St. Joseph Parish The Vigil July 12th, 2020 ROONEY TUNES SACRED LITURGY: Last week I wrote a wee bit on the Mass. Issues surrounding the celebra- on of Mass were the focus of much debate and discussion during the coronavirus lock- down. In the minds of many, these discussions are not likely to go away. The fact that people have been deprived of Mass physically for some months, gives rise to the quesons about the centrality of Mass in the life of believers. I had shared with you paragraph 10 of the Va- can II document on the Liturgy: “the liturgy is the foundaon and summit of all that we do.” The pandemic has called many of us to reflect on the meaning of the Mass. Recently I was reading an interview with a French Jesuit. On first reading, what he said sounded strange, but on reflecon made a great deal of sense: ‘It seems important to me to stress that, even as Roman Catholics, what saves us and in what we put our faith is not the Mass, but Christ.’ For those of us who have been raised in an environment where the Mass is central to our faith life, the senments of the French priest present a challenge. Truth to tell, difficult though it may be to imagine, not everyone who sits in Mass on a Sunday does so “fully aware of what they are doing, acvely engaged in the rite, enriched by its effects.” Sure, there are mes when I get bored at Mass, but if I don’t go, I close the possibility opened by the repeon of the ritual of experiencing some- thing unexpected. I get bored listening to my- self, so I’ve no reason not to believe that you get bored listening to me! When I ask my own family members why they don’t go to Mass, the usual response is ‘I don’t get anything out of it!’. My retort to them is ‘Well, what do you put into it?’ Then I stand there waing for them to give me an answer. DR. SHEILA CASSIDY: Before assigning herself the tle ‘lapsed Catholic’, Dr. Cassidy wrote a book: ‘The Spirituality of Caring’ (Darton, Long- man & Todd, ‘88). In the chapter: Sharing The Darkness, she writes: Slowly, as the years go by I learn about the importance of powerlessness. I experience it in my own life and life with it in my work. The secret is not to be afraid of it – not to run away. The dying know we are not God. They accept that we cannot halt the pro- cess of cancer, the inexorable march of that terrible army that takes over a human body like an occupying force, pillaging, raping, dese- crang without respect and without quarter. All they ask is that we do not desert them: that we stand our ground at the foot of the cross. At this stage of the journey, of being there, of simply being: it is, in many ways, the hardest part. The reason I was so struck by that short paragraph is because I found myself in a similar situaon. Sing at the bedside of a young mother, praying to God that I could think of a word to give her. Wrecking my brains for some pious platude, not so much for the young mother – but for myself! I felt so useless, I wanted to run, to get out of there at any cost. By the grace of God, I didn’t run and sing there in many ways, was the hardest part. FR. MARC GAWRONSKI: Some might remem- ber Fr. Gawronski from the mes he covered for me at the Saturday evening Masses. He has now been assigned as pastor of St. Cyprian, Riverview and Sacred Heart, Grosse Ile. We welcome Marc to the neighbourhood and pray that he’ll be as happy here as he had been on Vernon Highway. Marc is a Spanish speaker, and he’s more than willing to meet with any- one who needs a Spanish speaking priest. God Bless! Stephen Rooney.

ROONEY TUNES SACRED LITURGY: Last week I wrote a wee bit on the Mass. Issues surrounding the celebra-tion of Mass were the focus of much debate and discussion during the coronavirus lock-down. In the minds of many, these discussions are not likely to go away. The fact that people have been deprived of Mass physically for some months, gives rise to the questions about the centrality of Mass in the life of believers. Truth to tell, difficult though it may be to imagine, not everyone who sits in Mass on a Sunday does so “fully aware of what they are doing, actively engaged in the rite, enriched by its effects.” Sure, there are times when I get bored at Mass, but if I don’t go, I close the possibility opened by the repetition of the ritual of experiencing some-thing unexpected. I get bored listening to my-self, so I’ve no reason not to believe that you get bored listening to me! *How the 6th Graders did homeschool over Quarantine!

In Social Studies class, the 6th graders have learned about the first settlers of Australia, called "aborigines", which means "original inhabitants." The students have learned about aboriginal artwork in Australia and have created artwork of their own in the traditional aboriginal style of painting. Students have also taken virtual tours of the Great Barrier Reef during distance learning and learned about Australia's history, govern-ment, economy, and culture.

The Kitchen was closed completely in March- no meals prepared, no clients served and no volunteers allowed into the building. In early April, Dave Allen began to make and distribute bag lunches to 15-30 clients daily. He does not need any volunteer helpers at this time. Also, no definite decision has been made on where to move the Soup Kitchen program. I will stay in touch with Dave to see what his needs are for August. If you have any questions, please call me.
