The Acts of the Apostles speaks repeatedly of the early Church being dedicated to prayer (Acts 1:14, 2:42, 6:4). Pope St. John Paul II said that parishes should be “schools of prayer.”
Prayer together should be a fundamental part of our parish life. This obviously includes liturgical prayer, especially the Mass, which is the greatest prayer. But we should also gather for prayer outside of formal liturgy. Prayer should be a defi ning characteristic of our parish.
At the moment, it is diffi cult for us to gather as a large group in person to pray. But thanks to technology we can still pray together. This is why we have begun our weekly Virtual Prayer Meetings every Wednesday at 8 a.m. We will be using Zoom for this.
The prayer meetings will follow a very simple schedule. Each week, there will be a theme. Jesus tells us that if just two people agree on what to pray for, it shall be done for us by our Father in Heaven. This theme will give us a focus to unite our prayers.
We will begin with a Scripture reading, usually a Psalm. The Book of Psalms is a collection of prayers that cover a wide range of topics and human experiences. Because they are part of Scripture, they are God’s Word to us. And because they are prayers, they are our words to Him.
After the Scripture reading, there will be a time of quiet prayer. We should remember that prayer is a conversation with God, not a monologue. St. Paul reminds us that we do not know how to pray as we ought, but the Holy Spirit intercedes for us. Before we speak in prayer, we should begin by listening to the Holy Spirit as He guides and directs our prayer.
After the silence, there will be time for prayer out loud. Anyone who feels inspired by the Holy Spirit will be invited to pray for what our theme is. As Catholics, we often are unfamiliar with praying with each other in our own words. We often rely on pre-written prayers, or we relegate leading prayer to clergy. But all of us can and should be able to pray together. The only way to become more comfortable praying with other people is by doing it.
After this time of prayer for the theme, we will then have a time for any special prayer intentions. It is my hope that this weekly time of prayer will help us grow as a parish, both in our relationship with the Lord and our communion with one another.
To join the virtual prayer meeting, go to www.bit.ly/scbprayermeeting

Today’s Gospel directlyfollows last week’s
account of Jesus feeding a crowd of more than 5,000 people with just fi ve loaves of bread and two fi sh. For the sake of the crowds, Jesus had postponed his time of solitude. Now, at last, Jesus fi nds some time for quiet and prayer. He sends his disciples ahead of him by boat, dismisses the crowds, and then withdraws to the mountain to pray.
The disciples do not fare well. They struggle to weather the wind and waves, making little progress in their journey. In Chapter 8 of Matthew’s Gospel, Jesus calms the seas. This time, however, Jesus does not calm the seas, and the disciples do not express fear until they see Jesus walking toward them on the water. In this story it is not the storm that is feared but the sight of Jesus before them, whom they mistake for a ghost.
Jesus calls to the disciples and calms their fears. He is not a ghost. The impulsive Peter seeks proof that the person is indeed Jesus. He asks Jesus to call him out onto the water, and Jesus grants this request. Peter’s fear and doubt overtake him, however, once he is walking on the water. Jesus reaches out to Peter and saves him. When Jesus and
Peter enter the boat, Matthew reports that the wind ceases, and the disciples confess that Jesus is the Son of God.
Faith in Jesus will enable the disciples to do the work that Jesus has done. Peter walks on water. The fi ve loaves and two fi sh feed a multitude of people. The disciples can and will participate in the work of the kingdom of heaven. When Peter fears and doubts the person of Jesus, however, he falters. Peter’s example teaches us that true Christian ministry emerges from the faith that Jesus is the Messiah, God’s only Son.
