Pastor’s Desk

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Those of you who subscribed to The Catholic Advocate newspaper or who picked up a copy at the doors of the church know that the paper has ceased circulation as a semi-monthly print edition, and has gone online in a shortened form. A monthly magazine will be published starting this Autumn. Those who held subscriptions in June will automatically receive the new magazine.

The Catholic Advocate July 2013 Online Edition is available by going to www.rcan.org/advocate and click on E-edition. This includes Around the Archdiocese, Clergy Announcements, new pastor profiles, classifieds and display ads. Or paste in your browser http://editions.us.com/catholicadvocate_071713/ to locate the issue.

Perhaps you’ve been watching the events in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, with our Holy Father Pope Francis at World Youth Day activities. Several of our own parish youth and adult chaperones are attending this world-wide event. We are doubly blessed in having our own Bishop Edgar daCunha as part of the celebrations and especially as one of the ‘Bishop-Catechists’ during the Week’s gatherings. Let us affiliate ourselves in prayer with this wonderfully Spirit-filled and joyful event in the life of our Church. May the hearts of all—those gathering in Brazil and those remaining home in prayerful support—be renewed in the Holy Spirit as we all seek to become more and more like our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

You can follow the experience on the Archdiocesan Facebook page www.facebook.com/nwkarchdiocese and Twitter account @NwkArchdiocese using the hashtag #WYDnwkpilgrim. May God bless all on this faith-filled journey!

Banns of Matrimony are announced for the first time between Larissa Adelantar and Ian Leonardo. Anyone knowing any reason why this couple should not be married should speak with me or one of the priests. Msgr. Richard Arnhols, Pastor

Reflection on Today’s Readings

In the delightful story from the book of Genesis, Abraham is presented as being on such intimate terms with God that God not only talks things over with Abraham, but responds to Abraham’s gentle nudging. Notice how Abraham first “draws nearer” to God, asking if God will really sweep away the innocent with the guilty. Then he increases the pressure: “Should not the judge of all the world act with justice?” Quite a bit of chutzpah there! In the end, God momentarily yields to Abraham’s persuasive—and persistent– intercession.

Jesus urges his disciples to persist in prayer to God, after teaching his prayer to them. This great prayer is the basis for our approaching God with persistence. We are told to call God Father, and then to make two prayers of praise and three petitions to God. Those praying move from blessing and praising God’s name and sovereignty to asking for our most basic needs: bread, forgiveness, and deliverance from evil. Jesus follows the gift of his prayer with advice and encouragement.

His advice to persist, his encouragement is to remember that God is a Father who loves his children. God will not refuse the gift of the Spirit to those who have been buried with Christ and have already been raised with him in baptism. As the author of the Letter to the Colossians reminds us, God brought you to life along with Christ even when you were dead in sin. How could God refuse us anything that was truly good for us?

“Lord, may I come to know the truth of the words of today’s response: ‘LORD, ON THE DAY I CALLED FOR HELP, YOU ANSWERED ME.’ May we rest peacefully in that assurance that we have received a Spirit of adoption that allows us to cry, ‘Abba, Father.’”

Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults Our R.C.I.A. helps prepare unbaptized adults to become members of our Faith, baptized Christians of other denominations who desire to convert to Catholicism, and Catholic adults who for some reason did not receive Communion and/or Confirmation when they were younger to complete their Full Initiation. The unbaptized pass through a two year process of information and formation, and those already baptized who have previously had some foundation in Christianity pursue a one year process. The first step is one of Inquiry, where the interested person contacts one of the priests or our deacon to begin a conversation about the reasons for their decision and to offer some background of what has led them to this point. For our English RCIA, please contact either Msgr. Rich or Deacon Jim. For our Spanish RICA, please be in touch with Fr. Jonathan. If you know of someone who might be interested but is not a regular churchgoer, please extend the invitation to them to contact one of us for further information. Religious Education
