Sacrament Preparation Attendance at Mass as a family is an important part of sacrament preparation. This will help your child

to better understand what they learn in class and give them a greater understanding of the celebration of the Eucharist.

For purposes of proper catechesis, the Diocese of Austin requires a minimum of two (2) full year’s preparation before reception of the sacraments First Reconciliation and First Holy Communion; preparation therefore begins when the child enters 1st grade. First grade catechesis is a pre-requisite for children entering into final preparation for the sacraments in second grade.

2nd Grade students (children 7-8 years old) will receive the sacrament of Holy Communion (Eucharist) for the first time at the end of the school year. The Alive in Christ curriculum series from Our Sunday Visitor is used to teach the fundamentals of the sacraments. Two (2) full years of religious education, preferably beginning in kindergarten, is required for all students requesting to receive the sacrament of Fist Holy Communion in second grade.

3rd -12th Grade students who have been baptized into the Catholic faith and have not received the sacrament of First Holy Communion are placed in a multi-grade class for a minimum of 2 years preparation. There are additional prayer requirements for their age and students are encouraged to begin a faith journal at home.

Parents should understand that preparation can be extended if the student does not adequately express an understanding of the faith concepts for their age and grade level. Students with special learning or developmental needs will be evaluated under separate guidelines.

If you have not already done so, please provide a copy of your child’s Baptismal Certificate (even if your child was baptized at St. Elizabeth) to the RE office no later than November 1. The church of baptism can provide you with a duplicate copy if you cannot find your original copy.

Sin embargo, para obtener una catequesis apropiada, la Diócesis de Austin requiere un mínimo de dos años de preparación antes de recibir los sacramentos de primera comunión; preparación comienza por lo tanto, cuando el niño entra en 1er grado. 3º- 12º Grado los alumnos que vayan a recibir los sacramentos de reconciliación y primera comunión deberán acudir a las clases de preparación para alumnos mayores que serán impartidas en el mismo horario regular de su clase de catecismo, además de que deberán realizar proyectos y trabajo en casa.

Los padres de familia también deben entender que este periodo se puede alargar si el alumno no tiene un entendimiento adecuado de los conceptos de la fe de acuerdo con su edad y grado escolar.

Si Usted aun no lo ha hecho, favor de traer una fotocopia del Certificado de Bautismo de su Hijo (a) y entregarlo en la oficina de RE lo antes 1 de noviembre. Si Usted no posee una copia del Certificado de Bautismo favor de contactar a la oficina de la Iglesia donde su hijo (a) fue bautizado y pida la copia.

First Reconciliation

Children will celebrate the sacrament of Reconciliation (Confession) during November. For class specific times, please see “Important Dates to Remember.

Please arrive by 6:45 p.m. so that we may begin on time. The Reconciliation service will be held in the Church and specifically geared to the children. Children will sit with their class during the service. Additional priests will be in attendance so that the services are concluded by 8:30 p.m.

Parents are encouraged to be present in the church during the penance services, however we ask that no pictures be taken and everyone sit in silent meditation. Once they have completed their penance, children may leave with their parent.

Parents will not be able to attend the sacrament of confession on this night. Reconciliation at St. Elizabeth is regularly available on Saturdays from 8:45 to 9:30 a.m. & 3:30-4:45 pm, Tuesday & Wednesday from 5 -- 5:45 p.m. and Thursdays from 6:00-7:00 pm. Parents are encouraged to regularly attend reconciliation with their children as a family during these times and also during the parish Advent and Lenten Penance services.

Readiness Requirements

The process of the sacrament of Reconciliation will be explained to children during class as they prepare for the sacrament, as well as by the priest before the celebration of the sacrament. Parents are encouraged to review these steps with your child to ensure he / she understands what will occur. Additionally, the children will be instructed on how to make an examination of conscience. Our conscience is God’s gift to us that helps us know and choose right from wrong. The examination of conscience is based on the Ten Commandments, The Beatitudes and Christian morality. A copy of the steps for confession and how to make an examination of conscience is included on pages 7-10 of this packet.

