THE LESSONA Reading from the Word of God written in the Book of Isaiah Chapter 43 beginning at the 16th verse

Thus says the LORD, who makes a way in the sea, a path in the mighty waters, who brings forth chariot and horse, army and warrior; they lie down, they cannot rise, they are extinguished, quenched like a wick: "Remember not the former things, nor consider the things of old. Behold, I am doing a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it? I will make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert. The wild beasts will honour me, the jackals and the ostriches; for I give water in the wilderness, rivers in the desert, to give drink to my chosen people, the people whom I formed for myself that they might declare my praise.

Psalm 126 In convertendo 1 When the Lord restored the fortunes of Zion, * then were we like those who dream. 2 Then was our mouth filled with laughter, * and our tongue with shouts of joy. 3 Then they said among the nations, * “The Lord has done great things for them.” 4 The Lord has done great things for us, * and we are glad indeed. 5 Restore our fortunes, O Lord, * like the watercourses of the Negev. 6 Those who sowed with tears * will reap with songs of joy. 7 Those who go out weeping, carrying the seed, * will come again with joy, shouldering their sheaves. Glory to the Father, and to the Son;*and to the Holy

Spirit; As it was in the beginning is now:*and shall be forever. Amen.

THE EPISTLE

A Reading from the Word of God written in the Letter to the Philippians Chapter 3 beginning at the 8th verse.

Indeed I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them as refuse, in order that I may gain Christ  and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own, based on law, but that which is through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God that depends on faith;  that I may know him and the power of his resurrection, and may share his sufferings, becoming like him in his death,  that if possible I may attain the resurrection from the dead. Not that I have already obtained this or am already perfect; but I press on to make it my own, because Christ Jesus has made me his own. Brethren, I do not consider that I have made it my own; but one thing I do, forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead,  I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.

THE HOLY GOSPEL

Gospeller: The Lord be with you.ALL: And also with you.

Gospeller: A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to LukeALL: Glory to Christ our Saviour

At that time,  Jesus began to tell the people this parable: "A man planted a vineyard, and let it out to tenants, and went into another country for a long while. When the time came, he sent a servant to the tenants, that they should give him some of the fruit of the vineyard; but the tenants beat him, and sent him away empty-handed.  And he sent another servant; him also they beat and treated shamefully, and sent him away empty-handed.  And he sent yet a third; this one they wounded and cast out.  Then the owner of the vineyard said, `What shall I do? I will send my beloved son; it may be they will respect him.'  But when the tenants saw him, they said to themselves, `This is the heir; let us kill him, that the inheritance may be ours.'  And they cast him out of the vineyard and killed him. What then will the owner of the vineyard do to them?  He will come and destroy those tenants, and give the vineyard to others." When they heard this, they said, "God forbid!"  But he looked at them and said, "What then is this that is written: `The very stone which the builders rejected has become the head of the corner'? Every one who falls on that stone will be broken to pieces; but when it falls on any one it will crush him."  The scribes and the chief priests tried to lay hands on him at that very hour, but they feared the people; for they perceived that he had told this parable against them.

Gospeller: The Gospel of ChristALL: Praise to Christ our Lord.

From the Rector’s Notebook

Greetings:

Firstly let me congratulate the members of the PCC who have assumed office at the initial meeting for the 2013-2015 period, God willing.

They are Wardens: Tony Kirton (Selected by the Rector) and William Jones, Treasurer: Mr. Cecil Collymore, Secretary: Ms. Julie Dionne Welch, Assistant Secretary Treasurer: Ms. Julia Weekes, Chair of the Building Committee: Mr. George Holder, Chair of Youth Committee: Gary Durant.

Please pray for the wardens and members of the PCC. We live in a society in which criticism is in excess and praise is often not as forthcoming.

There is no doubt that constructive and objective scrutiny can help all of us to do carry out our tasks with greater diligence, recognising that we are the body of Christ together.

It is very important, challenging and yet extremely rewarding to work in the church and to use one’s gifts and abilities in the the service of God almighty.

Each one of us must think of ways in which we can assist in the ministry to which we are all called. Paul the Apostle has put it beautifully when he writes

5TH SUNDAY IN LENT ! MARCH 17, 2013

! PAGE 8

Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; and there are varieties of service, but the same Lord; and there are varieties of working, but it is the same God who inspires them all in every one. 1 Corinthians 12: 4-6.

The little form printed in last week’s and this week’s bulletin when completed will give us a good idea as to what areas of ministry we feel God almighty to be calling us.

On another note, as we approach Holy Week you would be aware that your awareness of its significance is highly recognised.

Your prayers and presence, will be required both for your active participation in the rites and also for your good understanding of the meaning of the Paschal Mystery and the christian faith as a whole.

We believe and participate in order that we may understand and furthermore that we may be so informed that we can explain to others what these rites mean within the context of our church.

A list of services can be found within this bulletin. Please note them in your calendar and make plans to attend.

Your friend and priest,Noel A. Burke, MA (The Rev’d Canon)Rector
