students in country schools are at a disadvantage as they need to miss classes when involved in extra-curricular activities such as sport, music and spiritual formation opportunities such as the Street Retreat. Students need to have these opportunities to develop holistically. However, if they also miss school to attend concerts in Sydney and go on family holidays, it will have an impact on their academic achievement. For this reason parents have to consider whether the savings achieved by taking holidays in school time are worth the potential education cost to their children. Having said that, I understand that some families do not have the option of taking family holidays during term breaks as this is the busiest time for businesses involved in tourism related activities. Given the strong link between attendance and academic achievement, it would be negligent of us as educators to take a soft approach. We are, therefore, reluctant to approve leave for purposes other than illness, compassionate reason or extra-curricular commitments for a limited range of activities. Mr Jim O’Brien Coordinating Principal

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

This Thursday St Joseph’s Regional College community welcomed Fr James Forster, Mr Jim O’Brien, Mr John McQueen, 2013 College Dux, Andrew Newbound and families of Year 12 students to gather for our Graduation Assembly. I invite you to read my College Address below:

I would also extend a special welcome to our special guests and to our parents who are with us for the last time today. Thank you for your loyalty and support for our wonderful College. On behalf of the SJRC community, I would like to congratulate the wonderful contribution Year 12 has made to enriching St Joseph’s Regional College traditions. Indeed, it is noteworthy to recognise this group of young adults as being the first cohort to commence and complete their secondary education at the new St Joseph’s Regional College after the College was relocated from the Warlters Street site. Now as they gather here for their final assembly, I believe it is fitting to say that these young adults have made a profound contribution to the College’s rapid transformation. In this regard I would like to pay special tribute to our elected Year 12 leaders:

To Captains; Lisa and Shaun, we thank you for your great service and loyalty to our community. To our Vice Captains, Britney and Jamie, you have been a great support in your roles. To House Captains: Flinders: Laura and MacKenzie Macquarie, Lelani and Joshua Innes: Galina and Sam and Oxley, Jessica and Alec: you have simply been tremendous. I can only say that Year 12 as a whole has been an exceptional group whose families, here today, should feel justifiably proud. I would also like to extend a special thank you to key staff members who have been instrumental in Year 12’s achievements as senior leaders. To Year 12 Coordinator Mr Smith, who has really got to know all of you so well by sharing an Elephant at his table. No doubt, Mr Smith’s highly relational leadership style has been an essential ingredient in your ongoing success. To Coordinating Principal Mr Jim O’Brien who has made such a significant contribution to St Joseph’s Regional College since its inception. Jim, on behalf of our Year 12 students and their families, thank you and we wish you well for your retirement at the end of this year. To Assistant Principal, Mrs Eichmann, Leaders of Evangelisation and Catechesis, Ms Swain and Mrs Gilbert, Leader of Curriculum, Mr Lutton, and PC teachers: Mrs Pares, Mr Handley, Mr Plunkett, Mrs Shipton, Mr Shelley, Mr West, Mrs Croft and Mr Jennings … thank you for your dedication and the love you have shown for this wonderful group of young people. To all course teachers, thank you for your expertise, persistence and support, not only during Year 12’s senior years, but throughout their entire time here at St Joseph’s Regional College. To Year 12 parents, thank you for entrusting your sons and daughters to our care, and guiding them through this most important part of their lives. Year 12, last night at the Graduation Mass Fr. James reminded you of the fire of the Holy Spirit that has been ignited in your hearts as a part of your formation as young adults. I have every confidence that you will carry this flame with you as a means of nurturing your own faith and making our world a better place. Over the coming weeks, Year 12, be assured that Jesus will be walking humbly and quietly beside you providing you with the courage and confidence to be true witnesses of Christ’s love as a result of all your learning over these years. I hope that, over the next few weeks, you will be able to approach your exams in as relaxed a manner as possible, confident and determined to demonstrate all that you have learned. It is important to remember that there is life after the HSC and that there are many pathways to the careers you might wish to pursue. The world is still a place of great adventure. You will encounter all kinds of exciting things as you move beyond College. But it remains a world awaiting your energy, your dedication and your generosity of heart. May God bless you in your endeavours.

NEWS FROM OUR LEADER OF CATECHESIS AND EVANGELISATION Year 8 Religious Education Test: Wednesday 8th October Each year the Lismore diocese participates in the Religious Education Test distributed through the Catholic Education Office in Sydney. This is a similar type of test the students from our Catholic feeder schools completed in Year 6. There are fifty multiple choice questions on a variety of topics from the RE syllabus. It does not count towards students yearly report card mark but does provide information to students and staff about the knowledge of Religious Education topics and how teaching and learning strategies can be enhanced. Students have been doing practice question in class and there are also sample questions on the Moodle site. The test will be the first day back next term: Wednesday October 8th. Students are required to have a 2B or B pencil, eraser and a novel to read if they finish early. Students with special needs undertake the test with the same level of assistance that they normally receive in the classroom. “Love in a Shoe Box” Thank you to all our Pastoral Care groups who participated in the Operation Christmas Child project. In our school community, we usually call it Love in a Shoe Box. This is a unique project which brings God’s hope and joy to children living in very challenging and desperate situations in over 100 countries. Some of these children may never have received a gift like this ever before. What a wonderful way to share the spirit of Christmas! Thank you Ignite Nineteen of our students are travelling to the Ignite Conference in Brisbane over the school holidays along with Mr Michael Morson and Miss Hannah O’Brien. There will be over 200 students from across the diocese attending this annual event. It is the largest Catholic Youth conference of its kind in Australia. The conference includes lives bands, guest speakers, workshops, worship and prayer. We wish the group safe travels and hope they will be able to share their experience on their return.

