Dear St. John Parish Family, After nearly 15 wonderful years at St. John Parish, I will be leaving at the end of the month to become Music Director at Our Lady of the Woods Parish in Orland Park. The parish is much closer to home and at this point in my life, I feel morally obliged to consider what is best for my family.

What a blessing it has been for me to serve you all these years! It has truly been an honor and a privilege and I will surely miss my wonderful choir members, CCD teachers, staff, and all of the parishioners. Thank you for your talent, dedication, and kindness all these years. Fr. Jacek has a great love for music and I will do my best to help the new Music and CCD Director to transi-tion into their positions. My last weekend at St. John will be on July 27th and 28th and there will be a reception in the Social Hall after all the Masses. Please keep me in your prayers as I will keep you in my prayers. MEDITACIÓN EVANGÉLICO - ALENTAR ENTENDIMIENTO MÁS PROFUNDO DE LA ESCRITURA 21 de Julio de 2019 16º domingo del Tiempo Ordinario La hospitalidad de la que tanto se habla en estos tiempos en la Iglesia de los Estados Unidos se mani-fiesta en la Liturgia de hoy. Decimos que las co-munidades deben de trabajar en una hospitalidad radical para que los miembros de la comunidad se sientan bienvenidos y atraídos a las asambleas do-minicales. Podemos reflexionar en dos caras de la hospitalidad: La primera de vista a Dios y la segun-da de los que nos rodean y visitan. La hospitalidad debe ser parte esencial de cada cristiano, algo así como un estilo de vida cotidiano. En la Primera Lectura, Abraham se muestra hospitalario y atiende a sus tres visitantes con rapidez y alegría. No es-catima en esfuerzo y trabajo. Es como una urgencia para quedar bien ante los visitantes. ¿Somos así de hospitalarios con los que nos visitan? En el Evangelio donde Jesús visita a Martha y Ma-ría, la hospitalidad parece dividida en dos partes. Una que atiende y se pierde en mil cosas por quedar bien ante el Señor Jesús al grado de reclamar por ayuda. "Señor, ¿no te importa que mi hermana me haya dejado sola para atender?". (Lucas 10:40). Y la otra que se sienta para escuchar y saborear la amistad y la intimidad del Señor. ¿Qué te parece? ¿A cuál de estas dos perteneces tú? Tradicionalmen-te se a interpretado que ambas son buenas, pero necesitan balance. Marta que se afana en la activid-ad y María en contemplar. La enseñanza de Jesús, sencillamente, es que lo primero es Escuchar la Palabra. Por eso Jesús dice: "María ha elegido la mejor parte, que no le será quitada". (Lucas 10:42). ¿Cómo es mi encuentro con Cristo Jesús mi amigo?

GOSPEL MEDITATION - ENCOURAGE DEEPER UNDERSTANDING OF SCRIPTURE July 21, 2019 16th Sunday in Ordinary Time Active and contemplative. At work and at rest. These are dynamics we all face in our lives, and if we're honest, we might not always balance perfectly! In this Sunday's Gospel, our daily tensions play out in two sisters. Mary "sat beside the Lord at his feet lis-tening to him speak." Martha, on the other hand, is "burdened with much serving." This, as it turns out, is not necessarily "the better part." All of us reading this have some sort of labor we en-gage in. We have different trades or careers. We have responsibilities as family members, some of which may take up most of our time. In the time of Scrip-ture, showing hospitality to guests was one of the most important values in society. Our work is im-portant. Jesus himself spent decades as a carpenter. So what's the problem with Martha? Martha is bur-dened, anxious, and worried. Not only that, but she resents her sister's choice. "Tell her to help me," she demands of Jesus. How easy it is to get very busy doing good things. We need to provide for our families and plan for re-tirement. We need to make sure children are clothed, fed, and educated. Our committees, ministries, and sports schedules need to stay on track. However, without a balance of work with rest, without contem-plation in the midst of our action, we will miss the point. While many parts are required for our life in the world to function, the better part is our relation-ship with God. This week, make time in your busy schedule to sit at Jesus' feet. Maybe this is 20 minutes with Scripture, participating in a daily Mass, or a quiet walk alone in the park. Receive what Christ wants to speak to you.

