"So they left their father Zebedee in theboat along with the hired men and followedhim." What did Zebedee think about all of this?His sons and his partners, James and John,suddenly left their post and followed Jesus. Sothere he stood in the boat with a crew ofemployees, but not one of his sons. We can'thelp but wonder whether Zebedee was in favorof this promise that his heirs would become"fishers of men." Most likely, this event was thecause of some familial tension.

Throughout the Gospels, Jesus instructsus to love and serve others for the love of God.But the Lord also makes it clear that ourdevotion to him is meant to trump our devotionto anything-or anyone-else. For our part, we arecalled to allow this divine allegiance to exist inthose we love, even when it means a sacrificefor us as well. Parents for example, like Zebedee,are called to encourage their children to followthe Lord's call. A son or daughter's vocation toreligious life certainly exemplifies this kind ofsacrifice for a parent who might have had adifferent plan in mind. But in truth every sonand daughter has a vocation from God andparents have the opportunity to support andassist their children as they seek to hear andfollow God's special plan for their lives.

We don't know for sure how Zebedeeresponded to the vocation of his sons, but weknow that James and John were counted amongthe Twelve Apostles and that their devotion anddedication helped to spread the Gospel to theends of the earth. Regardless of what he mighthave thought as he stood in that boat, we can be

quite sure that looking back now, Zebedee can

rejoice heartily in the choice of his sons to leave

their nets and follow Christ.

Excerpts from the Lectionary for Mass 02001, 1998, 1970 CCD

42 Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario

En este domingo damos comienzo a las

lecturas del Evangelio de Marcos. Recordemos

que celebramos el Ciclo B, y recorreremos el

itinerario de Jesús de acuerdo a Marcos de la

siguiente manera. El Evangelio se compone de

un prólogo (Mc 1, 1-13). Éste describe la

preparación del ministerio de Jesús. En los

siguientes capítulos escucharemos sobre la

predicación del Bautista, bautismo de Jesús y

las tentaciones en el desierto, además de la

revelación de Jesús como Mesías por medio de

sus palabras y milagros. Después se narra el

camino de Jesús a Jerusalén, la Pasión, muerte

y Resurrección. Recordemos que el Evangelio

de Marcos solo tiene 16 capítulos.

La misión de Jesús fue proclamar la

Buena Nueva de Dios: "Se ha cumplido el

tiempo y el Reino de Dios ya está cerca.Arrepiéntanse y crean en el Evangelio" (Mc 1,15). Este mensaje recuerda lo que se les pedía

a los de Nínive y ahora a nosotros, el llamado

al arrepentimiento, a la conversión radical.Llamado a vivir diferente, cambiar la conducta

y las malas obras. Es un sentido de urgencia, nose debe de perder el tiempo en tanta tontería.

Entrar en cambio radical no es fácil, serequiere de valentía continua -el Reino tieneexigencias. ¿Qué neceito de cambiar, dearrepentirme, en orden de seguir a Jesús másfielmente? El Reino está listo en los pobres, enlos inmigrantes, en los sin voz y, claro, en lafamilia y amigos. Para entrar al Reino hay unacondición y es sencilla: ser persona de pazhaciéndola vida en los demás. Mantra para lasemana: isantificado sea tu Reino, Señor!
