STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION May 312020

A special thank you to all who supported the church this past week during these uncertain times A total of $524400 was received for the church This is wonderful to see how much St Edward Parish means to our parishioners May God bless your continued generosity Is your love conditional Is there a price others have to pay to receive your love and forgiveness Are you generous with your time skills money and possessions If you give someone something do you expect something in return Do you give your time freely or do you ldquofit it inrdquo when itrsquos convenient for you God desires a personal relationship with us so much that He gave us His Son unconditionally Pray for a grateful and generous heart

Throughout the liturgical cycle of Sundays and seasons there are certain days that invite us to focus on particular aspects of our faith Today is such a day when we celebrate the solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity On this Sunday after Pentecost we reflect on the mystery of our Triune GodmdashFather Son and Holy Spirit From the moment of creation through the encounter of Moses with God on the mountain through Christrsquos life death and resurrection with the outpouring of the Holy Spirit our understanding and appreciation of Godrsquos very life has unfolded and deepened Jesus came into the world to make Godrsquos life and love known the love of God Father Son and Holy Spirit the love of God that brings us peace GOD IS MERCIFUL AND GRACIOUS At moments in our lives we may wonder how we know who God is or what God is like Todayrsquos readings help us to feel secure in placing our faith in God and being assured of Godrsquos unfailing love When Moses went up the mountain as the Lord had commanded him God powerfully described himself ldquoThe Lord the Lord a merciful and gracious God slow to anger and rich in kindness and fidelityrdquo Jesus shows us the depths of this life of God He came not to condemn the world but to save it As people in relationship with God we often fail We walk away from Godrsquos ways fall into sinfulness and then with the Lordrsquos grace come to our senses and return Godrsquos words to Moses and the very life of Jesus show us that when we do so we can still rely on Godrsquos mercy and kindness because love is Godrsquos very nature

FROM FATHER RICHARD - 2 articles ldquoHow lovely is your dwelling place O Lord of Hosts My soul yearns and pines for the courts of the Lord My heart and flesh cry out for the living Godrdquo Psalm 84 Dear Friends On March 15 we celebrated our last weekend Masses ndash and this weekend we begin them again The above psalm seems to put into words a thought that many of us are having ndash wersquove missed coming to Mass Wersquove missed receiving the Lord in Holy Communion Wersquove missed our community members ndash our fellow parishioners We missed the beauty of the house of God and the sweet sounds of our hymns THANK GOD WE ARE ON THE WAY BACK TO ALL THESE THINGS SO DEAR TO OUR HEARTS When I was in Crabtree I discovered the ldquoannouncement booksrdquo In the days before bulletins the priest would write out the announcements for each weekend A very enthusiastic Benedictine pastor named Father Method Shestic used the psalm written above to welcome back the parishioners in 1918 The world the country and even Westmoreland County had been devastated by the Spanish Influenza Churches schools work etcndash as like wersquove just experienced ndash were closed for months and months When I read those words 15 years ago I could never have imagined that someday ndash TODAY - actually I would be addressing the same reality Yes we are beginning Masses again In 1918 there were not livestreamed Masses ndash hey there wasnrsquot even radio But how often people have said that they have loved seeing the Masses on the various media but have missed their Sunday Mass at their church with their beloved neighborshellip And now by the Grace of God we are starting again Can we be grateful enough for this gift The best way to show the Heavenly Father our gratitude is by praying and loving the Holy Mass and receiving into our hearts the Lord Jesus who fulfills the desires of our heart and flesh May Godrsquos most abundant blessings be with all of you Amen Fr Richard

Dear Parishioners I was just talking to one of my brothers It was not an easy conversation We were discussing ldquothe present state of thingsrdquo The seeming calm of our routine has been shaken in deep ways Suddenly smoldering embers have burst into raging fires and we have all sorts of political and social unrest plus the coronavirus The worst part is that the way forward is hidden in a fog of uncertainty We want answers We want things resolved We want to go back to normal again We may want and want and even demand but solutions seem very slow in becoming apparent We can each contribute in small and large ways to resolving the problems of our day We can keep our attention on those things we can control But if we are honest we know that much of what happens in this world is way beyond us At the end of 2017 I spent 2 months in Guatemala It is the second to the poorest country of America Only Haiti is poorer There are so many crises in Guatemala that if yoursquod begin to try to grasp them you wouldnrsquot last long You would soon despair It is not the economy or government that sustains the Guatemalan people ndash it is their faith and trust in God God is not a theory to them ndash God is a loving wise Father who is guiding things ndash even in the middle of uncertainty and confusion There was a woman in the city where I stayed There was an enormous basilica there Esquipulas is the name of the town Do yourself a favor and look it up Everyday thousands of people from Mexico Guatemala Honduras El Salvador and other countries go there to pray before the beautiful image of Jesus Crucified They go to beg help They go to give thanks They go to seek wisdom And generations and generations have seen the results and learned to trust To be honest with ourselves and realize that there are many things in this world that are beyond our resolving is not to give up ndash it is to accept reality Jesus in his lovely and simple way pointed this out especially in Matthew 6 and Mark 4 35 to 41 Trusting in God is powerful and wonderful and can bring about things we never dreamed were possible This is because we are bound by the earth ndash God is not Instead of getting worked up about the present situation letrsquos work on trust and obedience to God our Father Fr Richard
