scoutinG thE BEarcatsLed by interim head coach and former Temple great Mark Macon, Binghamton sports a 1-1 record through two games. A rough offseason has limited the Bearcats to just three returning play-ers from last year's America East regular season and tournament championship team that finished with a school record 23 wins. Junior Greer Wright and Moussa Camara lead the team in scoring at 12 points and 11 points, respectively. Greer went for 15 points and 10 rebounds in a season-opening win over Bloomsburg, while Camara had a game-high 16 points in the victory. Sophomore center Kyrie Sutton had the best game of his young career on Tuesday at Pittsburgh, setting a career-high with 12 points.

vs. thE amErica EastSt. Bonaventure is 13-4 all-time against America East Conference foes since the league was formed in 1979 as the ECAC North. The Bonnies played four games against America East foes in 2007-08, going 2-2 with home wins over Binghamton and Albany.

man in thE miDDlEStanding 6-foot-9 with a 7-foot-6 wingspan, sophomore Andrew nicholson is center of attention for opposing teams. That has stopped the reigning Atlantic 10 Rookie of the year from getting off to a great start to his second season, as the Canadian big man leads the team at 21.5 points per game. Nich-olson is shooting a gaudy 72 percent (18-25) from the field and has shot below 50 percent just eight times in 32 career games. Nicholson poured in a game-high 26 points on 11-of-15 from the field against St. John's despite playing 28 minutes due to first half foul trouble.

aGainst thE BiG BoYsIn three career games against BCS Conference foes, sophomore Andrew nicholson has more than stood his ground. Most recently, Nicholson registered his fourth career 20-point game against St. John's. The Mississauga, Ontario product is averaging 18 points and eight rebounds while shooting 59 percent (23-39) from the floor over three games against Rutgers, Mississippi State and St. John's. oFFEnsivE EFFicEncYDespite only connecting on a trio of three-pointers through two games, St. Bonaventure has been extremely efficient on offense. The Bonnies have shot 50 percent or better in three of the four halves this season and are shooting at an impressive 59 percent clip (54-92) through two games. The easy buckets around the rim have led to a commanding 90-64 edge in points in the paint. St. Bonaventure has also passed out 31 assists to its 31 turnovers, led by senior chris MAtthews' eight helpers to just two turn-overs.

mr. novEmBErSenior JonAthAn hAll has made an immediate impact during his short time in the Brown and White, especially in the opening month of the season. Last season, Hall scored in double figures in the opening nine games, including all six games in November. Hall has continued his early season success with two more double figure games, including a game-high 20 points in the season opener, to bring his career eight-game November scoring aver-age to 15.9 points. Hall has also led the team in rebounding in both games this season.

homE cookinGWith last Friday's season-opening win over Cleveland State, St. Bonaventure's extended its home win streak to five games. The Bonnies closed last season on a four-game A-10 home win streak. Over the five-game win streak, the Bonnies have out-scored their opponents by over nine points per game and have shot over 50 percent in four of the five games for a cumulative 53 percent clip (136-259). Senior JonAthAn hAll is averaging 17 points and 8.4 re-bounds during the home win streak. Hall has a 30-point and 20-point effort during the run. Senior chris MAtthews (12.0) and sophomore Andrew nicholson (11.6) are also averaging double figure points during the win streak.

BonniEs Drop hEartBrEakEr to st. john's(box score & Full recap on Page 27)rochester, n.y. - After erasing a late seven-point deficit over the final three minutes, St. Bonaventure watched its lead evaporate with just six seconds re-maining as Malik Boothe sank a pair of free throws to send St. John's to a thrill-ing 69-68 win on Tuesday night at Blue Cross Arena. St. Bonaventure did get a good look in its final shot, but sophomore MichAel dAvenPort's three-pointer from the top of the key caromed off the back of the rim as the buzzer sounded. The back-and-forth game featured 10 lead changes and nine ties, as both team's enjoyed good nights on the offensive end. The Bonnies finished above the 50 percent plateau for the second straight game, connecting on 26-of-46 (57 percent) from the field. St. John's shot 54 percent (25-46), but made eight three-pointers to the Bonnies' one. St. Bonaventure's advantage came inside, as the Bonnies out-scored St. John's by a 44-30 margin in the paint. The major reason for that advantage down low was the play of Andrew nichol-son, who led all scorers with 26 points despite missing the final nine minutes of the first half due to foul trouble.

