This fall we are making a major change to our religious education program, but don’t worry, it will still be

called REACH! St Jerome is having the same problem that plagues most parishes. The current Sunday

morning classroom model of passing on the Faith no longer works. Why, you ask? The reason is simple,

many kids don’t come on a regular basis, and parents are so busy and stressed that many just don’t

have the energy to take their children to Mass. When children come to class sporadically, and attend

Mass occasionally, it is impossible for any once a week program to pass on the Faith. So the new pro-

gram is going to make your life much simpler.

Like many parishes in our Diocese and with support from our Bishop, we are moving to a family model

that will meet once a month on a Sunday morning. Parents will be required to attend along with their

child, Fr. Rojin and I will be at each session helping parents to deepen their own faith so that they can do

the home activities to help their children not only learn the content of the faith but draw closer to the Lord.

The Sunday program will include music, prayer and Scripture study. My hope with the new program is

that all will come to Mass every week, even when their family group is not meeting.

In September, we will have two Sunday explanation sessions for parents. These will be critical because

they will explain the program and use of materials. In mid October, the new program will begin. Once a

month, Sunday sessions will begin with a required 9:15am family Mass. Parents and children will then

we will meet downstairs for refreshments and an opening segment. The children will go in grade level

groups with teachers for their lesson, while parents stay and work with Fr David or Fr. Rojin. During the

parent session, parents will get the background for the unit and connection to online resources with

which to teach their kids at home for the next three weeks. Everyone comes back together to be dis-

missed.

Watch for more details and dates. Registration info and forms have been emailed. Please call the

REACH office at 203.846.2111 if you are new to the parish.
