Welcome to St George’s spring season and to a brochure that brings back under one roof the full gamut of concerts, from classical, jazz and folk to world, opera and new music – and not forgetting our very popular spoken word events. The message is simple: St George’s is here so that you can explore and enjoy high quality music across numerous different styles and traditions, and the hall is as much poised to thrill to the immortal chords of a classical piano masterpiece or traditional folk song as it is to the mellifluous flights of imagination that dance under the fingers of a legendary jazz saxophonist. With an unparalleled natural acoustic, intimate setting and warm atmosphere at their disposal, the creativity of musicians on stage knows no bounds, and every concert becomes a unique and enthralling experience for musicians and audiences alike.

The opening notes of our 2013 season are played by a pianist of impeccable credentials, Dame Mitsuko Uchida, ushering in a gripping succession of concerts in which some of the greatest musicians of our age mingle with the cream of young talent, both national and local, and instrumental groups at the cutting edge

of acoustic music. Our musical reach extends back to the 16th and 17th centuries, reaching a climax with the launch in March of a new Bristol Baroque Festival that celebrates the riches of this period in great style; it crosses continents with visits from groups such as Anda Union from Inner Mongolia and the Dhoad Gypsies from Rajasthan; and it even boldly goes into space with a Journeys of Exploration talk. Our specially curated Filmic series boasts a rare solo performance by one of the best known contemporary composers, Philip Glass, while String Theory brings together country legends and local heroes with classical string quartets and all-plucking guitar and ukulele orchestras.

With the whole season spread out before you, settle back and allow yourself to be inspired and enticed back to this exceptional venue time and time again.

We are proud to be launching, in association with BBC Radio 3, the first ever Bristol Baroque Festival of Music.It unwraps an abundance of great music and artistry that flourished during the Baroque era, bringing it into the light of the modern day in a way that underscores its zest and glorious originality. The musical genius of JS Bach is a particular focus this year, with two of his greatest devotional works book ending the festival, but there are plenty of other programmes to grab attention, from a dramatic Handel and the Rival Queens offering from the Early Opera Company to an exploration of Spain’s Golden age with The Harp Consort – and even a children’s concert that journeys from Rome to the rain forests of South america in the company of a magic pearl necklace!

BBC Radio 3 has been at our side from the very start of our ventures into this era of music-making, and it’s a particular pleasure that they will be broadcasting Radio 3 Live in Concert from St George’s from Monday 25 to Friday 29 March as well as creating a number of interviews and spoken word events to illuminate the Baroque, as part of a wider BBC Radio 3 Baroque season. Radio 3 presenter Tom Service will be introducing all the live broadcast concerts and helping to send the St George’s sound out around the country – so all that remains is for you to take your seat and ensure you’re on board for this celebratory festival.

String Theory 2The second part of our celebration of string-driven music from around the world opens with a January triple-whammy of local heroes Spiro / Three Cane Whale, Canada’s The Be Good Tanyas and Portland, Oregon’s Kelly Joe Phelps and ends in June with the glorious return of all-plucking ensemble The Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain. In between comes the Adrian Utley Guitar Orchestra (performing Terry Riley’s In C), the horse-hair lutes and fiddles of Mongolia’s Anda Union and early summer shows (bookable in March) from folk’s leading string-theorist Chris Wood, and cabaret-style shows by country legends The Kennedys with the Carrivick Sisters and the jazzy double-bill of Oriole and Basquiat Strings.

Filmic is Bristol’s very own festival dedicated to the various intersections of music and film, jointly curated by Phil Johnson and Watershed’s Mark Cosgrove.
