bring them to the school office—and we may be able to use them! Being read to as a young child is a proven key to later academic success. But more importantly, there is a bond that develops between the reader and the listener. Please, take advantage of our Little Free Library® - you and your child will be glad you did! October is a busy month! The classes have settled down into their routines, so now it is time to introduce some special activities. Bike helmets have arrived, so now the 3’s & 4’s will be able to ride the tricycles! There are All School Sings as we get ready for the Halloween Programs at the end of the month. Teachers from “Super Duper” Sports will be here two days for everyone; and the 4’s classes will take their first field trip to the Pumpkin Patch at Ramsey’s Farm! If that is not enough, there are school picture days, Denim Days for the adults, and the Yankee Candle Sale. And of course, the 17th Annual Ice Cream Social on Saturday, October 5th (6:00-7:30 pm)! Be sure to reply to the Evite so we have enough ice cream! The waiting list is now open for the 2020-2021. Children here currently do not have to be placed on that list—but their siblings should! Any questions, stop in the office or send me an email! I hope that your Halloween is spirited and full of fun!
Happy Haunting! Fondly,
Janet Leishman
What is an appropriate tribute to a lifelong educator? In our case, it is this Little Free Library®. When Phyllis Conner (Director of our school from 1973-1983) passed away a little over two years ago, her son and daughter designated gifts in their mother’s memory to the school. The staff was aware of Phyllis’ dedication to young children and that the Pre-school Library at The Tatnall School is named in her honor (Phyllis retired from there in 1993). After a discussion with the Board and Father Brad, we decided we would use those monies to expand our book collection. But Phyllis was also active in her community, so how could we honor that as well? Our PTPA leadership a few years prior talked about a community lending library. And now, it could be a reality. So, with some of the funds, we purchased this two-story, little red schoolhouse! We plan to stock it with quality children’s books (hardback and paperback) and invite YOU our community to take a book, read it, and then return it! While some Little Free Libraries have books for all ages, we will have books primarily for young children (infants through elementary ages). If you see something you’d like to read with your child, or your child would like to read, please take it and then return it. If your child has books he/she has outgrown, please

We have an incredible opportunity and responsibility where a child’s spiritual like is concerned. Our position may be second only to a child’s home environment in our ability to provide the fundamental spiritual frame-work and religious worldview. Our hope is that our Christian-based chapel services will be instructive, enjoy-able, understandable, and memorable. Everyone is welcome at our weekly chapels. The dates for October are: Thursday, October 3 Wednesday, October 9 Thursday, October 24 Chapel will begin as close to 9:15 as possible. Our morning worship begins with . . . “This is the day that the Lord has made. We will rejoice and be glad in it.” The words to our Children’s Creed are: I believe in God above. I believe in Jesus’ love. I believe the Spirit too, Comes to show me what to do. I believe that I can be, Kind and gentle, Lord, like You. The ending call and response is . . . “Let us bless the Lord - Thanks be to God.”
Music is a large part of our joyful noise to the Lord. Sandy Pierce has been providing our music since the mid-eighties, and we thank you for her love and commitment. She usually plays an instrument called an “omnichord.” Songs we are learning include “This Little Light of Mine,,” “I’ve Got the Joy, Joy, Joy, Down in My Heart,” and “Jesus Loves Me.” A favorite song that the children do acapella is “Love Grows.” Here are the words:
Love grows, One by one, Two by two,
And four by four.
Love grows, Round like a circle.
And comes back knocking At your front door!
Twice a year, St. David’s Church and St. David’s Day School families bring gently used men’s, women’s, and children’s clothing to St. David’s Church. The clothes are then picked up by a van from the The Clothing Bank of Delaware to be distributed to those who need them. The van will be here on Sunday morning, October 13th. Tax receipts will be available that morning from the driver. But, if you want to bring those donations to the school before then, drop them off on October 10th or 11th and we will make sure the bags get to the van on Sunday!
Thank you!

Everything I Need to Know I Learned in Preschool
You may be familiar with the quote and book by Robert Fulghum, All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten (1986).
“Most of what I really need To know about how to live
And what to do and how to be I learned in Kindergarten.”
“Share,
Play fair, Don’t hit people,
Put things back where you found them, Clean up your own mess,
Don’t take things that aren’t yours, Say you’re sorry when you hurt somebody,
Wash hands before you eat, Flush,
Learn some and think some And draw and paint and sing and dance
And play and work everyday some. When you go out into the world,
Watch out for traffic, Hold hands and stick together.
Be aware of Wonder.”
What a wonderful way to live by for not only children but for teenagers and adults as well!
Preschool is a stepping stone to learning!!
Learning to share and take turns! Listen and follow directions!
Make new friends and play well with others! Make choices and problem solve!
Use imaginations and make-believe! Observe and discover!
Explore and experiment! Most of all Fun and Laughter, too!
Discover the child in you! Bev Igo, Curriculum Coordinator

You may have seen this on your social media feed - and it was probably created for older children, but it can certainly be modified for use with preschoolers. Here are a few other questions you could ask: Tell me about the story you heard today? What did you do on the playground today?
Were there puzzles to play with? Or dress-ups? Did you ride bikes today or go for a walk?
What song(s) did you sing with Mrs. Pierce in chapel/all school sing? Who did you play with today?
Almost any topic works - just stay away from questions with Yes/No answers! Give it a try!

DENIM DAYS FOR THE AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY
St. David’s Episcopal Day School exists to provide a nurturing, Christian community where children can learn and grow. We do this through:
Leading each child into caring relationships with peers and adults;
Offering each child a stimulating learning experience;
Valuing each child’s unique growth; and,
Encouraging each child’s awareness of God in the world.
Ours is a safe environment where children ages two through five are encouraged to grow spiritually, emotionally, cognitively, socially, and physically so their greatest potential may be realized.