Proclaim Lismore Parents 2014

In the latest edition of the Proclaim Lismore Parents e-bulletin, we ask the question: “What does it look like when parents, teachers and the parish work together to create an environment that fosters collaboration, communication and community?” We take a closer look at parent-teacher partnership in one of our schools: St Joseph's Primary School, Maclean.

Please ensure you register your interest in attending the Proclaim Parent Gatherings 2014 which will be held over six separate days across the Diocese of Lismore in October (numbers are limited).

Proclaim Lismore 2014 is an unprecedented opportunity to join with us as partners in co-designing an even stronger and more effective Catholic schooling for each child.

Please visit the Proclaim Lismore website to find out more: www.proclaimlismore.com.au or subscribe to our monthly e-bulletins by emailing [email protected].

PARENT INVITATION TO PROCLAIM LISMORE PARENTS 2014 GATHERINGS

The Lismore Diocese sincerely want parents to be partners in designing a new vision for Catholic schools in the future.

To do this we need to hear your voice during this unique conversation between parents, the Director of Catholic Schools and his Executive Team at the Proclaim Lismore Parents 2014 gatherings.

The gatherings are a series of community forums spanning how we run our schools, what role religion plays, how we can better educate our children and above all, how we can equip our children for a fulfilling life beyond school.

The evening will be held on 14th October at St Joseph’s Primary School and will run from 5.30pm – 6.15pm for a BBQ dinner followed by the community forums from 6.15pm – 9.00pm.

CURRICLUM NEWS

Attention Year 10 students and parents

THE FACTS ABOUT THE IMPORTANCE OF ‘WRITING RIGHT’

Students will do 12-14 units in the Preliminary Course and 10-12 in the HSC. The only subject that does not require writing tasks is Maths.

English is not the only subject that requires essays.

Practical subjects and science based courses still require written responses. They may not be essays, but they will require STRUCTURED written responses, often extended.

Example - PDHPE has a minimum 12 essays. These are assessment tasks only and this DOES NOT include class tasks, drafts, sample answers. To do well in the HSC, a realistic figure of written responses to be completed would be approximately 80-100. This is for one subject only

75% of HSC exams will be writing 3-4 essays, which include 3-4 pages each.

95% of your tasks will require structured written responses.

Whilst most students choose to drop a course in Year 12, this does not mean written responses/tasks will ‘drop’. On the contrary, they will increase as you prepare responses for your teacher to mark and check.

THE BOTTOM LINE: LEARNING HOW TO PREPARE AND WRITE ‘RIGHT’ IS THE KEY TO ACHIEVING YOUR BEST IN THE HSC.

When: Every MONDAY (From Week 2 Term 4)

Where: GL8

When: Lunch time

What: Learn how to prepare written responses for ALL subjects.

Bring your lunch…lollies provided!

PEN 2 PAPER WRITERS GROUP Pen 2 Paper Writer's Group: Continues to meet Thursday lunch times in GL8. The small group of writers that meet are producing some great examples of micro writing tasks. This Thursday the group has a short recess while Year 8's are on camp. We will reconvene NEXT THURSDAY WEEK 10.

MUSIC NEWS Battle of the Bands 2014

Thanks to the initiative of our student leaders, working with the student leaders from other schools in the area, St Joseph's Regional were excited to host the first inter-school Battle of the Bands last Friday night.

With St Columba Anglican School, MacKillop Senior College and Camden Haven High School up against The Regional, the musical battle was intense with extreme talent displayed by every act of the night. Each school presented two bands, who each performed two songs judged by a panel of representative staff from each school. Everyone was wowed by the music and a huge congratulations goes to the winners:

First Place: Bowley and the Boys (St Joseph's Regional College)

Second Place: The Corbetts (MacKillop Senior College)

Third Place: equal place 2x2 (Camden Haven High School) and Stage Band (St Columba Anglican School)

Finally, my sincerest thanks to the students who made this happen and to the staff who supported and present on the night: supervising, manning the gates, cooking the BBQ and managing the music. A special thank you to Mrs Leanne Johnson and team for their musical know-how and time; without which we could not have had such a successful night - thank you again.

Mr Daniel O'Mullane, Organiser HSC Music Congratulations! Last week Year 12 music students completed their practical component of the HSC exam. All the students were happy with their performances and enjoyed the experience.

Coast to Country Rugby Union

On Tuesday, 16th September the SJRC under 16s Rugby Union team travelled to Forster to participate in the NSW Coast to Country Rugby Union finals. This competition consisted of the top two schools in each region of NSW outside of Sydney. Throughout the day, 89 games were played within 3 divisions, including under 14s and 16s boys as well as an under 16s girls competition. The SJRC boys came up against St Pius Adamstown, Terrigal High School, St Johns Woodlawn and Macksville High School. Despite some strong defensive efforts and well-structured attack through our backline, the boys did not make it through to the finals. The highlight of the day came off the back of a full team effort which started with a 14 man line-out on the oppositions try line. This was taken early and the defence had little response when this developed into a 14 man rolling maul which bulldozed its way over the line for Fynn Marshall to score. Over our 4 games our MVP's were Vincent Behan and Ben Schneider.

Team List; Kaes Besseling, Tate Rissel, Cale Harrison, Dylan Wilkins, Samuel Gleeson, Kyle Blanch Connor Tamblyn, Jack Steinmetz, Sam Woods, Lewis McKechnie, Vincent Behan, Gus McPhail, Fynn Marshall, Blake Wells Nathan Cameron, Jamie Williams, Mackye Shore, Caleb Smith and Ben Schneider
