REFLECTIONS / STEWARDSHIP PAGE 3 AUGUST 26, 2018

STEWARDSHIP . . .Thank you for supporting your parish, St. Catherine of Alexandria!

Brothers and Sisters,

On this 21st Sunday in Ordinary Time it is me to take a stand. Just like the faithful in today’s first reading and the disciples in the gospel, we must decide if we really believe things that are beyond our human understanding. When we pray the Creed today, take note of all that we believe.

As I was preparing to write to you this week, I came across a short story about an old church that had been replaced by a new building. The only indica on of what the old church building had been was a faded and ta ered remnant of a wayside pulpit no ce with this message on it, “Choose God, Choose Life.” These four simple words-“Choose God, Choose Life”- are a summary of the Bible’s message. They are also a summary of the theme that runs through our readings today.

In our first reading Joshua calls the people together at Shechem and delivers a very moving speech. Joshua calls them to “choose today whom you wish to serve.” Was it to be the Lord God who brought them out of slavery in Egypt or the pagan Canaanite Gods? Joshua says to the people: “As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” The people reply: “We too will serve the Lord for he is our God.” They choose God, they choose life.

Our second reading can be problema cal, but it is important not to miss the analogy St. Paul is trying to make. Christ is to the church he says, as husbands are to be to their wives. Just as a man or a woman chooses a wife or a husband due to love, so did Christ choose and took us to himself.

The gospel too centers on choice. Last week Jesus spoke plainly about the Eucharist, ending with the words: “anyone who eats this bread will live forever.” This is too much for some of his followers. This is intolerable language they say. How could anyone accept it? Jesus agrees but he does not go back on what he’s said, not even when “many of his disciples le him.” He turns to the Twelve and asks, “Do you also want to leave?” He knows he could lose his closest friends over his teaching about Eucharist. Peter has a wonderful response: “Master, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.” They trust Jesus: They choose God; they choose eternal life.

Truth becomes in the deepest of friendships a dividing line. The path of truth becomes too narrow for company. We need the courage to walk alone. Our friendship with Jesus and others must be based on truth. Jesus did not nego ate or compromise the truth of his doctrine with those who were leaving him. There are truths in the teaching of Jesus that are non-nego able. One of the risks that we all run today is to want an a la carte Chris anity which allows us to pick and choose, a customized Jesus; a Jesus who fits in with our likes and dislikes; a Jesus whom we find comfortable and convenient.

As each one of us comes to communion, the priest or minister holds up the host and says: “The Body of Christ.” All we see and taste is a wafer of bread and yet as we look at the host we say, “Amen.” A ny word, yet so full of meaning. It is our “yes”, our “I do believe”, our act of faith. We believe this is the body of Christ. The Eucharist is above all the sacrament of faith; it is our total commitment to Jesus. We are making a decisive choice: we choose God, we choose life.

What are we doing as Christians to help touch the lives of young people and adults who are serving time in facilities near our parish and who will be eventually returning to our neighborhoods and churches? Pope Francis has challenged us directly to minis-ter to the incarcerated and has led by example. Currently we have a need for Catholic Volunteers to help facilitate Liturgies of the Word and/or faith sharing groups at the Riverside Juvenile Hall and at the Robert Presley Detention Center in downtown Riverside. Men and women interested in volunteering at the Juvenile Hall should contact Pam Lucero at (951) 784-7642, and men interested in volunteer-ing at the County Jail should contact Bob Ferrett at (951) 697-7733 and women should contact Virginia Coriddi at (714) 813-2802.

NO TE VAYAS

Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.
