Lenten CrossesOn Ash Wednesday we wear ashes on our foreheadsas a symbol of our faith. This year we request all todisplay a sign of faith throughout Lent by placing thecross distributed this weekend, facing outward, in aprominent window in our homes. It will serve as a re-minder to us and all who see it of the Lenten seasonof prayer, fasting and alms giving.
All are welcome to join us for a showing of a 30minute Bishop Fulton Sheen program, "Hope for aWounded World" in Konsowski Hall on Saturday,February 21 , following the 4:00pm Mass. A freewill offering is requested for a light meal to beserved prior to the program.
Now Is the TimeWho needs ashes? Why fast and prepare on this day?The joys of last year's Palm Sunday of the Lord's Pas-sion and Easter are now reduced to dust. These ashespoint out our fragility as we await salvation in ChristJesus. We must start again "to come down where [we]ought to be" ("'Tis the Gift to Be Simple") and preparethe way of the Lord in our lives. Now is the favorabletime and the day of our salvation. The Lord, our DivineBridegroom, lifts us up from our weakness. We hopeto enter into grace and to share in his divine life. Areyou ready and willing?

Year of Sacraments • One Word at a Time
“The priest absolvesyour sins,”the catechisttells her class of sevenyearolds. They acceptit but, of course, don’tunderstand it. Maybesome of us older folksdon’t quite get it either. The meaning behindthis uncommon word is actually pretty simple. To absolve is to free up. We could use otherwords as well, such as to forgive, to unknot,to undo, or to release.
The great grace and result of the Sacramentof Penance is that sin no longer has a holdon us. What has trapped us and tied us upis dissipated. We find ourselves freed up. Andthe freedom we experience is genuine freedom, not just the freedom to do whatever wewant but the real freedom to be who we trulyare—God’s beloved sons and daughters.