Parish Fun & Games Night

Come join us for our Parish Fun & Games Night

on Tuesday, July 23rd from 6:30 to 8:00 pm.

A variety of games will be held inside the Social Hall and outside on the parish grounds (weather per-mitting). We’ll have bean bag/boards, badminton, ping pong, board games, card games, etc. Feel free to bring your favorite games to share and snacks. This will be a fun event for everyone in the parish; please invite your family and friends to join us as well.

Parish Fun & Game Nights will be every Tuesday, through August 13th.

OUTREACH MINISTRY SCHOOL SUPPLIES DRIVE

We have an opportunity to collect school supplies again this year for

students in need both in Haiti and locally. Following are the items we will be collecting: Backpacks (lightweight and collapsible), #2 pen-cils, small pencil sharpeners, 24 pk. crayons, pen-cil erasers, pocket folders, spiral notebooks, pens (blue, black and/or red), rulers, colored pencils, colored markers, white lined notebook paper, Post-it Notes, index cards, glue sticks, small scis-sors, Dry Erase Markers, small white boards, geo-metric instruments and small calculators. Your donations may be placed in the box labeled “SCHOOL SUPPLIES” located in the vestibule. Items our parish generously donates will be collected from mid-July through the end of August. Thank you for your continued generosity as we help those in need.

Mary Queen of Knights

The Knights will once again be accepting orders for paver bricks that will be installed by the flagpole in the

parking lot. This offering is a special way to honor and preserve a lasting tribute for loved ones and f amilies which are an important part of our Church history. The bricks are 4”x 8” and are engraved using state of the art laser technology. The bricks are 65 dollars each. Order forms are available in the vestibule outside the

blue room.

News from Haiti

Let us celebrate with Fr. Etienne and the children of St. Cecile parish in Haiti who received their sacrament of First Holy Communion. What a beautiful group of smiling faces. Continue to keep them all in your prayers.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

There’s a different pace to a summer Sunday, especially on those days when we dream of air conditioning and wave any available paper to stir the air. Yet we persist in gathering, even with so many breaks from the usual routines. We distance ourselves not only from routines, but from schedules and familiar well-worn paths. These are playful days and contemplative days. We see long-lost friends and visit almost-forgotten places. We have more leisure than any people before in the history of the world, and we need it because our lives are so care-worn and tiring. More of us walk barefoot and look up at the stars or dip our toes in the lake or sea, sing around campfires, read novels on the beach, and eat com-fort food with our fingers. We see how beautiful life can be, and are more aware than usual of how God is always break-ing in with signs of love. In Genesis today, Abraham and Sarah practice hospitality to their visitors, who turn out to be God dropping in. Dur-ing the summer months, God practices hospitality in return, inviting us into a season of celebration. Keeping Sunday holy is a good habit to cultivate in these days when our spirits are especially receptive to God’s deep desire for us to know divine love.

WHY DO WE DO THAT? - CATHOLIC LIFE EXPLAINED

Question: July 22 is the feast of Mary Magdalene. I've heard a lot of stories about her, but who was she really?

Answer: Mary Magdalene has been the subject of speculation and scholarship over the last 2,000 years. Mary Magda-lene makes her first named appearance in Luke 8:2. She is one of several women following Jesus. Luke specif-ically mentions that Mary had previously been delivered from demonic possession. Whatever her life looked like before she met Jesus, it wasn't good! Because of this association with being a repentant sinner, Mary Magdalene has been associated with other similar stories in the Gospel, such as the woman caught in adultery or the woman who bathes Jesus' feet with her tears.

Mary Magdalene shows up again by name at the end of the Gospels, when she stands with the Blessed Virgin Mary at the foot of the Cross. Mary is also present in the garden of the resurrection. She is one of the woman who goes to bring spices to Jesus' tomb, where they find the stone rolled away. Mary stays in the garden weep-ing, believing his body has been stolen. Jesus approaches her and calls her by name, and she becomes the first witness to the resurrection! While many of the details of Mary Magdalene's life have been lost to time, she is an example of powerful conversion, deep faith, and intimate love for Christ.
