Thoughts from the Second Floor Front The Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ

June 6, 2021 It is all about the Blood. When Moses sprinkled the blood of the sacrificed animals on the altar and then on the people, he joined the people to God, by the Blood. The author of the letter to the Hebrews is making a reference to the celebration of Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement. With the blood of the sacri-ficed animals the people are liturgically joined to God, by the Blood. Through the celebration of the Mass, we are joined to God, not by the blood of animals but by the Blood of Christ, the Victim who died once, rose and will never die again. All of this is done in the context of a meal, a sacrificial meal, a sacred meal. St. Augustine holds that there is no such thing as a coincidence. Think about the date today – June 6th. It was on this day over three quarters of a century ago, that men stormed the beaches of Normandy to release those who were under the boot of Nazi terror and give them again what they enjoyed as free men and women. The Greatest Generation wrote Tom Brokaw in his reflections that what they did in those days came with such a terrible cost. Through the blood shed by them in the continent of Europe people were freed from tyranny. The freedom we enjoy as citizens is only a shadow of the freedom we enjoy as disciples of Christ. The world, the contemporary society in which we live would confuse freedom with license. The bread and the wine that is transformed on our altar with the celebration of the Eucharist is also a moment when we can also be transformed. The ordinary stuff of bread and wine are miraculously transformed into the ex-traordinary presence of Jesus, His body and blood. When the priests extends his hands over the gifts and prays that the gifts be transformed into the Body and Blood of Christ, those hands are also extended over the other gifts that are present – the people of God. We too are to be transformed in the Body and Blood of Christ. Jesus’ actions and words were done and spoken within the framework of the Passover Meal, the celebration of the freedom from slavery given to the people of Israel. There is also a transition to the new covenantal sacrifice, Himself on our behalf establishing us in freedom as Children of God, Disciples of Christ, members of the Body of Christ. It was a popular pious practice on this day to hold a Eucharistic Procession. It is still a popular custom in Europe and Central and South America and other parts of the world. Too bad that the tradition has been steadily fading, To walk with the Eucharist on the streets of one’s home town is a bold statement of faith and a manifestation of a willingness to publicly offer personal testimony. Jesus’ Blood of the new covenant alludes to both the ancient rite of Exodus and the Jewish Seder meal. His blood also calls on the members of the new community to appreciate His Sacred Presence in the Blessed Sacrament. Although we do not hold a procession and bring the Eucharistic presence of Jesus into our com-munities, we are nevertheless mandated to bring His presence as we are able. While His presence is an experience like none other in the celebration of the Eucharist, He is not limited to the Sacramental pres-ence alone. Reflect on the words of St. Teresa of Ávila:

Christ has not body now but yours. No hands, no feet on earth but yours. Yours are the eyes through which he looks with compassion on this world. Yours are the feet with which he walks to do good. Yours are the hands, yours the feet, yours the eyes, you are His body. Christ has no body on earth but yours.

On this day reflect on the beauty of Christ in the Eucharist and being Christ for others through your body, hands, eyes and feet. Receive Christ and be Christ for others. Faithfully, Msgr. Diamond

ST. COR LI S FAIR TRAD SALST. COR LI S FAIR TRAD SAL Saturday, June 5 & Sunday, June 6 After all Masses

Chocolate, Coffee, Tea, Olive Oil, Balsamic Vinegar & Nuts will be for sale. All proceeds benefit Catholic Relief Services.

Fair Trade Items support Catholic Social Teaching Option for the Poor and The Dignity of Work. “The obligation to earn one’s bread by the sweat of one’s brow also presumes the right to do so. A society in which this right is systematically denied, in which economic policies do not allow workers to reach satisfactory levels of employment, cannot be justified from an ethical point of view, nor can that society attain social peace.” —St. John Paul II, The Hundredth Year (Centesimus Annus), no. 43

WHY FAIR TRAD ?WHY FAIR TRAD ? Fair trade is an effective way to make a difference in the lives of people who grow our food. Fair trade fights poverty and climate change and supports workers’ rights. Through fair trade, small-scale farmers and artisans are better able to support their families; stay on their land with better in-come and support from their co-operatives; build their own businesses; and improve their communi-ties.

