St. Genevieve Celebrates 60 Years “Our Family: Rooted in Faith, Strengthened by Hope, Lived through Charity” Today, the Christmas story continues. Today, the story heads East as the newly-born infant Savior of the world sends the Star of Bethlehem to the Wise Men, popularly known as the Magi or the “Three Kings” to draw them into his presence. In this story, God manifests his presence quietly to a limited few – first the Shepherds and then the wise men. It affected not only all of Israel, but the entire world. That is what is celebrated in to-day’s solemnity; God’s manifestation in the world is intended for the world as a whole, including specifically the gentile nations who, unlike the Jews, had received no prophetic announcements, and who were the first to arrive to pay homage. This is the message of the Epiphany, that through the “yes” of a few great men, who willingly allowed themselves to be pulled into the simple place where the Savior was – the story of salvation was made known throughout the whole world. Today’s feast is an appropriate time for us here at St. Genevieve Catholic Church to begin our celebration of the 60th year of our foundation as the first parish on the west side of Thibodaux. Since our humble beginnings in 1959, when again, a few great men gath-ered to turn a simple building into a solemn place of worship. We have grown so much to become the community that we are. Yet, we are more than a community. We have become a family, the St. Genevieve Family. This is what St. Genevieve is to us today. We are one, big, thriving family from different homes and towns, all drawn together to the star the shines in this western part of Thibodaux. This is why as a family, it is right that we celebrate 60 years of blessings and provi-dence from God, not just on one day or a few days but a whole year. We have 365 rea-sons to be joyful and to be hopeful. First, we thank God that he made that “Star of Bethlehem” shine over this part of town in 1959, drawing near to this place Fr. John Lyle Newfield and a few other men. That star continues to shine on us today, always bringing us together to this house of worship on Barbier and Parish Roads. We look forward to our celebration this year and to the different ways that we can celebrate our community. May this year truly be a year in which we as a family can deep-en our faith, strengthen our hope and live all these in charity. Fr. Eric, Pastor