Additionally, children, at a minimum, should have memorized these following prayers prior to receiving the Sacrament of Reconciliation:

Teachers will also be teaching children the Act of Contrition during class. While the students do not have to memorize the Act of Contrition, they should know when it is used, what it means and how to start the prayer. Please know that if the children do not know the above prayers, there have been occasions where the priest has called over the parents to teach these prayers to the children. Prayers can be memorized in either English or Spanish. Get a head start and pray every day!

Primera Reconciliación

La celebración del sacramento de Primera Reconciliación (Confesión ) se llevara a cabo en los siguientes 6:45 p.m. de noviembre. Para momentos específicos de la clase, por favor vea "importantes fechas para recordar.

Nuestra conciencia es un regalo de Dios para nosotros que nos ayuda a conocer y elegir el bien del mal. Examination of Conscience

Begin by praying to the Holy Spirit to help you examine your conscience. “Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful, and enkindle in them the fire of your love. Send forth your Spirit and they shall be created, and you will renew the face of the earth. Lord, by the light of Holy Spirit you have taught the hearts of your faithful. In the same Spirit help us to understand what is right and always rejoice in your mercy. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.”

Think about the laws, rules, and guidance God has given us to help us know right from wrong and to love as he loves: the Ten Commandments, the Beatitudes, the Great Commandment, the New Commandment

How to Receive the Sacrament Reconciliation

Children will meet in the church as a group. Priest will briefly discuss the sacrament of reconciliation with them and share a Bible reading.

Children will say the Act of Contrition together as a group then form a line to meet the Priest for confession. There will be two (2) chairs in the space where he/she will go to confession. The child will sit in the one that is empty, as the priest confessor is sitting in the other.

STEP 1 As Child walks to sitting area, PRIEST makes the sign of the cross and SAYS In the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, Amen.

STEP 2 Child makes the sign of the cross and SAYS Forgive me father for I have sinned.

This is my first confession. (Child lists their sins.) I have __________________________________________.

For these and all my sins, I am sorry.

STEP 3 The priest will then give you some advice and a Penance (prayer or prayers to be said in thanksgiving for absolution). Priest will give you absolution and forgive the sins In the Name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Amen

STEP 4 CHILD SAYS Thanks be to God. Child leaves the confessional and goes into the church to kneel and pray the Penance given by the Priest. (If the Priest does not recommend a prayer as Penance, the child should still go into the church to kneel and give thanks).

ACT OF CONTRITIONMy God, I am sorry for my sins with all my heart.In choosing to do wrong and failing to do good,I have sinned against you whom I should love above all things.

Cómo recibir la Sacramento de Reconciliacion

First Holy Communion Readiness Requirements

1. The child must truly desire to receive Holy Communion.

2. The child should be able to distinguish between the Eucharist and ordinary bread. A good way to put it to the child is:

First Holy Communion Celebration

How can I help my child prepare for First Communion?Tonight you are given many resources to help your child prepare for this sacrament. Attending Mass weekly as a family is the best way for your child to understand the importance of and to be familiar with the sacrament. . You don’t have to become a professional teacher, priest, theologian or expert. You are being asked to share your ideas, feelings and your faith about something that your child is about to do for the first time. The most important things parents can do is to deepen your own appreciation for the Eucharist and get to know and love Jesus Christ better

What Is the Parent’s Responsibility in First Communion Preparation?Mothers and fathers have the primary responsibility for preparing their child for First Communion. They also have the right to do so. This involves deciding when they feel their child is ready for First Communion. It also means helping the child to learn the essentials and acquire a desire for the Eucharist. Although it is the right and responsibility of the parents they are not alone; the parish priests, catechists, Religious Education program staff and other parents who are also preparing children for First Holy Communion can and should all work together during this time of preparation.

