St. Thomas More Catholic Church September 20, 2020

Dear Friends in Christ,

September 22nd is the beginning of the Fall season. For many people, Fall is their fa-vorite season. The weather cools (in Houston... sort of), the leaves change (in Hou-ston... kind of), football season begins and some great holidays are just around the cor-ner. The cosmic event that marks Fall is the autumnal equinox – the moment when the plane of Earth’s equator passes through the center of the sun’s disk. On September 22nd, there are exactly twelve hours of day and twelve hours of night. The days will continue to get shorter and shorter until we arrive at the winter solstice on December 21st.

Many of us probably wish that we could predict the future of COVID as well as we can predict the seasons, but we can’t. Even though things are looking more and more positive, the fact is that much uncertainty remains. Our modus operandi is to continue to follow the guidelines of the Archdiocese and to keep things as simple as possible. I would to take this opportunity to answer some commonly asked questions.

How many people can we have at Mass? We are still limited to 25% capacity, which is about 250 people. Even if we were allowed to increase capacity, it would be difficult to follow social distancing guidelines. If and when the need arises, we will offer more Masses.

What public events are allowed? Since May, the only public event we have been able to have on campus is the liturgy. Recently, the diocese has allowed only CCE and RCIA meetings to take place in person, at the discretion of the parish. We will contin-ue to move forward with our original plan of a family-based at-home catechesis, and we will continue evaluate this situation. Please see our website for more details. The diocese has not allowed us to have other events without explicit permission. Will the adoration chapel open back up? Yes! We had to temporarily close the adora-tion chapel because Church law requires at least one person to be in the presence of the exposed host. When COVID first hit, many of our scheduled adorers were unable to fulfill their duty and the chapel was left empty. We will rebuild our list of scheduled adorers and open the chapel back up at the right time. The church is open daily for ad-oration (Jesus is present the tabernacle, for more information on Eucharistic devotion see Eucharisticum Mysterium). How is the school doing? The school is doing well. Our new principal, Ms. Bowman, and the faculty and staff have worked hard to get us where we are today, and we are excited for the school’s future. Ms. Bowman has provided an update for the school in this bulletin. How are the priests doing? We are doing okay! This hasn’t been the easiest situation to navigate, but I think that things are going about as well as they can be. Fr. Thuc has already been here for almost 3 months, and he is really transitioning smoothly into the life of the parish (limited as it might be!). We would like to thank all of you for your support and your prayers. We will continue to follow the directives of the Cardinal and keep things as simple as possible. Please keep in mind that this whole COVID situa-tion is temporary. We don’t know exactly when everything will end... but we’ve al-ready made it through Spring and Summer! The days might get darker and darker, but we know that there will be bright days ahead!

Sincerely yours in Christ,

Fr. Clark

A note from the St. Thomas More Parish School Principal:

School is in full swing and our students are halfway through their first quarter. Much has happened in the past month. We progressively opened our doors to our students and we now have all of our in-person students on campus with 30% of our student population attending school remotely. The first quarter ends Thursday, October 15th and our remote learners inter-ested in returning to campus for in-person attendance may return Monday, October 19th.

Our students started attending Mass or Morning Prayer last week. Due to the pandemic we have altered our Mass schedule. Traditionally, we celebrated whole-school Mass every Friday and Mass was open to the public. To reduce opportunities for exposure, our students are at-tending mass by grade level and our school Masses are not open to the community. So that all students may participate in the liturgy during the week we created a Morning Prayer service which is run by Fr. Clark or Fr. Thuc in the school building. The designated priest will do the Liturgy of the Word for the day with each grade level while the other priest celebrates Mass in the church. The school is certainly keeping Fr. Clark and Fr. Thuc busy these days. We are very thankful to have such dedicated priests at STM!

STM has much to be proud of and one of the factors that makes us such a tight community is that we have legacy at our school. To showcase the impact of our work, we will begin a series highlighting our alumni. If you are an STM alum interested in participating, or you would like to nominate an STM alum, please contact our office so we can give you more information. We are excited to honor our graduates and look forward to hearing from our alumni.

Sincerely yours in Christ,

Carolina Bowman

Announcements Dear STM Family,

During the month of August, we were blessed to provide 93 families with

bags of food, feeding 330 individuals. A total of $11,960 was disbursed

for rent, utilities and furniture assisting 37 families (121 individuals).

Funds for this assistance was provided by our generous parishioners and

SVdP Council relief funds.

The need of our poor neighbors continues to be overwhelming with no end

in sight. Despite local and federal relief funds provided to numerous agencies, many fami-

lies are still facing evictions, their electricity and phone service are now disconnected and

they have no food or the means to obtain it. Thus, we continue the appeal for your support:

donations of food and funds, volunteers to help with phone calls, volunteers to safely deliver

food bags, prayers, prayers and more prayers!

Your fellow parishioner Vincentians are few but doing amazing work to serve the poor in our community. Please prayerfully consider joining us and sharing your gifts and talents. We grow in compassion and spirituality from the experience of helping our neigh-bors. The best antidote for the COVID-19 blues is helping a neighbor. Thank you in advance for your generosity. May God continue to bless all of us as we help his children during this crisis.

You may contact us by e-mailing [email protected] or leaving your name

and number at 713-980-3113 for a Vincentian to return your call. “Charity is the cement which binds Communities to God and persons to one another .”

Sacramento.

Te amo sobre todas las

cosas y deseo recibirte en

mi alma.

Como no puedo recibirte

en este momento sacra-

mentalmente, entra al

menos espiritualmente en

mi corazón.

Te abrazo como si ya estu-

vieras allí.

Y me uno totalmente a ti.

Nunca permitas que me

separe de ti.

Amen
