TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE

En los calendarios antiguos se celebraba la memo-

ria de san Cristóbal el día 10 de este mes. Pero, con la

reforma del Concilio Vaticano II este pobre santo se

quedó sin trabajo sólo por el hecho de no poder com-

probar su existencia.

No fue que la reforma del Concilio Vaticano II

quisiera haber negado al pobre de Cristóbal ni a tantos

otros santos que fueron quitados del Santoral Romano.

Sólo buscaba hacer lugar para nuevos santos y beatos;

y menos mal, porque eventualmente el Papa Juan Pa-

blo II canonizó y beatificó a más de mil personas du-

rante su pontificado. Muchos de estos santos no son

tan bien conocidos como nuestro amigo san Cristóbal.

Aunque ya no está en el calendario eclesiástico,

Cristóbal continúa en los tableros de muchos carros

ofreciendo su servicio de protección para los automo-

vilistas. Esta chambita la consiguió porque ayudaba a

cruzar el río a personas en camino, hasta que un día le

tocó cargar con el niño Dios. Su nombre significa “el

que carga con Cristo” y es un desafío a todos los que

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

Last week’s Treasure mentioned the “Nuns of the Bat-

tlefield,” religious sisters from several communities who

served as nurses in the Civil War. Florence Nightingale

had only instituted female nurses a decade before in the

Crimean War, so the idea of women tending to wounded

soldiers was extraordinary. The medical and sanitary con-

ditions on the battlefields were appalling, and the sisters

were nearly all teachers. Few had any medical training

beyond what they had learned as youngsters in the family.

Anti-Catholic prejudice was so deeply entrenched in

America that sisters could not wear their habits in public.

These sisters were the first, and people on both the Union

and Confederate sides soon began to marvel at their brav-

ery, efficiency, and respect for Protestant soldiers. More

than six hundred sisters from twenty-one communities

went to war, serving in wretched conditions. They were

tough and single-minded, efficient and fearless.

After the war, sisters could appear in public every-

where in the reunited nation, and often received the praise

and gratitude of grateful soldiers and family members on

behalf of their sister nurses. An outdoor monument to the

“Nuns of the Battlefield” stands in Washington at M

Street and Rhode Island Avenue. The inscription reads:

“They comforted the dying, nursed the wounded, carried

hope to the imprisoned, gave in His name a drink of water

I believe that it is appropriate to provide, at the beginning

of this article, a brief overview of the topic which has

been the focus of the previous week's messages ‘From

the Pastor.' Father Paolo has been highlighting the great

importance of the transmission of faith in the Christian

family; furthermore, it is necessary that we recognize that

the widespread secularization and overall immorality we

find in our contemporary society is due to a lack in this

transmission. This is by no means an accusation directed

to the Christian families of today. It is quite easy to rec-

ognize that mass media has done a great job in attacking

the family: unless we are vigilant, the world can counter-

catechize our children and us almost without us realizing

it. Through the movies we watch, the music we listen to,

even the news we read can affect our mindset. Do not

misunderstand me, my intention is not to cause mass-

paranoia, but it is important that we are alert in defending

our Christian identity. It is in this regard that there is a

lesson to be learned from our ‘older brothers in the faith,'

as many Popes have described them, namely, the Jewish

people. This is the reason that Father Paolo has been

highlighting the importance of a right attitude and rela-

tion toward the Jewish people in the previous weeks, also

with the support of the teaching of the Church. Our

Christian identity and faith have its origin and roots in the

Faith of the People of Israel, and as such, we should ab-

sorb the wisdom that God has implanted within the Jew-

ish culture. However, before we delve into the topic at

hand, I would like to establish some basic parameters.

