Dear Parents, The news about our Year 5 & 6 classroom structure for 2016 has generated an enormous response from the parent and student community. Messages of support for this decision and excitement about future education opportunities have been pleasing. This decision has not been made lightly and it is seen as a continuation of the already excellent education St. Finbar’s currently (and in the past) provides for all students. After discussions with the year 5 & 6 students there were many questions generated about the change to two Year 5 classes and two Year 6 classes. Some of the questions ranged from topics such as: What camps will we have and what structure will they be? i.e.: separate Year 5 and 6 camps? Who will be the new teacher employed? Who will be teaching in Year 5 & 6? Where will the new classroom be? Can the Year 5 & 6 students still do things together? What Leadership opportunities will there be for Year 6? Can we have ‘all boy’ and ‘all girl’ classes? What is going to happen to the computer lab? Can we have a swimming pool? There have been many excellent questions posed by the students some of which are easy to sort through and others which will require careful planning and consideration. As with all major decisions, my preference is to consult our major stakeholders: Parents, Students and Staff. Through a consultative approach I can make an informed decision on what is in the best interests of our students and the community. Special thanks to Fr. Malcolm for his support and insights regarding this decision. Concert practice is coming along nicely. Mrs. Tammesild has been working tirelessly with the students who are in special roles and Mrs. Young is in full concert mode with staff and students. Special thank you to all of the parents who are assisting with costumes and in particular Mrs. Andie Dashwood who has been working on the choreography with the students. Next term we will be having a complete overhaul of our school website. There will be a number of new additions as well as a mobile/app version specially created for tablets and mobile phones. There is an approval process to join this community so only St. Finbar’s Parents will have access to it. Well done to Miss Hill our ICT leader for starting this initiative. Good luck to all of our students representing the school tomorrow at the Dendy inter school athletics carnival. I hope you enjoy the opportunity to represent our school. In a world that is obsessed with health and fitness and yet, ironically, also experiencing an ever-increasing overweight and obese population, what we eat has come under greater scrutiny than ever before. ‘You are what you eat’ has become a catchcry for healthy eating but Catholics have known the truth of this statement for centuries. This week’s gospel, (John 6:51-58), is an essential passage of scripture that supports the teaching of Christ present in the Eucharist. Since the first century, Christians linked their celebration of Eucharist with the words of Jesus at the last supper – they celebrated Eucharist as a memorial of Jesus. Today, when we participate in the Eucharist, we not only receive the body of Christ; we become the body of Christ. The people who make up the Church in the world are indeed the body of Christ. In the words of St Teresa, ‘Christ has no body now but yours!’

Our Social Justice leaders for this term have already begun their Mayflower project with a visit last Wednesday where they met the resident they will be working with for the rest of the term. Legacy badges/wrist bands etc will again be available before school and at lunch time over the next week …

“Celebrated every year on August 15, the Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary commemorates the death of Mary and her bodily assumption into Heaven, before her body could begin to decay--a foretaste of our own bodily resurrection at the end of time. Because it signifies the Blessed Virgin's passing into eternal life, it is the most important of all Marian feasts and a Holy Day of Obligation.” Scott P Richert http://catholicism.about.com/od/holydaysandholidays/p/Assumption.htm

ICT News – Miss Michelle Hill eSmart Digital Licenses Students today are using technology from a very young age and it is important that we teach our children to be smart, safe and responsible digital citizens. Thanks to a $1.2 million grant from Google, and in partnership with The Alannah and Madeline Foundation every student in Year 6 is being offered the opportunity to gain their own eSmart Digital License. This will equip children with the knowledge and skills they require to learn, play and socialise safely online. Our Year 6 students will start working towards gaining their license next week. It consists of eight modules, each of which will take about 15 minutes to complete and students can work on it at school and home. You can read more about the eSmart Digital License at http://www.amf.org.au/digitallicence/ SPORT NEWS ~ Mrs. Tania Thompson – Sports Coordinator

Sustainability and Community Engagement

Sustainability This term the service is focusing on Sustainability and community engagement. We are promoting the connection between children and nature by inviting Carolyn Priest, the Garden Rejuvenator, to provide hands on experiences for children during OSHC. The sessions with Carolyn have been interesting to watch. We have listened to children discuss, respond, and make connections between experiences, concepts and processes (FW 4.3) related to aspects of "Horticulture", the job of the arborist, a landscaper, a landscape architect, and the difference between them. Carolyn has provided healthy leaves against leaves that were nutrient deficient, leaves with a disease and leaves that had pest damage. She showed children a Ph soil test kit and discussed soils in the church garden beds. She demonstrated how to measure distances and the various uses of a laser (to calculate decking, number of plants required, amount of mulch required). She provided images of beneficial organisms in the garden like spiders and worms and advised children never kill or harm these. By far the children were most impressed with Carolyn's Health and Safety gear, especially when Carolyn asked several children to "stomp" on her toes! They were all surprised to hear that her boots were steel capped! This lead to an important discussion about health and safety gear and safety in general.

