PARISH ANNOUNCEMENTS To have a prayer added to St. John’s Prayer Chain, please call Shirley 715-384-3613 and Donna 715-384-2479 (there are 2 lists). St. John’s Pastoral elections will be held at all Masses this weekend. This year there are 4 open seats. When you cast your votes please be sure to sign your ballots. The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is beginning on September 8th, 2016 with full entrance into the church occurring at Easter of 2017. RCIA is the process whereby a person learns about the beautiful Catholic faith that we sometimes take for granted. Please pick up a brochure at the entrance of the church if you or someone you know is interested in becoming Catholic or if you just want to deepen your understanding of the faith. This will be an excellent way to grow closer to God by learning about Catholicism and how it promotes heroic goodness! For more information, contact Dcn. Jeff Austin at 715-676-3186 or Jane Gerend at 715-387-2019. Parachute with the Angels and St. Catherine Labouré is the theme of this summer’s Vacation Bible School/Kidz Camp. This camp is for ages 3 through 6th grade and will be held from July 25th - 29th. Needed this year are teen helpers! If you are interested in volunteering or have any questions, call Heather at 715-897-1941. Lady Knight’s Spring Dinner meeting will be held on Tuesday, May 17th, at the John Eisen Corporation – KC Hall. Cocktails will begin at 5:30pm with a dinner at 6:00pm. The cost of the dinner is $7.50. All who plan on attending must make a reservation by calling Joan at 715-389-2025, before Friday, May 13th. Women at the Well (WAW) will meet at 6:30pm in St. Francis Hall on May 19th. Questions? Call Judy at 715-305-2261. The Marshfield Deanery Vocations Society will meet on Friday, May 20th at St. Vincent de Paul at 11:55pm. Our guest speaker is Faith Becker. Faith is a member of Christ the King who is discerning a vocation to Religious life. Lunch will be served. New members are welcome. Please join us in praying for vocations. Attention Engaged Couples: Registration is now open for the Married Love: Two Becoming One classes in Marshfield starting this fall. The dates for 2016-2017 are: August 20th, November 5th, February 18th, and April 8th. Couples should first contact their priest and then plan to attend a class at least six months before their wedding. Register early because classes fill quickly. To register, contact Alanna Hart at [email protected] or 715-650-7310. Thank you to all parishioners who have returned their Diocesan Annual Appeal Pledge Card. We still have $1,764.00 to go in completing our goal for this year’s appeal. If you have not yet made a pledge, please consider doing so. For those that have made pledges, please send in your payments as soon as possible. Age-Related Resources: Anyone can experience age-related uncertainties and challenges. The Aging and Disability Resource Center of Central Wisconsin’s Specialists offer a variety of answers and solutions for individuals, professionals, or concerned friends / family members in Langlade, Lincoln, Marathon, & Wood counties. Our experienced team of professionals can help you or a loved one obtain supportive resources or understand long term care options. We also offer practical healthy living classes and convenient meal services to achieve and maintain an independent lifestyle. Flexible consultation options are available on the phone, at home, or at one of our five offices. Questions? Call us toll free at 1-888-486-9545. Please consider signing up for one hour a week to adore our Lord. Openings are Fri. from 8-9am, Sat. 7-8pm and Sun. 1-2pm at Pope St. John Paul II Chapel. Why Adore: "It is a privilege that I cannot pass up that I could spend personal time with the God of the Universe face to face. Jesus is with us in spirit anytime, anyplace. Here He is with us in full comprehension." Call Jean at 715-387-0571 or Dale at 715-383-2262 for your holy hour or more information.

FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK Praised be Jesus Christ! Periodically it’s a good idea to let you know what we’ve got planned in terms of parish improvements. Now the parish is more than just a pastor who thinks he can function like a Lone Ranger – these days we have consultative bodies known as the Pastoral Council and the Finance Council. Thanks to the prescience of the 2nd Vatican Council, it was rightly concluded that more people see more accurately than just one person. Most of the things a pastor does require some consultation among the people of God so that he rightly reads which way the wind of the Holy Spirit is really blowing. So when you read in these columns about parish projects, please know that both of the aforementioned august bodies have discussed and approved these things (and so has the Diocese of La Crosse). Some of you reading this, because it’s an election year and you’re feeling very inspired by the climate that has engulfed this nation, are wondering how you can make your rise to parish power. It’s easier than you think: simply call the office and submit your name. For the Pastoral Council, we’re expected to have an annual election – the Finance Council members are selected by pastoral appointment. This is a long way of saying you do have a voice in your parish and we love to hear from you (well, that’s not always true – but generally we are open to your insights). Okay, for the record we do have a few things going on around here, not the least of which is the completion of our church basement work. Once we finish I promise we’ll have an “open house” when you can take a look around and see a part of the building that you may never have seen before. We’re presently finishing the north walls – they’re being tuck-pointed now. After that we’ll pour the rest of the floor and then insulate the north wall. The basement was never finished and this will both further strengthen the foundation and lower the cost of heating the church upstairs (incidentally, it’s cost prohibitive to further develop our basement, like the one you’d find at the Shrine of Our Lady of Good Help near Green Bay). On the outside of the church we’re doing some minor repairs of bricks and then we will seal both the church and the rectory. These bricks retain their beautiful color because they’ve been responsibly maintained by this same process many times over the years. Sealing them protects the bricks from water damage for about 10 years. On the north end of the property the Cleveland Street sidewalk will be replaced and a permanent retaining wall installed to protect from erosion. Thanks to our buildings and grounds committee, you’ll see beautification in different areas around the church and rectory. Other improvements that will not be so conspicuous involve replacing the aging blower motor for our beloved pipe organ and moving it inside the church – it’s been in the bell tower for years. And we are working on replacing original wood in the bell tower, one level at a time. Please look at our parish website periodically, as we’ll post pictures from time to time of these projects. And if you ever see something that needs our attention, please let us know. Not every project gets approved, however: my annual attempt to install a hot tub in the attic of the rectory was voted down for the 6th consecutive time... maybe next year – after all, seven is a lucky number! May God send His Holy Spirit deep into your heart and soul, so that you may be humble and wise! Your friend in Christ, Father Martin