prEsEason honorsSophomore Andrew nicholson's Rookie of the year campaign in 2008-09 earned the respect of the A-10's head coach, as the 6-foot-9 forward was named to the preseason All-Conference second team and All-Defensive team. Nichol-son was the only player to be named to multiple teams and is just one of three underclassmen on the three preseason teams.

look out BElowArmed with more athleticism and depth, St. Bonaven-ture's eye-opening 77 percent shooting percentage in the first half in its win over Cleveland State was fueled by a plethora of dunks and layups. The easy buckets have led to 90 points in the paint so far. The Bonnies finished their season opener with six throw downs, led by sophomore Andrew nicholson's three dunks. Last season, Nicholson led the team with 37 dunks.

cincinnati kiDHead coach MArk schMidt has used a common theme to describe his freshmen at St. Bonaventure: "The best thing about freshmen is they become sophomores." After a fresh-man season in which he averaged 3.3 points and played spar-ingly, MichAel dAvenPort showed the truth to Schmidt's statement in the season opener. The Cincinnati, Ohio product began his second season in style, scoring a career-high 19 points off the bench on 7-of-10 from the field. Davenport fol-lowed with six points againt St. John's and is third on the team in scoring at 12.5 points per game.

BEnch pointsOne of the keys to St. Bonaventure success in 2008-09 was the play of its bench. The Bona reserves out-scored the opposing bench 23 times last season and picked up where they left off last Friday night by out-scoring the Cleveland State bench by a 25-9 margin. Sophomore MichAel dAvenPort led the way with 19 points in 28 minutes off the pine. The Bona bench supplied at least one double figure scorer in 17 games in 2008-09.

aGEnt zEroJunior oGo AdeGboye is the first player in program history to wear #0 this season. The 6-foot point guard comes to St. Bo-naventure from Lamar Community College in Colorado where he led the Runnin' Lopes to a 27-11 record, the program's first-ever Region IX Championship and first-ever appearance at the NJCAA Division I Tournament. Through two games, Adegboye is averaging 6.5 points, 3.0 boards and is 8-of-10 from the free throw line.

southpaw cEntralOut of St. Bonaventure's 12 scholarship players eligible to play this season, six of them are left-handed. Four of them come from the guard position (Adegboye, Davenport, Eleby, Leon-ard), while redshirt sophomore Da'Quan Cook and freshman Brett Roseboro give the Bonnies options on the left block.

2009-10 Bonnies Trends

Bti classicFollowing Friday's game, St. Bonaventure will have six days off from game action before it takes part in the BTI Classic hosted by Illinois State. The tournament guar-antees each team three games over a three-day span beginning on Nov. 27. The Bonnies will open play with back-to-back 9 P.M. ET contests against Southeast Mis-souri State (Nov. 27) and Norfolk State. The Brown and White's final game of the tournament will be against host Illinois State on Sunday, Nov. 29 at 4 p.m. at Redbird Arena.

an EYE For talEntOut of his first eight years as a head coach, MArk schMidt has landed three players who have gone on to win the conference Rookie of the year award in their respective leagues. Andrew nicholson became the second player in St. Bonaventure history to win the A-10 Rookie of the year award last season. Schmidt also recruited Tony Lee and Jeremy Chappell at Robert Morris who both won the NEC Rookie of the year award in 2003 and 2005, respectively.

