S.C.A. Announcements

Council Meeting A Council meeting of the Association will be held on 22 February 1996 in the Wansdyke Room at 7.30pm when all council members should attend. Annual General Meeting The A.G.M. of the Association will be held on 21st March 1996 at7.30pm in the Avon Room. See Page 6. Joan Moore We are sorry to record the death of Joan after a long illness, bravely borne with incredible cheerfulness. The Association remembers her contribution as membership secretary in the 1970's. She also gave much behind the scenes support to husband , Ray, during his 9 years as our Honorary Secretary. One aspect of this was the very necessary coffee and biscuits which kept the Management & Finance Committee going during the often long meetings at their home! Our Drama Club will also recall Joan's membership with gratitude. She was one of a small number of members willing to undertake the arduous & often uncomfortable role as Prompt. Our thoughts & sympathy are with Ray, his son David & Daughter, Kay. Ann Mould S.C.A.N. Janet Drewett of Mead Lane, Saltford dropped me a line with a few personal thoughts on the two-monthly SCAN which are . always appreciated. "Thank goodness," she writes, "it has am and pm again." "Too much to pin on my notice board. The single sheet giving essential dates and basic information is missed. Is the magazine really necessary?" She concludes with a hope that she might receive SCAN each month. In response to this r~uest Janet, I can

3

assure you that Saltford Community Association are keeping the new format and the interval of publication under constant review as well as respecting the views of the readers. By the way, many thanks for your offer to help me with the distribution. We'll be in touch as soon as we need someone. Richard Davies S.C.A.N. Production & Editing The Association is still seeking someone willing to take on the production of S.C.A.N .. Would anyone with typing, word processing or desk top publishing skills who is interested please contact Ron Anderton (0117 986 2467) or John Thomas (0117 986 3869) for further details. Copy for SCAN Until further notice, Sectional and Affiliated Organisations should send copy for inclusion in SCAN to the Assistant Editor, Richard Davies, "Y-DERI" High Street, Saltford, Bristol, BS18 3EJ or contact him on 01225 872699. "Y-DERI" is on the West side of High Street, between Church Square and the Bird in Hand with wrought iron gates at the entrance and 50 yards from the Bird in Hand. Alternatively, if more convenient, you may deliver copy for the time being to 13, Claverton Road, Saltford. The copy deadline for the April/May '96 issue is 18th March 1996. Forthcoming Event BIG BAND Saturday 8th June 1996 On Saturday 8th June the CORY BAND are coming to Saltford Hall. Saltford Singers

Saltford Singers How good it was to see so many of you at our Christmas concert - and later to hear your kind words of appreciation. What a "Grande Finale" for our departing conductor, David Roberts, who has done so much for the Singers over the past fifteen years. Thanks to you all. A pity the new seating did not arrive in time but that can be an extra treat in store for you at our next concert.

So the old year ended and the New Year has started in finer style under our new conductor- David Skinner. David brings a vast and varied experience of music, conducting and presentation. He made television appearances with the A von Orchestra in the 60's and in 1973 formed and served as musical director of the A von Light Opera Club. More recently he has been associated with the W edmore players, served as choirmaster at Fishponds Baptist Church and has adjudicated at numerous eisteddfods. We look to the future enthusiastically as we prepare a concert for your enjoyment in May. We are looking at a theme relating to Spring and Summer in England with some well known, and some not so well known, melodies. Join us on 17 & 18 May. Of course you could join us before May if you would like to sing yourself. We are

Newspaper and Magazine Collection

The last collection in December realised a total of 15.54 tonnes and once again we sincerely thank all those who saved their paper and magazines for our collectors, sorters and loaders. Happy New Year to you all! As a matter of interest we collected 81.65 tonnes in 1995 and since the collection was originally started in 1968 a total of 1821.23 tonnes has been collected. This, as you realise has been a major income towards the cost of running Saltford Hall. However, the number of helpers have dwindled during the last year and we look forward to welcoming more residents - especially in the evening to help sort and tie the paper and magazines. it is only six times a year that we would appreciate your help for an hour or so, and we do provide a FREE cup of tea! The next collection is on Tuesday 6th February and Saltford Hall will be open from 2.30pm.

Saltford Pre-School Saltford Pre- school is a small community Pre-School Playgroup run by parents to provide our children with both free play and planned activities. We strive to combine elements of imagination, creativity, and free expression with structured activities that promote PreSchool learning, concentration and good social behaviour. Parents work together with play leaders and staff, and join in as volunteers, to provide the environment, activities and type of programme we desire for our children. If you want to be involved in a pre-school that listens, is open to new ideas and values parental input and involvement, please come and meet us and join our group. We are open every day between 9.15 and ll.45. We are currently running a recruitment drive. If you would like more information, please contact Chairman, Mrs Catherine McCrory 01225 g73944 or Secretary Mrs Nicola Shearn 01225 874269 (Nicola Shearn)

Saltford Walkers At the beginning of December last year Saltford Walkers held their annual Christmas Dinner/Dance at Carnley Lodge when over 50 members attended. This was a special occasion as it also marked the 20th year since the club originated. During the past year the programme included 33 walks on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays; 3 social eveni~gs, a skittles evening and visits to Oldbury Power Station and a Vineyard. Ia Jaooary this year the Walk«s held their annual AGM and Party at Saltford Hall when some 76 members were present. The party and American Supper followed the conclusion of the business and the evening was thoroughly enjoyed by all. (DJW)