Human Trafficking and Sporting Events Traffickers are opportunistic hunters and see major sporting events, and the thousands of people who flock to sports venues, as an opportunity for huge profits with little risk of penalty or punishment. Human trafficking is a business, and traffickers will take advantage of what they perceive to be good business opportunities-including national and international sporting events. Go to the website sistersagainsttrafficking.org…U.S. Catholic Sisters Against Human Trafficking.

NOTES FROM FR. MARTIN Thanks for the memories! Please join me in thanking God for the generous service offered by both Father Maria Dass and Father Kuhn. As announced last weekend, Fr. Maria Dass is moving to La Crosse on May 15th to begin his work at Mayo Franciscan hospital. He’ll move to St. Mary’s in Viroqua and serve the people there as well as the folks in Coon Valley with his Capuchin brother, Father Joseph. Our beloved Father Kuhn is moving to St. Anne’s in Wausau on June 30th where he’ll serve for the next two years. He will be the chaplain at both Newman High School and Newman Middle School – for Columbus fans, this probably stings, as there’s no love for Newman in these parts! We are all better people for having known Fr. Kuhn and he’ll be sorely missed, even in the rectory. And lastly, please pray for our new associate priest, soon-to-be Father Daniel Sedlacek. I’ll give you more information about our new associate in the upcoming weeks. He’ll be ordained a priest in La Crosse on June 25th, so let’s storm Heaven for him with our sincere prayers! St. John’s Book Exchange: Looking for a wonderful way to grow closer to God and His people? Located in the hall leading to the Bride’s room is a new bookshelf laden with books for you and your loved ones. The books are free and meant to be taken and read. We thank God for the folks who made this book exchange possible. So check it out and please adhere to the basic guidelines found on the bookshelf.

“If a man wants to always be in God’s company, he must pray regularly. When we pray, we talk to God. When we read, God talks to us.” ~St. Isidore

Baptism Class for those requesting the baptism of their children will take place Tuesday, June 7th, 5:30-8:00pm in Columbia Room. AREA EVENTS We Respond to Pope Francis’ Request: Join The Movement - Walls of Jericho 2016 Seven Days of Prayer May 16th - 22nd, 2016 Sacred Heart of Jesus Church As the walls of Jericho came down, freeing the Israelites to pursue God's will, so we too pray that the walls that obstruct us from living God's will in our lives may also come down. Thus, in this Jubilee Year of Mercy, may we more fully ask forgiveness for our sins and the sins of the world. To connect and pray please join us and others in praying at Sacred Heart of Jesus Church at 6pm each day, May 16th-21st. We will pray Pope Francis' Year of Mercy Prayer, the Divine Mercy Chaplet, the Hail Holy Queen, and the Our Father. On Sunday, May 22nd, the Feast of the Most Holy Trinity, we will close the Walls of Jericho Seven Days of Prayer with a Eucharistic Procession at noon at Sacred Heart of Jesus Church. Questions, please call Caren Alsides at 715-897-1900. Our Lady of Peace 50th Anniversary Celebration: On June 11th, 2016, Our Lady of Peace Parish will be celebrating the 50th Anniversary of our current church building and the 69th Anniversary of the formation of our Parish at a 4:00pm Mass. We are looking for any photographs/information that would help tell the history of Our Lady of Peace Parish. Examples include: Parish celebration such as sacraments, festivals, etc. or historical pictures of Our Lady of Peace Church building. If you have any information or have question please contact Johanna Holzberger (715-387-8232) or Amy Bauman (715-384-8618, no texts, please). Pilgrimage to India - 2017 Join Fr. Peter Manickam on a trip to North and South India Jan. 4th - 15th in celebration of Mother Teresa’s canonization. The trip will include: Calcutta, New Delii, Jaipur, Chennai, Thanjavur and Kokkudi.