swat tEam Led by freshman Andrew nicholson, St. Bonaventure unleashed a new ele-ment to its aggressive style of defense in 2008-09 ... blocked shots. The Bonnies' 144 blocks were more than double the amount of the previous season. Nicholson was the catalyst for the turnaround, swatting away 81 shots - good for third on the program's single-season list. Nicholson's 81 blocks led all freshmen nation-ally, while his 2.7 per game ranked second in the A-10 and 11th nationally. Nich-olson tied a program single-game record with eight rejections against Princeton, but broke that mark with nine blocked shots at Bucknell. Nicholson's nine blocks were the third-best single-game total in the NCAA in 2008-09. As a team, St. Bo-naventure finished third in the A-10 and 30th nationally at 4.8 blocks per game.

AhMAd sMith was the only player prior to Hall to accomplish the feat in program history in 2004-05, with totals of 14.2 points, 6.2 rebounds and 3.4 assists.

The 6-foot-9 forward from Mississauga, Ontario won a program record six Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week honors en route to being named the Rookie of the year in 2008-09. Nicholson averaged 12.5 points, 6.0 rebounds and 2.7 blocks per game. He led all A-10 Rookies in six different categories, ranking second overall in the A-10 in both blocks and field goal percentage. On the season, Nicholson scored in double figures 21 times, including a team-high three 20-point outings, and had three double-doubles. Nicholson also led the team in both scoring and rebounding 10 times, including both in the same game on five occasions. BomBs awaYSenior chris MAtthews made a living from beyond the arc in 2008-09. On Jan. 25, at Dayton, Matthews tied a school record with eight three-pointers en route to a career-high 28 points. The Washington, D.C. native's eight long range makes were the sixth of its kind in program history, while his 81 three-pointers were fourth in the single-season record books. Matthews made five or more threes in a game five times last season and his 81 trifectas were 58 more than the next highest Bonnie. Matthews' 3.06 trifectas per game in conference play ranked second amongst the league only leaders, while he ranked fourth in the A-10 overall at 2.7 long range field goals per game. Mat-thews accounted for 60 percent (81-of-135) of the team's three-pointers.

BoarD work After winning the battle on the glass just 12 times in 2007-08, the Brown and White responded by out-rebounding 22 of their 30 opponents in 2008-09 for a +3.7 margin on the glass. The increased effort came by committee as six dif-ferent players averaged 3.4 or more boards per game. St. Bonaventure was the only team in the A-10 to sport three players in the top 20 in rebounding. As a team, the Bonnies grabbed 10 or more offensive rebounds in 21 games, high-lighted by a season-best 24 against Canisius and 20 against UMass. The Brown and White posted their biggest rebound margins of the season at Duquesne, owning the glass by a 52-27 edge, and against UMass, 48-28. The Bonnies also had three players with over 50 offensive boards..

HEADCOACHMARKSCHMIDT

- st. BonavEnturE vs. BinGhamton (nov. 20)

Bio With his blue collar work ethic now installed in the program, third-year head coach Mark Schmidt will con-tinue his revival of St. Bonaventure basketball in 2009-10. Schmidt took over the tradition-rich program on April 10, 2007, becoming the 19th head coach in school history. In just two short years, Schmidt and the Bonnies have re-energized the Bona faithful and basketball-passionate Western New york community. In 2008-09, St. Bonaventure finished with a 15-15 overall record – the program’s best mark in the last six years. Included in that season was a program record seven consecutive road wins to start the season and the program’s first trip back to the Atlantic 10 Tournament since 2005. Team team’s seven true road wins also tied the record set by the 2001-02 club.

