From the Pastor’s Desk...

It Is Easy . . . when you are a rapidly aging priest, it is easy to overlook Valentine’s Day. So that I am not accused of being a curmudgeon, I may well be one, I just don’t want to be accused, let me begin this column this week by wishing everyone a Happy Valentine’s Day this very Sunday. Even before I began aging, I was never “into” Valen-tine’s Day. My nieces, to whom

I have always been very close, will quickly tell you that Uncle Phil never even sent a Valentine’s Day card let alone anything else. If I were hoping to get my own chocolates, I might build up Valentine’s Day a bit more but, as hard as it may be to believe, for all of the sweet teeth that I do, in fact, have, chocolates were never high on my list. Now, Father Ryan will gladly accept any Valentine chocolates you might chose to give!! (He’s going to kill me for that!!) In the end, whether it be Valentine hearts, Valentine chocolates, Valentine flowers, or just a greeting, I take this mo-ment to wish you and your Valentines a Happy Valen-tine’s Day! Coming quickly on the heels of Valentine’s Day, this coming Wednesday, February 17, 2021, is Ash Wednesday, about as far from Valentine’s Day as you can get. Out of respect for everyone’s safety during the pandemic, we are attempting to spread out our services for those who desire to receive blessed ash-es on this Ash Wednesday. We will have Masses at 7:00 a.m., 8:30 a.m., (the school will not be attending this Mass) and 7:00 p.m. Additionally, we will have three prayer services specifically for the distribution of ashes. The first prayer service will be at 11:00 a.m., then one at 12:00-noon, and one at 4:00 p.m. These services will not include the distribution of communion and they will certainly be much shorter than the full Ash Wednesday Masses. So there will be two Mass-es in the morning, two services around midday and then one service in the afternoon and conclude with Mass in the evening. The hope is that everyone who wishes to attend will chose different times so that we can get everyone in safely. Please remember that all of those attending either Mass or prayer service on Ash Wednesday is expected to follow the state man-date regarding face masks and also to be attentive to

social distancing during the Mass or the service. The other “big” change this Ash Wednesday is the manner in which ashes will be distributed. There will not be any marking of the forehead in the sign of the cross with ashes. We have been directed by the Vatican, as well as the Diocese of Youngstown, to forego the traditional manner for the distribution of ashes in this pandemic year. Instead, we will adopt what is the traditional method for the distribution of ashes in many of the countries of Europe. In the place of an ash cross on the forehead, ashes will be sprinkled on the crown of the head. One time, and one time only, the priest or the deacon will proclaim the traditional proc-lamation, either, “Repent and believe in the gospel” or “Remember thou are dust and unto dust thou shall return.” That will only be spoken once and then as you come forward individually, ashes will be sprinkled on the crown of your head, not of the forehead, but on top. There are, then, two changes in store this Wednesday, Ash Wednesday. First, we will have masses at 7:00 a.m., 8:30 a.m. (the school will not be present and this Mass will be live-streamed on the parish’s Facebook page) and 7:00 p.m. There will be prayer services with the distribution of ashes at 11:00 a.m., 12:00-noon and 4:00 p.m. Secondly, when it comes time for the distribution of ashes, there will be but a single proclamation and individuals will receive ashes on the top of their head not on their forehead. It will certainly prove to be an interesting Ash Wednesday, I am sure so, please, be prepared for the changes for Ash Wednesday, 2021. Following up on Ash Wednesday will be the cele-bration of the Sacrament of Confirmation on Saturday, February 20, 2021. I mentioned in my column earlier and it has been repeated to the confirmation families by letter that Bishop Bonnar will not be coming for the celebration of Confirmation and that I have been dele-gated to perform the sacrament this year, not a job I mind doing, but I, first and foremost, would have pre-ferred that the Bishop be doing it. It was not to be. Because of the size of the classes and the limitations of social distancing, the confirmation candidate, the sponsor, and the parents are the only people invited to attend the Masses for Confirmation. Once again, not something I enjoy at all, but we must keep every-one as safe as possible. Thank you for your understanding… Congratulations to Tia Reese Armburger to her parents and godparents on the occasion of her bap-tism here at Saint Charles Borromeo this past week-end. Best wishes to all involved...

ONE EXTRA MASS A MONTH CLUB PRAYER FOR VOCATIONS

Jesus, our good shepherd, bless all our parishes with numerous priests, deacons, men and women in religious life, conse-crated laity and missionaries, according to the needs of the entire world, which you love and wish to save. Assist our pastors and all who live a consecrated life. Guide

the steps of those who have responded generously to your call and are preparing to receive Holy Orders or to pro-fess vows. Look with love on young people and call them to follow you. Help them to understand that in you alone can they attain complete fulfillment. To this end we call on the powerful intercession of Mary, mother and model of all vocations. We beseech you to sustain our faith that the Father will grant what you have commanded us to ask. Amen. The “One Extra Mass A Month Club” is a program sponsored by Youngstown Vocations Support Society. Members attend mass one extra day of the month to pray for an increase in ministerial vocations. If you would like to join other St. Charles parishioners who are currently praying for vocations, please contact Rosey Wilson at [email protected] or 330-726-9320 with the date that you choose to pray for this intention.