St. Cornelius volunteers support Family Promise, a non-profit which serves homeless families in southern Chester County. St. Cornelius volunteers partners with Kennett Presbyterian Church in this ministry for a week four times a year. The hope is that we will resume the program in the near future. All volunteers are asked to be sure they are up-to-date with their criminal and child abuse clearances. Family Promise is currently exploring ways to pro-vide social services to families on a waiting list and living temporarily with relatives or friends. Family Promise covers the costs of hotels when necessary.

“For where your treasure is, there also will your heart be.”

Luke 12:34

When the bread and wine become the Body of Christ, why do they still look and taste like bread and wine? In the celebration of the Eucharist, the glorified Christ becomes present under the appearances of bread and wine in a way that is unique, a way that is uniquely suited to the Eucharist. In the Church’s traditional theological language, in the act of consecration during the Eucharist the “substance” of the bread and wine is changed by the power of the Holy Spirit into the “substance” of the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ. At the same time, the “accidents” or appearances of bread and wine remain. “Substance” and “accident” are here used as philosophical terms that have been adapted by great medieval theologi-ans such as St. Thomas Aquinas in their efforts to under-stand and explain the faith. Such terms are used to convey the fact that what appears to be bread and wine in every way (at the level of “accidents” or physical attributes––that is, what can be seen, touched, tasted, or measured) in fact is now the Body and Blood of Christ (at the level of “substance” or deepest reality). This change at the level of substance from bread and wine into the Body and Blood of Christ is called “transubstantiation.” According to Catholic faith, we can speak of the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist because this transubstantiation has occurred (cf. Catechism, no. 1376). Anima Christi Prayer

Soul of Christ, be my sanctification. Body of Christ, be my salvation. Blood of Christ, fill all my veins. Water of Christ’s side, wash out my stains. Passion of Christ, my comfort be. O good Jesus, listen to me. In Thy wounds I fain would hide, Ne’er to be parted from Thy side, Guard me, should the foe assail me. Call me when my life shall fail me. Bid me come to Thee above, With Thy saints to sing Thy love, World without end. Amen.

Centering Prayer a Spiritual Practice This prayer has been referred to as an inward prac-tice, a way to sit with God without words. It is to con-sent to Divine presence that is waiting for you. Centering Prayer is an at-tempt to present the teach-ing of earlier times in an updated form. Centering Prayer is not meant to re-place other kinds of prayer; rather it casts a new light and depth of meaning on them. It is at the same time a relationship with God and a discipline to foster that relationship. This method of prayer is a movement beyond conversation with Christ to communion with Him (after all silence is God's first language). We are planning an Introduction to Centering Prayer in the very near future. If you have an inter-est or wish to join us or just listen in, the Centering Prayer Group meets on Zoom, Saturday mornings at 8:15. The St . Cornel iu s Li terary Socie ty

It is the first time we are taking on a murder mystery. Think about joining us in a few weeks. Fired by my never-ending efforts to educate, evangelize and entertain, I can assure you that the discussions are always lively.

The votes are in and the selection for next month’s effort for the St. Cornelius Literary Society is Coit Tower by Bill Issel. San Francisco, 1942. Four months after Pearl Harbor. No one knows if the Japanese will in-vade California and occupy San Fran-cisco. Harlan Winthrop, a high society banker who heads the city's war bonds campaign is stabbed to death. The pro-Axis greeting "RoBerTo" is painted on the wall next to the body in Coit Tower. Is this killing part of a plot to weaken morale by creating even more anxiety among San Franciscans? Police Chief Gerald O'Reilly keeps the murder from the press and the public. He's afraid the dramatic cir-cumstances of the crime could aggravate the deep divi-sions in the city. Residents are tense and split into fac-tions.

A date and time for our gathering has yet to be determined. In the mean time enjoy these spring days with Coit Tower.