You may be thinking: I already send my kids to CCD,

and they have all their Sacraments, so my job here is

done. Wrong! The Church in her wisdom as a loving

mother teaches that the responsibility of educating chil-

dren falls first and foremost upon the parents. In today's

society, this primary role of the family seems a bit lost. It

is commonplace to delegate this duty to others. Namely,

we leave the secular education of our children to public

or private school systems, but perhaps of more concern,

is that we almost totally hand over the faith education of

our children to others. Now, there should be no confu-

sion: it is necessary to send our children to CCD to be

formed in the dogmatic and sacramental aspects of the

faith. However, our faith is much more than simply mem-

orizing intellectual truths, or receiving the sacraments. A

crucial aspect of the faith formation the Church has en-

trusted to parents is to transmit the lived experience of

Christianity. Perhaps this concept seems too abstract, and

it is necessary to provide an example of how the trans-

mission of faith looks like within the family, and it is

with this in mind that we can return to the people of Isra-

el. The many liturgical celebrations of Judaism have an

inbuilt characteristic of transmitting the faith. It is crucial

for the people of Israel to maintain their identity. And

their identity, much like ours, comes from a lived experi-

ence of a profound encounter with God, who intervened

Creo que es apropiado proporcionar, al comienzo de este

artículo, un breve resumen del tema que ha sido el foco de

los mensajes 'del párroco’ de la semana anterior. El padre

Paolo ha estado destacando la gran importancia de la

transmisión de la fe en la familia cristiana; además, es im-

perativo que reconozcamos que la secularización y la in-

moralidad general que encontramos en nuestra sociedad

contemporánea se deben a una falta de esta transmisión.

Esto no es de ninguna manera una acusación dirigida a las

familias cristianas de hoy; es muy fácil reconocer que los

medios de comunicación han hecho un gran trabajo al ata-

car la familia. A menos que estemos vigilantes, el ' mundo

' puede contra-catequizar a nuestros hijos y a nosotros casi

sin darnos cuenta. A través de las películas que vemos, la

música que escuchamos, incluso las noticias que leemos

pueden afectar nuestra mentalidad. No me malinterpreten,

mi intención no es causar paranoia masiva, pero es impor-

tante que estemos alertas en la defensa de nuestra identi-

dad cristiana. Es en este sentido hay una lección que debe-

mos aprender de nuestros ' hermanos mayores en la fe ',

como muchos Pontífices los han descrito, es decir, el Pue-

blo Judío. Esta es la razón por la que el padre Paolo ha

estado destacando la importancia de una actitud y una re-

lación correcta hacia el pueblo judío en las semanas ante-

riores. Nuestra identidad y fe cristiana tienen su origen y

raíces en la fe del pueblo de Israel, y como tal debemos

absorber la sabiduría que Dios ha implantado dentro de la

cultura judía. Sin embargo, antes de profundizar en el te-

ma en cuestión, me gustaría establecer algunos parámetros

básicos. Usted puede estar pensando: yo ya envió a mis

hijos a CCD, y tienen todos sus Sacramentos, por lo que

mi trabajo aquí está hecho. ¡Equivocado! La iglesia en su

sabiduría como Madre amorosa enseña que la responsabi-

lidad de educar a los niños recae en primer lugar sobre los

padres. En la sociedad actual, este papel primordial de la

familia parece un poco perdido. Es común delegar este

deber a otros. Es decir, dejamos la educación secular de

nuestros hijos a los sistemas escolares públicos o priva-

dos; pero, de mayor preocupación, es que casi totalmente

entregamos la educación en la fe de nuestros hijos a otros.

Ahora bien, no debe haber confusión: es necesario enviar

a nuestros hijos al CCD para que se formen en los aspec-

tos doctrinales y sacramentales de la fe. Sin embargo,

nuestra fe es mucho más que simplemente memorizar las

verdades intelectuales, o recibir los sacramentos. Un as-

pecto crucial de la formación de la fe, la iglesia se lo ha

confiado a los padres, y eso es transmitir la experiencia

vivida del cristianismo. Tal vez este concepto parece de-

masiado abstracto, y es necesario dar un ejemplo de cómo

la transmisión de la fe se da dentro de la familia, y es con

esto en mente que podemos volver al pueblo de Israel. Las

celebraciones litúrgicas del judaísmo tienen una caracte-

rística incorporada de transmitir la fe. Es crucial que el

pueblo de Israel mantenga su identidad. Y su identidad,

Old Testament, we find that in the liturgical instruc-

tions of the Jewish Passover the transmission of faith to

the future generations was fundamental: “When your

children ask you, ‘What does this rite of yours mean?’

you shall reply, ‘This is the Passover sacrifice of the

Lord, who passed over the houses of the Israelites in

Egypt; when he struck down the Egyptians, he spared

our houses.’” (Ex. 12:26-27) So, as we shall further

discuss in next week’s article it is in recounting of a

concrete event that the Jewish people transmit the faith.

Perhaps we all must reflect on what lived experience of

God we possess, in order for us to transmit the faith to

our children.

a los egipcios y salvo nuestras casas.’” (EX. 12,26-27)

Entonces, como hablaremos más a fondo en el artículo de

la semana próxima, es por medio de narrar un aconteci-

miento que los Judíos transmiten la fe. Todos debemos

reflexionar sobre nuestras experiencias de encuentro per-

sonal con Dios, que podemos compartir, para así transmi-

tir nuestra fe a los hijos.