Key to the quick turnaround in 2008-09 was the team’s ability to buy into Schmidt’s emphasis on playing hard for 40 minutes. That philosophy paid big dividends, as the Bonnies out-rebounded 22 of their 30 opponents en route to ranking in the top five in the conference in all three major rebounding statistics. Also a direct result of Schmidt’s style of play was the team’s 70.8 points per game – the most by a Bonaventure team since 2002-03. During the 2008-09 season, freshman Andrew Nichol-son was named the A-10 Rookie of the year and a Fresh-man All-American by CollegeHoopsNet.com. Nicholson is the third player in Schmidt’s eight-year head coaching career to win a conference Rookie of the year accolade. Junior Jonathan Hall also flourished under Schmidt’s run-and-gun style, becoming the second player in program history to lead the team in points, rebounds and assists in the same season.

Additionally, Schmidt achieved a personal milestone of his own midway through the season, as he earned his 100th career win in the team’s 78-65 win at Fordham in the A-10 opener. Schmidt’s intense personality rubbed off on everyone involved with the program in his first season, including the senior class of Zarryon Fereti, Michael Lee and Tyler Relph who flourished under just one season of Schmidt’s guidance. All three posted career years on the court and experienced success of the court by graduating in May. Both Fereti and Lee worked their way into the profes-sional ranks overseas, while Relph finished as the NCAA leader in free throw percentage. Schmidt served as the head coach at Robert Morris for six seasons prior to coming to St. Bonaventure. There, he inherited a program that had managed just a 7-22 record in the season before his arrival. Schmidt quickly turned things around, leading the Colonials to the North-east Conference Tournament semifinals in 2004 and 2006. During his six seasons at RMU, he had an overall record of 82-90, including a 15-14 mark in 2005-06, the program's first winning season since 2000. Schmidt turned the Colo-nials into a year-in and year-out contender in the confer-ence, posting a 58-52 mark in league play highlighted by four seasons of 10 or more league wins. Schmidt coached six NEC All-Conference players at RMU, along with three All-Rookie team selections and one Conference Rookie of the year in Jeremy Chappell in 2006. Over the last two seasons, Schmidt saw his former recruit Tony Lee and Chappell garner back-to-back NEC Player of the year accolades in 2008 and 2009, respec-tively. Prior to Robert Morris, Schmidt spent seven seasons as an assistant coach at Xavier University under head coach Skip Prosser. Schmidt served as the program's top recruiter, landing future NBA players Torraye Braggs (Houston Rockets), Lionel Chalmers (Minnesota Timber-wolves), James Posey (Miami Heat), Romain Sato (San An-tonio Spurs) and David West (New Orleans Hornets). With most of his coaching responsibilities centered around the post players, Schmidt helped develop West into a three-time Atlantic 10 Player of the year and the National Player of the year in 2003. During his stay in Cincinnati, Ohio, Schmidt helped lead the Musketeers to four NCAA Tournament appear-ances and the National Invitational Tournament (NIT) twice. Xavier claimed its first-ever Atlantic 10 West Di-vision title in 1996-97 and both the West Division and

- st. BonavEnturE vs. BinGhamton (nov. 20)

tournament championships in 1997-98. In 1997, Xavier defeated Vanderbilt in the first round of the NCAA Tour-nament and finished the season with the school's highest Associated Press ranking at No. 13. The Musketeers made it to the NIT Final Four at Madison Square Garden in 1999, finishing third, the school's best finish since 1958. Schmidt served as an assistant under Prosser at Loy-ola College during the 1993-94 season. He helped guide the Greyhounds to the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Tournament title and the school's first-ever NCAA Tour-nament berth. From 1991-93, Schmidt was an assistant at Penn State University under Bruce Parkhill. The Nittany Lions went 21-8 in 1992 and appeared in the NIT. Schmidt's coaching career began with a two-year stint as an assistant at St. Michael's College in Vermont. Schmidt played four seasons at Boston College, where he received his bachelor's degree in business administration and management with a concentration in marketing. In his freshman season under head coach Tom Davis, the Eagles went 22-10 and made the NCAA Elite Eight. Schmidt played his final three years under the guidance of head coach Gary Williams. Boston College advanced to the NIT in 1984 and the NCAA Sweet Sixteen the other two years. A native of North Attleboro, Mass., Schmidt and his wife Anita have three sons, Nicholas (14), Derek (12) and Michael (9).