CRS NATIONAL SPOTLIGHT CRS calls on American leadership to have the same boldness in addressing the global COVID-19 pandemic as they did in the early 2000s when the U.S. launched The President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief in re-sponse to the AIDS pandemic. Visit www.crs.org for more information! "We don't have to look too far into the past to see an example of the type of global public health lead-ership the U.S. is capable of. In response to the AIDS pandemic of the early 2000s, the U.S. launched The President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief, arguably one of the most successful public health initiatives in history. American leadership at the time took the risk because it was the right thing to do. We need to have the same boldness now."

The Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ

On the Solemnity of the Body and Blood of Christ, we give special honor to Jesus, truly present in the most Blessed Sacrament of the altar. As Catholics, we wor-ship the presence of Jesus Christ in the Eucharist, both during Mass and outside of Mass. We are encouraged to spend time in prayer before the Lord in the Eucharist. Many parishes offer regular exposition of the Blessed Sacrament in a mon-strance. We may also choose to visit the church at other times to adore the Blessed Sacrament reserved in the tabernacle.

Why does Jesus give himself to us as food and drink?

Jesus gives himself to us in the Eucharist as spiritual nourishment because he loves us. God’s whole plan for our salvation is directed to our participation in the life of the Trinity, the communion of Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Our sharing in this life begins with our Baptism, when by the power of the Holy Spirit we are joined to Christ, thus becoming adopted sons and daughters of the Father. It is strengthened and increased in Confir-mation. It is nourished and deepened through our par-ticipation in the Eucharist. By eating the Body and drinking the Blood of Christ in the Eucharist we be-come united to the person of Christ through his hu-manity. . . In being united to the humanity of Christ we are at the same time united to his divinity. Our mortal and corruptible natures are transformed by being joined to the source of life. By being united to Christ through the power of the Holy Spirit dwelling in us, we are drawn up into the eternal relationship of love among the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. As Jesus is the eternal Son of God by na-ture, so we become sons and daughters of God by adop-tion through the sacrament of Baptism. Through the sacraments of Baptism and Confirmation (Chrismation), we are temples of the Holy Spirit, who dwells in us, and by his in dwelling we are made holy by the gift of sanctifying grace. The ultimate promise of the Gospel is that we will share in the life of the Ho-ly Trinity. The Fathers of the Church called this partic-ipation in the divine life “divinization” (theosis). In this we see that God does not merely send us good things from on high; instead, we are brought up into the inner life of God, the communion among the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. In the celebration of the Eucharist (which means “thanksgiving”) we give praise and glory to God for this sublime gift. The introduction of this article is taken from the Catholic Household Blessings and Prayers, Revised Edition (Washington, DC: USCCB, 2007) 146. The article “Why does Jesus give him-self to us as food and drink? Is an excerpt from The Real Presence of Jesus Christ in the Sacrament of the Eucharist: Basic Questions and Answers by the Committee on Doctrine of the USCCB. (June 2001 General Meeting)

St. Norbert of Xanten Feast Day, June 6 In the 12th century in the French region of Premontre, Saint Norbert founded a religious Order known as the Praemonstratensians or the Norbertines. His founding of the Order was a monumental task: com-bating rampant heresies - particular-ly regarding the Blessed Sacrament, revitalizing many of the faithful who had grown indifferent and dissolute, plus effecting peace and reconcilia-tion among enemies. Norbert entertained no pretensions about his own ability to accomplish this multiple task. Even with the aid of a goodly number of men who joined his Order, he realized that nothing could be effectively done without God’s power. Finding this help especially in devotion to the Blessed Sacrament, he and his Norbertines praised God for success in converting heretics, reconciling numerous enemies, and rebuilding faith in indiffer-ent believers. Many of them lived in central houses during the week and served in parishes on weekends. Reluctantly, Norbert became archbishop of Magdeburg in cen-tral Germany, a territory half pagan and half Christian. In this position he zealously and courageously continued his work for the Church until his death on June 6, 1134.

Today there are four abbeys located in the US: St. Norbert Abbey, DePere, WI, Daylesford Abbey, Paoli, PA, St. Michael’s Abbey, Silverado, Orange County CA, and Santa Maria de La Vid, Albuquerque, NM. Also, there is a commu-nity of Norbertine Canonesses in Orange CA.
