SUNDAY READINGS July 12, 2020 Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

READING 1 Is 55:10–11Thus says the LORD:Just as from the heavens the rain and snow come downand do not return there till they have watered the earth, making it fertile and fruitful, giving seed to the one who sows and bread to the one who eats,so shall my word be that goes forth from my mouth;my word shall not return to me void, but shall do my will, achieving the end for which I sent it.

Responsorial Psalm Ps 65:10, 11, 12–13, 14The seed that falls on good ground will yield a fruitful harvest.

READING 2 Rom 8:18–23Brothers and sisters: I consider that the sufferings of this present time are as nothing compared with the glory to be revealed for us. For creation awaits with eager expectation the revelation of the children of God; for creation was made subject to futility, not of its own accord but because of the one who subjected it, in hope that creation itself would be set free from slavery to corruption and share in the glorious freedom of the children of God. We know that all creation is groaning in labor pains even until now; and not only that, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, we also groan within ourselves as we wait for adoption, the redemption of our bodies.

GOSPEL Mt 13:1–9On that day, Jesus went out of the house and sat down by the sea. Such large crowds gathered around him that he got into a boat and sat down, and the whole crowd stood along the shore. And he spoke to them at length in parables, saying: “A sower went out to sow. And as he sowed, some seed fell on the path, and birds came and ate it up. Some fell on rocky ground, where it had little soil. It sprang up at once because the soil was not deep, and when the sun rose it was scorched, and it withered for lack of roots. Some seed fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked it. But some seed fell on rich soil, and produced fruit, a hundred or sixty or thirtyfold. Whoever has ears ought to hear.”Excerpts from the Lectionary for Mass for Use in the Dioceses of the United States of America, second typical edition © 2001, 1998, 1997, 1986, 1970 Confraternity of Christian Doctrine, Inc., Washington, DC. SAINT KATERI TEKAKWITHA (1656—1680)

July 14

Though the New York State Thruway runs close by the North American Martyrs’ Shrine, traffic’s roar never pierces the peace enveloping Auriesville—Ossernon to Native Americans—in the lovely Mohawk Valley, where Kateri Tekakwitha was born barely ten years after the martyrdom of Isaac Jogues and his Jesuit and lay companions. Daughter of a Christian Algonquin mother and non–Christian Mohawk chief, Kateri’s parents died in a smallpox epidemic widely blamed on the missionaries. Moreover, many Native Americans had experienced exploitation at the hands of “Christian” traders and trappers, further discrediting the faith Kateri embraced in baptism, then pledged to live even more intensely in vowed virginity. Misunderstanding led to harassment, prompting her move to a Christian village farther north along the Saint Lawrence River. Despite this, Kateri’s faith remained undaunted, her selfless charity undiminished. Both before and after her death at twenty–four, this young “Lily of the Mohawks” drew countless converts to Christ by the fragrance of her goodness. Through us, does “the aroma of Christ” (2 Corinthians 2:15), attract others to the beauty of his gospel?

GOD’S WORDS

Each day we are bombarded with thousands of words. From the moment our clock radios click on in the morning, until the last moment of the day when the television is turned off or someone bids us “goodnight,” our life is filled with words. Some words that we hear bring news that leaves us feeling low. Some words lift our spirits. Many of the words we hear are trying to get us to buy something. Some words are hurtful. Today the Church focuses our attention on hearing the word of God. Are God’s words just more of the same—part of the endless stream of words that flow into our ears each day? The challenge today is to allow God’s word to inspire us in new ways so that our outlook and attitudes align themselves more closely with the heart and mind of Christ Jesus.

ON MORTALITY, AND GLORYstguerinparish.org 6

Mortality–wise, let’s just say I’m a bit more focused than I used to be. I’ve been receiving ashes and going to Easter Mass for decades, so I’ve always known

that those who die with Christ, rise with him. Which is not to say that I’ve ever understood it. I took it on faith when I was a kid, because this is

what my mom and the nuns at St. Anthony taught me. As I grew, I learned more. I read some of the Catechism’s take on the subject, but this is still a faith thing for me, as it is, ultimately, for everyone. So while I don’t get the resurrection of the body, I buy into it. And this pandemic has made me think about it more, probably because I’m not feeling nearly as invincible these days as I once did.

