Welcome: It is with pleasure that I welcome the following new students to Room Puriri and families to our St John Bosco School Community: Emilia Lynskey-Maclean and her parents Melanie and Quintin and Bella Rush who joins her big brother Cruise at school. Primary Teachers Strike Action: Parents will by now probably be aware of the pending Primary Teacher Strike. This week Primary School Teachers across New Zealand were asked to vote, on their views, in relation to taking action against the Governments decision not to work with NZEI to make working conditions for teachers fairer. We have been told that teachers, New Zealand wide have voted strongly supporting the decision to strike for a full day as opposed to the first recommended 3 hour strike. The date for strike action has been set for Wednesday 15th August. This means that teachers have chosen strike and take leave from work without pay. Hopefully it puts into context how strongly we feel about the change required to ensure we can deliver the best educational environments for children in New Zealand. Teachers and Principals appreciate the inconvenience of strike action on families. Members do not take the decision to strike lightly. Primary teachers have not taken industrial action in New Zealand since 1994 and the fact that we are taking such a step now shows the grave concerns we have for the future of quality education. The government needs to take courageous steps now to support our schools, increase funding, provide more staffing and make the job an attractive option for the next generation of budding young teachers. Our school staff would like you to know the following points in relation to their strike: Firstly this strike isn’t about us and our needs. It is about your children and their needs now and into the future. You send your children to school to help prepare them for the rest of their life. Yet, schools are facing a teacher shortage crisis, with a 40% drop in people training to be teachers; and a growing number of school-aged children is making appointments of quality teachers difficult. Schools are struggling to find enough staff to teach our children. There is also a desperate need for far more support for children with additional learning needs. We are incredibly underfunded and unsupported by the government in gaining support for student's with learning needs. The number of children requiring extra support is multiplying but the support networks are decreasing or are swamped with requests for support. Since the early 2000s teacher salaries have dropped significantly relative to the median NZ salary from 1.8 times the median (for experienced teachers on the top of the pay scale) to just over 1.5. In effect, this means jobs that used to earn less than teachers now earn more. We need to attract quality people to the profession. A fair salary is a great place to start in balancing this out. It is a well known fact in Education that 30% of our sector will leave the job within the first 5 years of their career. 30% of our sector are wanting to move into part time work only such as release work and 30% are preparing for retirement. Many of our historical teacher trainees are not electing to train as teachers as the pay rate in comparison with alternate jobs in more attractive in the current living environment. WHAT ARE WE ARE CAMPAIGNING FOR? * More staffing – so your kids can get more attention * More resources / time / support and staff to cater for children with additional learning needs * A pay jolt to salaries for teachers to address the teacher shortage – so that we can attract quality candidates to the profession meaning your children will have the best possible teacher in the future. We are hoping that the Minister of Education will work with us to meet the needs of our children before August 15th. But in the meantime I would ask that you prepare for and make arrangements for your child to be cared for on August 15th. Taranaki Athletics: We currently have Olley Jowsey working within our school focusing on good running technique in preparation for our cross country. We value working

with sporting agencies preparing our children.

Parking on Clinton Street: I have had members of Clinton Street inform me that they are upset the St John Bosco families are parking in and across their Driveways in the morning and after school either dropping or collecting children at school. They have asked that our families do not do this and respect that their driveways are a part of their property. We continue to encourage our families to Park further down Clinton Street and walk into school. I again thank the many families who do this regardless of

the weather and I encourage others to do so. The Calder-sack is not to be used as a drop off point. We do not want any parents parking on any yellow lines on Clinton Street or in the Parish Carpark.

Cross Country: Term 3 is our Annual School Cross Country Term. We will begin our in school training for this event soon and work towards increasing our children's aerobic fitness levels over the next 5 - 6 weeks. We have set the date Tuesday 28 August as our school cross country. This will be followed the following Tuesday 4 September with the New Plymouth Schools

Cross Country. Children from the age of 8 and older will be selected from our school cross country to represent our school for this event.

We work hard to prepare all students for our school cross country. We pride ourselves that every child will take part, just giving the course the best effort they can and feeling the pride of saying I finished the cross country.

Keep our school cross country date free. We are hoping that we can again hold this down at Peringa Park.
