31st Sunday in Ordinary Time Gospel: Mark 12:28 - 34 Quesons to Ponder: 1. Have you ever wished you could ask Jesus a queson? What would it be? 2. Jesus condenses the commandments down to 2; does this make it easier to live the commandments for you? How? 3. The scribe seems to “get it”. Do you?

Dear Friends,
Every so o,en on the game show Jeopardy, they have a
category called “potpourri.” It is a category of unused
quesons from other various categories on the show. In
short, it’s a mix of many things. This le1er is “potpourri” as
well—a mix of many things.
First of all, a few dates to make sure you get on your
calendar. The first is a Parish Assembly to unveil the
architect’s renderings for our new worship space (church
building). The date is Sunday, January 27, 2019 at 3:00pm
and will be held in the gym on the St. Paul Campus follow
ing the school open house. Come over and tour the school
and then sck around for the meeng.
Second, November is always a month for giving thanks.
We will have two opportunies later this month to do so.
One is our Thanksgiving Day (Nov. 22) Mass at 9:00am at
the St. Paul Chapel; the other is the SellersburgSpeed
Ministerial Associaon Ecumenical Thanksgiving Prayer
Service. That event is held on Thanksgiving Eve (Nov 21) at
7:00pm at Calvary Chrisan Church, 605 Norman Drive in
Sellersburg. Hopefully you can join us for one, or both of
them.
Finally, I am a big fan of Dave Ramsey and his program
called Financial Peace University. We have a few people
finishing the class right now at our parish. I also listen a lot
to his radio program (although I do it as a podcast). He re
cently had a single mother stop by his office to do her
"debtfree" scream. I don't remember the numbers (as in
how much she paid off and what amount of me it took
her), but what I do remember about the call is this: She
was wearing a Tshirt that said, "Actually...I can" and her
two children were wearing Tshirts as well. One said, "Why
I can" and the other said, "Why I will."
When asked about the shirts, she stated that as she was
going through the process, people would o,en tell her she
wouldn't be able to do it. Eventually, she just began an
swering them with the words, "Actually...I can" and then
she would pull out a picture of her oldest child and say,
"This is why I can." Then she would pull out a picture of her
younger child and say, "And this is why I will."
I was struck by that. It reminded me of the importance
of purpose...a reason for doing whatever we do. I would
say this young woman had a pre1y
strong purpose!
In Christ’s Love,
Fr. Tom Clegg
Pastor

Bringing Christmas to
Campton, Kentucky
in Appalachia
For the past 16 years our parish
has made an annual trip to take donated toys to Good Shepherd
Catholic Church in Campton, KY.
Several sisters run the mission
services and distribute Christmas toys to families in this impover
ished Appalachian area. Our Monthly Outreach also pro
vides some financial aid to the parish as they sponsor services to families all year long.
In last year’s le<er, Sr. Susan Marie Pleiss, OFS told of
the increased number of families in need. The store served over 144 families . This was a 50% increase from
the year before. We are happy to be part of this outreach
again this year.
We will be collecng new, unwrapped toys for children ages 013. The unwrapped toys may be brought to
either the St. Paul or St. Joe Hill Chapel beginning
November 5 through November 24. The toys will be delivered to Campton on November 25 so they can be
offered in a “Christmas Shop” to families with children.
As always, bless you for bringing Christmas to Campton again this year!

Hands Across Hai
Annual Fund Drive The St. John Paul II Hai Commiee works year-round to journey with and assist our sister parish, the Bayeux-Novion Parish in Hai. However, we could not do it without your financial support. You should have received (or soon will receive) in the mail important informaon about our Hands Across Hai Annual Fund Drive. Because of the generosi-ty of a donor to do this mailing, 100% of the dollars you donate to this fund provide direct aid to the people of Hai. In past years, we have helped our sister parish add classrooms to their school, pay teachers’ salaries, replace a leaky roof on the church, build a bell tower, provide secondary and University educaon to 64 students, and lunches for the students. We invite all parishioners to consider a gi7 of $25 to this fund. Even if you already sponsor a student, any donaon would be extremely helpful to us as we assist them. Thank you in advance on behalf of the Hai Commiee and our sister parish.