Does my child need a Godparent to be present for First Communion?Godparents are welcome to be present with families for the First Communion liturgy but there is no role for Godparents during the Mass. The children will be receiving First Communion by themselves. We do not need the names of your child’s Godparents.

What should my child wear to the First Communion celebration?A child should be dressed in his or her “Sunday best.” Care should be taken to help children realize that what they wear is not the most important aspect of the celebration. The focus of First Communion should be the child’s participation in the Mass. The children will not be allowed to wear gloves or carry rosaries, prayer books or other religious articles during the liturgy. We will ask parents to please hold on to these items during the liturgy. There will be opportunities for the priest to bless these items after the mass.

Where will the children receiving First Communion be seated in the church during the Mass?The First Communicants will be sitting with their classes at the front of the church. To avoid distractions and preserve the solemnity of the occasion, NO PHOTOGRAPHY will be allowed at any point during the Mass.

Will there be a photographer?We will have a photographer present for each mass who will capture the image of each child receiving the sacrament of the Eucharist for the first time, as well as moments throughout the liturgy. The images will be put onto a website {www.patmccord.com} to which you will be given access. To prevent distractions and preserve the solemnity of the occasion, we ask that, NO PERSONAL PHOTOGRAPHY OR VIDEO will be allowed at any point during the Mass. There will be opportunities for individual pictures after the mass.

Cómo puedo preparar a mi hijo (a) para la Primera Comunión?En el paquete de Información que Usted recibirá vienen incluidos muchos recursos para que Usted prepare a sus hijos para éste sacramento. Por favor utilice con estos librillos y haga las actividades en casa para que sus hijos comprendan y estén preparados adecuadamente para la recepción del Sacramento de Reconciliación y la Eucaristía. El acudir a Misa como familia es la mejor manera de enseñarle a su hijo (a) la importancia de dicho Sacramento.

Que Caracteriza La Preparación Para La Primera Comunión En Casa?Lo mas importante es que los alumnos acudan a Misa semanalmente en conjunto con sus padres, para así poder apreciar de manera mas profunda la Eucaristía y además poder conocer y amar mas a Jesucristo.

Es importante actuar de manera natural al educar a nuestros hijos. No es necesario que los padres transformen su casa en una capilla. No es necesario que usted se transforme en un maestro profesional, en sacerdote teólogo o en un experto para educar a sus hijos. Nosotros le pedimos que por favor comparta sus ideas, sentimientos y Fe en relación a algo que su hijo realizara por primera vez. Es importante que Usted también disfrute este proceso. Tanto los padres como los hijos deben disfrutar estar juntos al compartir los alimentoso, ver fotografías, leer poesía, contar historias, hacer proyectos y hablar sobre la vida, Iglesia y la Eucaristía.

Cuál Es La Responsabilidad De Los Padres Para Preparar A Sus Hijos Para La Primera Comunión?Tanto la madre como el padre tienen la principal responsabilidad de preparar a sus hijos para la Primera Comunión. También tienen el derecho de hacerlo. Esta responsabilidad incluye el decidir si sus hijos están listos para recibir la Primera Comunión o no. También significa que debemos ayudar a nuestros hijos para que aprendan y adquieran el deseo de saber más acerca de la Eucaristía. Es importante que sepan sin embargo que Ustedes como padres de familia no están solos en esta travesía. Los sacerdotes, catequistas, el programa de Catecismo y otros padres de familia pueden ayudar en la preparación de sus hijos para la Primera Comunión y pueden trabajar en conjunto para dicha preparación.

No se permitirá que los niños (a) utilicen guantes para recibir el Sacramento. Dónde se van a sentar los niños (a) que van a recibir la Primera Comunión durante la Misa?Los alumnos se sentaran con sus compañeros de curso en las primeras filas en la Iglesia. Para evitar distracciones le rogamos de la manera más atenta que Usted no se levante y camine TOMANDO FOTOGRAFÍAS en el transcurso de la Misa.