Can you pull it close and feel its comfort? You can if it comes as a gift in the form of a Prayer Shawl. Prayer Shawls are simple gifts of grace from God that are prayerfully

and lovingly stitched by volunteers of St. Charles Grace-ful Hands and prayed over as a reminder that God’s promise is always with us. Shawls can be useful for:

those undergoing medical procedures; as a comfort after a loss or in times of stress; during bereavement; or for

prayer or meditation. Prayer Shawls are available to an-yone free of charge. Please call the parish office to re-

STEWARDSHIP OUR TIME, OUR TALENT, & OUR TREASURE

Stewardship Thought of the Week: “Brothers and sisters, whether you eat or drink, or whatev-

er you do, do everything for the glory of God.” - 1 Corinthians 10:31

Do a quick check of your priorities. Where does God rank in that list? If He’s not first, you have some work to do. Putting God first in everything helps us from putting oth-er “gods” (like our pride, ego, money and possessions) before God. Before making a decision, ask yourself, “I’m I going this for the glory of God or for the glory of me?”

COVID-19 Mass Guidelines • Entering the Church – Everyone is expected to wear a

mask. There is no holy water for blessing as you enter. On the round table in the Gathering Space, there are bulle-tins that will also serve as worship aids for the Mass. Please pick up a bulletin on your way into Mass and then take it home with you. We are asking everyone to re-member to carry their bulletin out to their car with them. There will be wicker baskets on your way into the church itself for your offertory donation. Families may sit together, but there should be six feet between all others. If you move a chair in either the Saint Charles room or the Daily Mass Chapel in order to sit with a family member, please move it back as you leave.

• No Sign of Peace - There is no collection nor is there any offertory procession. There is no sign of peace.

• Communion – The priest and the Eucharistic ministers will receive communion. After they receive, the altar will be cleared and we will have the communion prayer and the final blessing. At that point, the priest and the Eucharistic ministers will put their masks on, purify their hands and come down and begin the distribution of communion. Please use the gold markers on the floor to maintain dis-tance. When you come forward, extend your arms, place one hand under the other, receiving the host, step away, move your mask, and take communion. You will then leave the church. If you are not coming forward to receive communion, when your row moves, please leave the church at that time. Anyone wishing to return to his or her seat for private prayer please be sure that the row is empty before reentering. If you are unable to come forward to receive communion, please sit in the Daily Mass Chapel and after everyone else has received, the Eucharistic minister will bring you communion.

Lord Jesus Christ, Only Be-go en Son, Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us; you take away the sins of the world, receive our prayer; you are seated at the right hand of the Father, have mercy on us. For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen. A reading from the Book of Levi cus (Lv 13:1-2, 44-46) The Lord said to Moses and Aaron, “If someone has on his skin a scab or pustule or blotch which appears to be the sore of leprosy, he shall be

Worship Aid brought to Aaron, the priest, or to one of the priests among his descendants. If the man is lep-rous and unclean, the priest shall declare him un-clean by reason of the sore on his head. “The one who bears the sore of leprosy shall keep his garments rent and his head bare, and shall muffle his beard; he shall cry out, ‘Unclean, un-clean!’ As long as the sore is on him he shall de-clare himself unclean, since he is in fact unclean. He shall dwell apart, making his abode outside the camp.” The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Responsorial Psalm (Sung) A reading from first Le er of Saint Paul to the Corinthians (1 Cor 10:31-11:1) Brothers and sisters, Whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do everything for the glory of God. Avoid giving offense, whether to the Jews or Greeks or the church of God, just as I try to please everyone in every way, not seeking my own benefit but that of the many, that they may be saved. Be imitators of me, as I am of Christ. The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

Gospel Acclama on (Sung) Gospel (Mk 1:40-45) The Lord be with you. And with your spirit. A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Mark. Glory to you, O Lord. A leper came to Jesus and kneeling down begged him and said, “If you wish, you can make me clean.” Moved with pity, he stretched out his hand, touched him, and said to him, “I do will it. Be made clean.” The leprosy le him immediately, and he was made clean. Then, warning the him sternly, he dismissed him at once. He said to him, “See that you tell no one any-thing, but go, show yourself to the priest and offer for your cleansing what Moses prescribed; that will be proof for them.” The man went away and began to publicize the

whole ma er. He spread the report abroad so that it was impossible for Jesus to enter a town openly. He remained outside in deserted places, and peo-ple kept coming to him from everywhere. The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ Profession of Faith (The Nicene Creed) I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Be-go en Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, bego en, not made, consubstan-

al with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salva on he came down from heaven, and by the Holy Spirit was in-carnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pon us Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scrip-tures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen. Presenta on and Prepara on of the Gi s Priest: Blessed are you, Lord God of all crea on...it will become for us the bread of life. Congrega on: Blessed be God for ever. Priest: Blessed are you, Lord God of all crea on...it will become our spiritual drink. Congrega on: Blessed be God for ever.