EXHIBITION GAMEST. BONAVENTURE 82Mansfield 74Nov. 6, 2009 at the Reilly Center

st. BonavEnturE, n.Y. - Behind a game-high 29 points and eight rebounds from sophomore forward Andrew nicholson (pictured), the St. Bonaventure men’s basketball team held off a feisty Mansfield club for a 82-74 wire-to-wire exhibition win on Friday evening at the Reilly Center. Nicholson finished 10-of-12 from the field, highlighted by four dunks, and went 9-of-10 from the free throw line. Senior JonAthAn hAll chipped in with 16 points and six assists as the team’s only other double figure scorer. The duo combined for 45 of the team’s 82 points. The problems on the defensive end and on the boards came thanks to Nicholson’s counterpart yuseff Carr, who was the story for Mansfield. The 6-foot-6, 286-lb. forward muscled his way to 19 points and a game-high 15 rebounds. For the game, St. Bonaventure shot a blistering 57 percent (27-47) from the floor and made 25-of-34 from the charity stripe. The Bonnies 21 assists came at the cost of 15 turnovers, but it was the 45 second half points allowed that troubled Schmidt. “It was a good first game for us and give Mansfield all the credit … they kept on working. I thought there were spurts where we looked good and there were times where we didn’t,” said head coach MArk schMidt. “In order to be successful we need to defend and rebound and that’s something we didn’t do well tonight.”

Game #1ST. BONAVENTURE 72Cleveland State 62Nov. 13, 2009 at the Reilly Center

st. BonavEnturE, n.Y. - St. Bonaventure jumped out to a 18-point halftime lead and never looked back as it cruised to a 72-62 season-opening win over defending Horizon League Tournament champ Cleveland State on Friday night at the Reilly Center. The opening 20 minutes looked like anything but the Brown and White’s first half of the season, as their 41-22 advantage at the half brought the crowd of 4,860 fans to their feet. St. Bonaventure was sharp on the offensive end, shooting an unheard-of 77 percent from the floor over the opening 20 minutes. “I thought we played a terrific first half and got out to a great start shooting 77 percent from the field,” said head coach MArk schMidt. “That was the best half of basketball from both an offensive and defensive standpoint that we’ve had in a long time.” The Bonnies received a trio of big performances, led by senior JonAthAn hAll’s game-high 20 points that came on 10-of-14 from the field to go along with a team-best eight rebounds. Sophomore Andrew nicholson contributed 17 points, including 14 in the first half, while adding seven boards and four blocks. The surprise game came from sophomore MichAel dAvenPort (pictured) who came off the bench and established a new career-high with 19 points on 7-of-10 from the field in 28 minutes of work. Led by Davenport, the Bona bench out-scored Cleveland State’s reserves by a 25-9 margin.

Game #2ST. BONAVENTURE 68St. John's 69Nov. 17, 2009 at Blue Cross Arena

rochEstEr, n.Y. - After erasing a late seven-point deficit over the final three minutes, St. Bonaventure watched its lead evaporate with just six seconds remaining as Malik Boothe sank a pair of free throws to send St. John's to a thrilling 69-68 win on Tuesday night at Blue Cross Arena. Sophomore Andrew nicholson (pictured) made good on his two free throw attempts with just 11 seconds to go, giving the Bonnies their first lead, 68-67, since the 18:05 mark early in the half. Boothe then broke the Brown and White's full court pressure and was fouled going to the rim resulting in the two free throws. The major reason for that advantage down low was the play of Nicholson, who led all scorers with 26 points despite missing the final nine minutes of the first half due to foul trouble. Nicholson finished 11-of-15 of the field and scored 17 points in the second half.