It wasn’t that long ago—fifteen years, maybe—that I went to my doctor for a physical. I still remember her asking me, “What hurts?” In my memory, it was the first time she’d posed the question, and it threw me because 1) it came out of the blue, and 2) nothing did. She said that everybody at my age—something north of 50—had some body part that hurts. I told her again that I felt fine. No issues. I remember her saying that this was surprising, and she congratulated me on my wellbeing. That was then, of course. I’ll be seeing her for my yearly

physical in the fall, and if she asks me again, I’ll have a different answer. As in, “Everything.”

I was out for an early AM run a couple of months ago and in my head, I started going through all of my nagging pains. Ankle. Knee. Hip. Arm. Shoulder. Yikes! And I can’t tell you why, but right in the middle of my checklist, I started thinking about the resurrection of the body. I’m guessing now that such timing was pandemic and mortality–related. Regardless, I remember thinking “Man! It’s going to be great! I’ll be fast again. And strong again. And nothing will hurt again!” I’m telling you true: I started grinning ear–to–ear, midstride and all alone in the breaking dawn. Of course, I have no idea if this is how the resurrection of the body works, but hey! A guy can dream…

And all of this comes to mind as I read the Apostle Paul’s letter to the Romans today. “Brothers and sisters” he begins, “I consider that

the sufferings of this present time are as nothing compared with the glory to be revealed for us.”

Well, there you go. This letter actually picks up where Paul dropped off last week, but not quite. Because last week he was talking about living in the spirit vs. the flesh, and like I said, he opens this week talking about the pain that living in the flesh can bring. But in the four verses inbetween, he reminds us that in the midst of our suffering, we are children of God, enabling us to cry out Abba! Father! And he tells us, too, that as children of God, we are coheirs with the Christ, so that in suffering with him, we will also be glorified with him. The pandemic is still scary, and I’m far from invincible, but I’m gonna be fast again someday. Smile, all. We be glorybound.

FROM OUR PRINCIPAL

Dear St. Celestine School Families:

St. Celestine School continues to prepare for face–to–face learning in the fall, with our first day of school being August 20. Every effort is underway to provide a safe, healthy, calm start to the year, integrating the expectations of the Archdiocese of Chicago and Illinois State Board of Education into our educational program. As clarity around them continues to evolve, I will keep you posted on what changes to expect.

Thanks to the families who completed the survey on our remote learning program. Over 80 families provided information on their experiences. That information has already been used to make some decisions about educational programming so that we are well situated for anything the future holds. This includes the following improvements:

• Teachers are participating in professional development opportunities and webinars tied to both face–to–face instruction and remote instruction during the summer.

• Additional devices are being procured to support students who may need them as loaners in the future, should a return to remote learning occur at any point in the future.

• Some teachers are getting loaner devices to support their technical needs to host GoogleMeets and lessons, since many of them have older devices.

• Curriculum materials with both print and on–line capabilities are being purchased as available.St. Celestine School is being proactive to support and improve so that all of our students can learn and all of our teachers can teach.

We strive to stand apart from all schools in the area in terms of what we have and what we offer. That is true for face–to–face instruction and remote learning. The school never stops in its quest to be the best for you and your family. Please reach out to me if you have any questions at all.

Sincerely and With Gratitude and Blessings,

Sheila M. KlichPrincipal of St. Celestine School

Prayer of the Archdiocese for the Military ServicesAlmighty God and Father, look with love upon our men and women in uniform and protect them in their time of need. Give them health and stability and allow them to return to their loved ones whole and unshaken. Be with their families and sustain them in these uncertain times.

Grant strength and peace of mind to the Veterans who have given their best for the country they love. Support them in infirmity and in the fragility of old age. Teach us to remember their sacrifices and to express our gratitude.Manifest your tender care to those in the Military Academies who prepare for future service and to those who serve our Nation far from home. Teach us to remember the sacrifices of those whose efforts contribute to ensuring our way of life. Hear us as we present our prayers to You through Christ our Lord. Amen. Archbishop Timothy Broglio

Please keep those serving in the military in your prayers. Thank you for your service to our country.