Habrá un fotógrafo?Si habrá un fotógrafo presente durante la Misa de Primera Comunión. El tomará fotografías de su hijo (a) en el momento que reciba la Eucaristía por primera vez, así como FOTOGRAFÍAS en el transcurso de la celebración. Usted podrá tener acceso a dichas imágenes por medio de la red a la cual Usted tendrá acceso.Para evitar las distracciones le rogamos de la manera más atenta que Usted permanezca sentado durante la Misa. Habrá oportunidades para los cuadros individuales después de la misa.

WAYS TO HELP YOUR CHILD PREPARE FOR FIRST COMMUNION- by Bert Ghezzi

You can help your child understand and appreciate the Eucharist if you relate it to their life. Familiar ordinary realities that kids already value can be conversation starters for exploring the meaning of the Eucharist.

Spiritual Food. One of children’s main interests in life is food. So, food is a natural starter for conversations about the Eucharist since it is a ritual meal. Here are some ways food can help you talk to your child.

The Eucharist is a meal. On the table of the altar, Jesus feeds us with His Body and Blood, under the appearances of bread and wine.

Just as food nourished our bodies, the Eucharist is spiritual food that nourishes our soul.

Real Presence. Friends are a high priority to your kids. Your child’s experience of friendship can be a launch pad for talking about the Eucharist, the sacrament in which Christ is present to us and shares His life with us. Some possible lines for conversation are:

“Jesus called us friends (see Jn 15:15) and in the Eucharist He made it possible for us to be with Him.” “Jesus is really present in the Eucharist under the form of bread and wine.” “When we celebrate the Eucharist and spend time in Jesus’ presence, our love for him grows.”

Sacrifice. Christ’s sacrifice on the cross was the offering of His Body and Blood to the Father as gifts for the salvation of the world. In the Eucharist, we offer the Father this gift of Jesus. It is the greatest gift we can give the Father, and we receive abundant blessings because of this. You can use the concept of gift-giving to help your child understand the sacrificial element of the Eucharist. Here are some points to make:

We give gifts as a sign of giving ourselves to people we love. Friends like to share our gifts with them as a way of uniting themselves to us in love. In the Mass, we

give bread and wine to God as signs of giving ourselves to Him. God unites our self-giving with the bread and wine. Through the action of the priest, the Holy Spirit transforms the bread and wine into the Body and Blood of Christ. This act makes present the sacrifice of Jesus Christ and its divine powers of salvation for us. When we receive Communion, we are united with Jesus and transformed by his saving power into Him. When we eat ordinary bread we change the bread into ourselves. When we eat Christ’s Eucharistic Bread, He changes us into himself by giving us a deeper share in His divine life and love through grace. God accepts our gifts and changes them by uniting them with himself.

Celebration. We have parties to celebrate events and anniversaries, and Eucharist is a celebration of the most important event ever. You may find the following themes helpful:

At parties, we celebrate with special foods and drinks, and we do things like sing and dance to express how we feel.

The Eucharist is a celebration. We gather with Mends to remember the death and resurrection of Jesus. The Eucharist is a thanksgiving celebration for what God has done for us in Christ.

Así bien, la comida puede ser una buena manera de iniciar una conversación en relación a la Eucaristía, ya que se trata de una comida ritual. Aquí le presentamos algunas maneras en que Usted puede iniciar conversaciones a través de la comida

La Eucaristía es una comida. En la mesa del altar, Jesús nos da de comer su Cuerpo y Sangre, bajo la apariencia del pan y del vino.

Así como la comida nutre nuestro cuerpo, la Eucaristía es el alimento espiritual que nutre nuestra alma.

Presencia Real Los amigos juegan un papel muy importante en la vida de sus hijos. Las amistades de sus hijos pueden ser el trampolín para hablar sobre la Eucaristía, el sacramento en el cual Cristo está presente con nosotros y comparte su vida con nosotros.
