2 St. Brigid Church 5th Sunday of Easter 05-22-2011 Did you know? Remember bringing others to Christ, makes us witnesses of Christ, messengers for Christ, instruments of Christ, connectors to Christ. Ultimately though, we want those “others” we bring to Christ to have a genuine encounter with Christ just as we do. It is so beautiful to appreciate the many rich symbols of our Catholic heritage as we did during the Lenten Season, beginning with the Ashes, Friday Fish Fry, Stations of the Cross (he paid price with His Love for us), Lenten folders, no Alleluia, and no Gloria as we sought to do penance for ourselves and for our fellow Christians. Palm Sunday reminds us of our betrayals of love. We have Blessed Holy Oils for use in the Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, Holy Orders and Anointing of the Sick. The Washing of the Feet, the Triduum itself, the nailing and reverencing of the Cross, the Easter Fire, Pascal Candle, Easter lilies, Easter water to bless our homes and so much more; these symbols and symbolic actions all point to connecting us in relationship to Christ and one another. They aren’t just things, and certainly not idols we worship. So having encountered Christ ourselves during this Lenten Season, appreciating God’s many gifts to us, knowing what Christ expects of us, this is the day the Lord has made to provide the opportunities for those we know to come with us and encounter Christ. Knowing who and whose we are and knowing what we are supposed to do in church when visitors do come, and knowing who we are to reach out to and bring to others to encounter Christ, we have 50 days of Easter Season Opportunity to “just do it”! As Resurrection People with Alleluia as our song, let us go forth and unleash the power of God’s Grace. CHILD PROTECTION INFORMATION & FINGERPRINTING Did you know? Know the ‘Parent Warning Codes’ Text messaging is an increasingly integral part of the way young people communicate with their friends. But like other forms of communication, it can expose children to outside threats and unwanted contacts, even from sexual predators. That’s why it is important for parents to monitor their child’s use of text messaging. Young people are aware of their parents’ supervision and have developed text codes in response. These parent warning codes are codes that kids use to let whomever they are talking to know that it is not safe to talk. If you see these codes, you should instantly be suspicious. For example, “MOS” means “Mom over shoulder,” and “PIR” means “Parent in room.” A helpful tutorial for parents is located at www.mahalo.com. Type: “How to understand your kids’ text messages” in the search box. For particular help, you may call Assistance Ministry at (213) 637-7650.

8 St. Brigid Church 5th Sunday of Easter 05-22-2011

From the Pastor’s Desk May 22nd, 2011

5th Sunday of Easter “Making the Most of the Resurrection, Bringing Others to Jesus Christ”

Word of God- Jesus is the Way, the Truth and the Life, but more importantly, Jesus wants us to not only know the voice and person of the Good Shepherd, but also the Father. Jesus has moved us from believing, to following, to hearing His voice, to belonging to Him and to His flock and that’s us. Today Jesus wants us to know the Father, and next week to know the Paraclete, the Holy Spirit. Jump ahead to John 17 and read about Jesus praying for complete intimacy. Read Psalm 139 and get in touch with the right hand of the Lord holding you fast. And what is the result or reward of intimacy with the Lord? Wow the power of God’s mercy, grace, gifts, talents unleashed! It is a sustaining blast of strength to overcome the struggles of our life! It is mission and ministry of Jesus made manifest in us the people of God! Jesus becomes believable and the world is transformed! We possess the peace that only God can give! It is the fullness of joy that Jesus wants us to have! What keeps us from this wonderful intimacy? Well if Jesus is the car driver and never moves, and we are the passenger, well you know the rest of the story. Let’s move closer to the Lord.

Don’t forget!! Did you save the Date? Friday Evening, June 10th Memorial Mass for Fr. Paul Banet SSJ at St. Brigid Sunday June 12th Pentecost and celebrating our Neighbor to Neighbor Program at Lewis Metropolitan CME Church. Oh and don’t forget we wear Red that day! Vacation Bible School is just around the corner! July 16th our Parish Picnic! We had such fun last year at Hahn Park. We have the same spot this year and the committee is at work preparing. We look to see you there for more fun.

++++++++++++++++++++++++

St. Brigid connects to the larger African American Catholic Church and helps to give Voice and Visibility to the Archdiocese

During this Easter Season it is important that we don’t just focus in on ourselves and St. Brigid Parish. Gratefully we had more than a dozen participants in the AACCFE/Archdiocesan Liturgical Ministries Day with an awareness of the upcoming changes in Mass Language effective Advent 2011. Folks learned so much that they are considering participating in the AACCFE/LMU African American Studies Program that takes place on a couple of Saturdays a month(Darlene Harness and Denise Robinson are participating in that program this year). Did you know that Andrew Knox is the Chairperson of the Parish Reps for the AACCFE and our representative on the African American Catholic Advisory Board to our regional Bishop Edward Clark? Did you know that Babette DeLay is a member of the Our Lady of the Angels Regional Council? Did you know that Cheryl Pyles is President of the Our Lady of the Angels Region of the ACCW? Did you know that Floy Hawkins is a prominent speaker for the Archdiocesan Young Adult Program “Theology on Tap”! We would like to additional parishioners participate in these representative groups in our Deanery, Region, African American Catholic Center for Evangelization and the Archdiocese. It is a ministry of Voice and Visibility. It is a ministry of service that helps to build bridges. It is a ministry that promotes leadership development, an exchange of ideas, and evangelizes. Is God calling you to step forward and join in that effort? Contact the persons mentioned above or Fr. Frank to learn more about what they do involves.
