Let’s Talk Leadership!

Leadership is a key ingredient in 4-H. Club Officers participated in an evening training engaged in

activities related to parliamentary procedure, office duties, PMA (Positive Mental Attitude), round

table discussions, ice breakers, and learned other ways to be involved in leadership opportunities

within 4-H.

There are many leadership opportunities that await you this year such as Unit 22 Teen

Adventures: Get Lost in Leadership, Speak for Illinois 4-H, 4-H Citizen Scientist, Illini

Summer Academies, and summer camps….stay tuned!

Saturday, May 17th, 2014 at 1:15pm. The Cardinals will be playing the Braves,

and the ticket prices will be $25.00 each. With each ticket purchase you will re-

ceive a T-Shirt and an opportunity to participate in a 4-H parade that will take

place on the baseball field before the game! Ticket order forms are on the Unit

28th Annual Southern Illinois Sheep and Craft Festival

The Monroe County Sheep Producers are again putting on the annual event on April 12, 2014. There will be sessions by sheep specialists, judging con-

tests, spinning and craft demos, shearing demos, sheep Olympics and a number of fun filled activities.

I M P O R T A N T Rabbit Exhibitors are now required to take the QAEC training, but, if they al-

ready took the training in another species, then their requirement is met.

Deadline for this training for all livestock projects is May 1st! This is a one-time

training. If you are unsure if you have met this requirement, please contact your 4-H

Program Coordinator.

SHOOTING SPORTS

The Illinois 4-H Shooting Sports is the fastest growing group in Illinois 4-H. Adults helping with shoot-

ing sports clubs must be certified through the University of Illinois’ Shooting Sports Training Program.

Adults must attend 15-18 hours of training conducted by National 4-H Shooting Sports instructors

The next training will be held September 27-29 at 4-H Camp in Monticello, IL.

If you know of someone who would be interested, please have them

contact the Extension Office.

BECOME A 4-H CITIZEN SCIENTIST

For Junior and Senior High School Students interested in environmental science opportunities

with hands-on research. This program is open to current 4-H members and volunteers, as well

as youth and adults who aren’t current members but wish to learn how to improve their local en-

vironment. There is no cost and materials are provided. Call the office for registration.

On May 8, 2014, the nation-wide Cooperative Extension system will celebrate 100 years of educational pro-

gramming to the people across America. Following are some challenged for 4-H clubs in each county to

consider:

Generate 100 new 4-H members.

Plant a tree in a community park or some community or county site.

Visit a state Legislator and report what 4-H has done for youth.

Interview 4-H Alumni.

Collect 100 cans of food for a local food pantry.

Be creative and consider your own ideas for the 100th Anniversary Recognition.

Clubs who get involved should showcase their activities through photos….send them our way and we will

post them.

ships, and where a degree in ACES may lead in the job market.

This program offers teens the opportunity to explore the University of Illinois campus and potential degree programs and careers. University faculty and staff plan interactive learning sessions to pro-vide delegates an overview of actual college classes required in various majors. Academies are open to ANY Illinois youth who is currently in 8th to 12th grade. They must be an incoming high school freshman to graduating senior this summer and must fall within the 14-18 age range as of September 1, 2014.

The Illinois State 4-H Youth Leadership Team has designed SFI4-H to train 4-H members in ad-

vanced public speaking skills and business etiquette to effectively promote the University of Illinois

Extension 4-H Youth Development Program. Current 4-H members ages 14-19 must have the ap-

proval of their Extension office in order to participate in this program.

We recently received a thank you from Woodford County 4-H families for the donations from all of

Scott Air Force Base 4-H Corner

Exploring Cultures through the Olympics

The Olympics are not only about the sport; it is about sportsmanship, trying your best and learning from others. For the last two weeks, the Scott Air Force Base youth have been studying other na-tion’s cultures, tracking medal counts for their respective countries, and learning more about the Olympic spirit while participating in the 2014 Scott Air Force Base Youth Program Winter Olympics.

During the opening ceremonies, youth lead the parade of participants, shared information on history of the event, mascots, symbolism of the Olympic flag and conducted the official lighting of the Olym-pic torch. During the competition, sportsmanship was emphasized as well as teamwork. Partici-pants discussed ath-letes, different venues, and learned more about the individual events. Closing ceremonies highlighted individual and team accomplish-ments, a revue of the medal count from the individual events and the “passing of the torch” for the next Olympic game.

New Ideal 4-H club

The New Ideal club stays busy under the leadership of Carol Seibert. We started the year with a fall bonfire and most recently held our

yearly club dinner and dessert auction. In between we made napkin rings to be included with the Thanksgiving dinners delivered by the local churches, packaged food with other clubs, made rainbow loom bracelets, signed and delivered Christmas cards to the local nursing homes (we even sang a few carols while we were there) and many other pro-jects. Each month a member or two does a demonstration and we have plans to do paint-ing on plates and canvas and to do electricity and rocket projects.
