PENITENTIAL ACT

I confess to almighty God and to you, my brothers and sisters, that I have greatly sinned, in my thoughts and in my words, in what I have done and in what I have failed to do,

(and striking their breast, they say)

through my fault, through my fault, through my most grievous fault; therefore I ask blessed Mary ever-Virgin, all the Angels and Saints, and you, my brothers and sisters, to pray for me to the Lord our God.

THE LITURGY OF THE WORD

FIRST READING Genesis 12:1-4a RESPONSORIAL PSALM Psalm 33 Cantor first, then All: Michel Guimont

SECOND READING 2 Timothy 1:8b-10 GOSPEL ACCLAMATION Frank Schoen

GOSPEL Matthew 17:1-9 HOMILY CREED I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light,

true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven,

(all bow through “and became man”)

and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate

he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

As I have mentioned in previous bulletins, the parish is facing some maintenance issues which include the need to replace our boiler and repair the exterior of the Cathedral. You will notice that there is significant streaking on the north side of the towers and trim paint is peeling all around the outside of the building. What you don’t see is a couple of feet of pigeon poop and dead birds on the floor of the tower

below the bells. The Parish Pastoral Council & Finance Council have recommended moving ahead with Part III of our Cathedral Campaign for a Second Century in order to raise funds to address these needs. I know that we have parishioners who want to continue their pledges from Part II of the campaign in order to address these maintenance needs. However, I am also aware of some “donor fatigue” as well. It is not clear to me how to proceed and so I would like to hear directly from you. Later this week we will be sending out an electronic survey which will ask for your input on a potential campaign. Moreover, I am coming up on my 10th anniversary as Rector and so I would like to take this opportunity to survey parishioners about a number of other issues that we have tried to address over the past decade. These include things like security, ministry to the poor, parking, the novena, etc. My hope is to get as much feedback as possible so as to develop a solid plan going forward. I am very aware of the need to have your support if our parish is to continue to grow and thrive. When you receive a link to the survey, please fill it out. Asking for the prayers of Our Lady of Lourdes, I remain, Sincerely yours in Christ.

St. Bernadette Guild Lead Volunteer Opportunity for Corporal Works of Mercy

Our parish requires a lead for St. Bernadette's Guild which prepares and serves receptions following a Funeral Mass. This is a very spiritual, rewarding position which falls under the Church's teachings on the Corporal Works of Mercy - in giving of support, service and hospitality to the bereaved family and friends who are

experiencing the loss of a loved one. You will have the support of an experienced team to assist with shopping, preparation and serving. This position requires someone who is sensitive to the needs of a grieving family. This could be a ministry shared between two people. Please contact Darlene at the Parish office at 358 - 4290 or email [email protected] for more information.

Stations, Soup & Lenten

The Cathedral maintains our commitment to providing food for the hungry through our expanded sandwich ministry. Two different groups of parishioners gather every other week to assemble 3,000 sandwiches each month for distribution at the House of Charity and Community Court. We make sure to buy good quality cheese, bread, and meat so as to give our best to those in need. This ministry would not be possible without your generosity to the Sunday Second Collection as well as the generosity of our volunteers who give back their time and talent to make this happen. Thanks to all for your good stewardship of time, talent, and treasure!

Scriptural Reflection March 8, 2020 - Second Sunday of Lent

GN 12:1-4A; PS 33:4-5, 18-20, 22; 2 TIM 1:8B-10; MT 17:1-9

Our readings for this second Sunday of Lent offer us Christian stewards motivation to continue on our 40-day journey towards deeper holiness. The first reading from the book of Genesis describes God’s call to Abram (who would later be called Abraham). God instructs Abram to leave his home and set out to a land that God had chosen for him. Abram’s response is an ancient example of a good stewardship. Instead of clinging to his comfortable home and way of life, he recognizes that all he has is gift from God, puts his trust in God and obeys. And God rewards him saying, “I will make your name great, so that you will be a blessing.” To “be a blessing” is the true aim of a stewardship way of life. It is also an excellent way to live out the season of Lent. The sacrifices we take on, the spiritual disciplines we practice, the extra acts of service we perform during this season — all give glory to God and transform our lives into a blessing for others. Lest we grow weary on this path, our Gospel passage today, from Matthew, offers us a powerful image of the great God we serve. It is the story of the Transfiguration of Jesus, when our Lord reveals Himself in His true glory and the Father says, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him.” The apostles who witnessed this were awestruck. But our loving Savior reassured them saying, “Rise, and do not be afraid.” As we continue on our Lenten journey, let us take these two verses, “Listen to him,” “Rise, and do not be afraid” to heart. Let us rely on God’s strength to aid us in our spiritual disciplines as we move through Lent. We will arrive at Easter with deeper holiness, as a blessing to God and others — and as better stewards of all God’s gifts to us.
