A NOTE FROM THE PASTOR’S DESKThe multiplication of loaves and fish is a repeated Gospel because the passage refers to God’s continual gift of the one food we need, the Eucharist. By the time the Gospel of John was finalized, around 90 A.D., the primitive Church had developed a deep understanding of the Eucharist.

This passage is fulfilling the prophetic action we pray in Psalm 23, the Banquet of the Lord, where we say: “The Lord is my shepherd. There is nothing I shall want. He leads me to green pastures and restores my strength…” In today’s Gospel Jesus sees the needs of His people and has them recline on the green grass. He restores their strength with food.

Another emphasis in John’s Gospel is Jesus’ command to gather up the remains. The followers of Christ were entrusted with twelve baskets of bread to be preserved for the people so those who are not present might also eat His food. This is the reason for the importance that the Catholic Church places on the preservation of the Eucharist in our tabernacles. It has biblical basis.

When we receive Communion, we are present at the Banquet of the Lord. We enter the intimate union with God that Jesus came on earth to provide for us. His Body and Blood keep us strong. He gives us strength to proclaim His Kingdom. Hopefully we realize that Holy Communion is more than a blessing or symbol. It is the precise union of God and us. It is the Divine nutritional strength that all serious followers of Jesus need as He restores our strength and guides us along the right path for His names sake. Though we walk in the dark valley, we fear no evil, for His rod and staff give us courage. Only goodness and kindness follow us all the days of our lives and we shall dwell in the House of the Lord forever.

With our Eucharistic theme, this weekend, we need to be aware that the numbers of our Extraordinary Ministers of the Eucharist as Mass are not sufficient. Due to vacations and various reasons, scheduling of the ministers is difficult. We ask that ministers fulfill their ministry as scheduled and, if unable, to get a substitute. We also are appreciative of those ministers who realize there is a shortage at a given Mass and come forward to assist. We are trying different methods to fulfill our needs. A special word of thanks to all the Eucharistic Ministers who cooperate with the schedule and fulfill their ministry. If capable and interested in entering this sacred ministry for our parish, please contact the parish office and you will be interviewed. Thank you to all who serve us in this at the altar.

Our Religious Education office invites interested adults to serve as catechists for our Sunday morning 4-year old classes and Kindergarten classes. Our young Church is in need of faithful adults willing to spend time sharing and discovering God’s love and joy in our creation. If you are interested in serving as a catechist, please contact Mrs. Ballintyn via [email protected] . The classes run from September until April, from 9:30 a.m. -10:30 a.m. each Sunday (we do not have classes on holiday weekends). All materials and instructional supplies are provided. There is great joy in serving as a catechist for this program and so we look forward to welcoming you to our community. Thank you for your willingness to consider this wonderful opportunity to serve.

Along with inviting our adult ministers, we are inviting all families whose children do not attend Catholic school to prayerfully consider joining our Religious Education program. We serve the needs of students from 4-year olds through high school. Our program provides solid instruction and engaging materials to teach as well as form missionary disciples who will serve our Church. Our community is one of faith and joy. Our catechetical staff look forward to welcoming children to this program and we welcome new members to the team. If you are interested in any aspect of our program as a new/returning family and/or as a catechist, please contact Mrs. Ballintyn via [email protected]. More information about our program is located via https://sjbde.org/religious-ed-program God bless you and we look forward to welcoming you and your family to our community of believers.

What an incredible summer it’s already been for our Religious Education Formation (R.E.F.) program. During the week of June 25-29, our Vacation Bible School hosted 40 children who learned about Daniel’s captivity and his courage during this difficult time in Babylon. Through dramatic storytelling, integrated crafts, snacks, games, songs, and learning as a community, the children had a joyful and fun week. This program was hosted almost entirely by high school and middle school students who each day brought much joy and enthusiasm. The young people who lead the children demonstrated each day that our young Church is alive and vibrant. We hope to welcome many more students to the Vacation Bible School program next year.

Thank you from the RE office to all the staff, volunteers and catechists who brought their energy and positivity to these programs. Without our volunteers, we could not host these faithful engagements. Thank you to our families for their continued partnership and to our students for their great investment of learning and sharing as faithful disciples. We look forward to another great summer in 2019. For now, may God’s blessings continue to be with all of our community.

INSPIRE Vocations: In today’s gospel reading, Jesus makes sure that those who have come to listen to Him are fed. He continues to feed his disciples through the ministry of priests, deacons and religious. At Mass, in the classroom, through social outreach and in so many other ways, these ministers of the Church bring the Bread of Life to people who hunger and thirst for the Lord. Is God calling you to serve through one of these vocations? If you think so, please call or write Father Norm Carroll, Diocesan Director of Priestly and Religious Vocations (302-573-3113, [email protected]). Be sure to visit our website: www.cdow.org/vocations! General Intercessions: That God call many to nourish the people of our Diocese through religious life, the diaconate and the priesthood, we pray to the Lord!