Bookings/Cancellations/Adjustments Please call 9592 0994 directly. (The mobile is not to be used as the service is trying to "funnel" all adjustments to the daily attendance through to the OSHC phone)

Community Engagement For children, a sense of community plays an important role in the development of their feelings of belonging and security. Children thrive in an environment of mutually supportive and caring relationships. For this reason developing a sense of community within a service is crucial. It is also valuable for children to feel part of a wider community that extends beyond the learning environment. As children grow and develop, connections to the outside world help them to find their place in the world, to develop understandings of how society works, and to recognise and understand the shared values that underpin our society. For all of these reasons the My Time Our Place (MTOP)Frameworks and the National Quality Standard (NQS) both emphasise the importance of community engagement: Learning Outcome 2 of the MTOP focuses on children’s connectedness with others and with the wider world (DEEWR, 2009, p. 25) Standard 6.3 of the NQS requires services to develop ‘links with relevant community and support agencies’ (NQS Element 6.3.1) and, more generally, to ‘build relationships and engage with the local community’ (NQS Element 6.3.2) (ACECQA, 2011, p. 159). Finding ways to effectively engage with the community, and the time in which to do it can be challenging however what matters most is that our approach is genuine. If we want children to learn about the value of community and connections with others, then we need to consider the example we set and the opportunities that we provide for such learning to occur. Leading on from this we hope to attract children into organising a "working bee" which will be guided by Carolyn and alongside an Educator, to help with the Parish gardens. Please speak with your children and should they show interest in being involved then please complete the permission form and return it to the service.

Accounts

The accounts are now out and are due and payable within seven days. The accounts not only list family usage but also the discounted fee and information that informs families as to how to obtain the 50% rebate (CCR). We have been very lenient in regards to late payments but to be fair and equitable to all our families we are guided by our policy and procedures which means we have contracted for an outside collection agency and will pursue legal action in the collection of any past due debt at the expense of the debtor.

If you are experiencing financial difficulties then please speak to Melissa, otherwise it is expected that accounts are paid fortnightly. Accounts are emailed directly to a dedicated family email. If an email is not available then accounts are distributed via the office and are handed to children by their class room teacher. If you do not receive your account please contact Melissa. Cash is NOT to be left at the office but handed directly to staff where a receipt will be issued. Other methods of payment is via cheque or the most preferred way is via a direct transfer to the St Finbar’s OSHC bank account (St Finbars Outside School Hours Care BSB: 083 347A/c: 55055 9263. Please include your surname and child’s name in the Ref area). So as to avoid large accounts, it’s important that payments are made every 2 weeks and also frequent payments keep our OSHC program running efficiently. Thank you in advance

16 August 2015 “Do not drug yourselves with wine….” What prophetic words are these, as we read and hear St Paul’s letter to the Ephesians in the twenty first century. Paul is asking for honesty and authenticity from his readers, at a time when many in Ephesus were not shaping up to reality, and were using substitutes to cope and enjoy life. What a two-fold effect alcohol and drugs have on so many of our young people as they search and struggle for a proper place in society. Most of us older ones have had less temptation than the emerging generation – so let us be thankful for the support we had; and give us an openness Lord, that shows others we have followed a true path. Paul prayerfully expresses that hope and with God’s help we can do likewise. Fr Malcolm Crawford

CATHOLIC CARE’S 80TH ANNIVERSARY

GALA BALL

Thursday 10 September, 6.30pm,

Plaza Ballroom, 191 Collins Street, Melbourne.

To commemorate 80 years of caring for the

less fortunate among us, CatholicCare has planned a very special night of celebration

and they would love you to be a part of it.

On Thursday 10 September, amid the elegant grandeur of the Plaza Ballroom, an

exciting line-up of entertainment awaits. The

live and silent auctions are guaranteed to thrill, but most importantly, CatholicCare’s

Heavenly Gala Ball aims to raise $100,000 to

support families who are disadvantaged and

marginalised. You can support CatholicCare by purchasing tickets to the Gala Ball,

making a donation or donating an auction

item. Cost: $195 Details: Events Manager Angela Smith on
