REMINDER! Lenten Rules
Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are obligatory days of fasting and abstinence for Catholics. In addition, Fridays during Lent are obligatory days of abstinence.
The norms on fasting are obligatory from age 18 until age 59. Pregnant women and others for whom fasting would be perilous to their health are exempted. Those fasting are permitted to eat one full meal; two smaller meals may also be taken, but not to equal a full meal.
The norms concerning abstinence from meat are binding for all from age 14 onwards. Broths made from meat (as long as there are no pieces of meat in it) are permissible according to the letter of the law, though perhaps not fully coherent with its spirit. Vegetarians do well on days of abstinence to give up a certain food or dish that they regularly enjoy, since they already give up meat, not for penitential reasons, but as a way of life.
NEW! Saint Bernard Open House
St. Bernard Preparatory School in Cullman is a co-ed boarding and day school for grades 7-12. Operated since 1891 by the Benedictine monks of St. Bernard Abbey, it offers a Catholic college prep education in a beautiful and secure environment. For more info call 256-255-5890 or write to [email protected]. Open House: Friday, March 22, 2016, 9:00am.
NEW! Spring Ahead
Daylight Savings Time begins next weekend. Be sure to set your clocks forward one hour before going to bed on Saturday night!
NEW! Josh’s Ordination to the Diaconate
Seminarian Josh Altonji, whom we remember fondly from his service in our parish last summer, will be ordained to the diaconate on Saturday, May 28 during the 5:30pm Mass at Good Shepherd Parish in Huntsville. Father Jerabek is looking into options, such as renting a coach bus, so that a large group from St. Barnabas and Holy Rosary can more easily attend Josh’s ordination. Let’s also start thinking about a gift from the parish. If you have suggestions, please let Father know.
Spring 40 Days for Life Campaign
From February 10 to March 20 our community will take part in 40 Days for Life, an international, ecumenical pro-life campaign that aims to use prayer and fasting, peaceful vigil, and community outreach to help end abortion in our nation. The Birmingham campaign will take place daily at Planned Parenthood (1211 S. 27th Place, off Highland Ave), from 7:00am to 5:00pm. We heartily encourage all people of faith to take part in this campaign! For more information, for ways to help, and to register, please call 205-305-0950 or visit the web page, http://40daysforlife.com/ Birmingham.

CATHOLIC VOCABULARY
This Week’s Term: HOLY SEE
The term “Holy See” (also called the
“Apostolic See”) dates from ancient times
and refers to the Pope and his closest
collaborators; in other words, it refers to the
central governing structure of the Catholic
Church (Pope, Secretary of State, Roman
Curia). The Holy See is a subject (party) of
international law: it can enter into treaties,
accords, and other agreements and
relationships with nation-states and NGOs (non-governmental organizations). Thus the
Holy See has long been involved in
diplomatic activity, and the Church has its own academy to train church diplomats.
The highest diplomatic position outside the
Vatican is that of being an “Apostolic Nuncio”, the personal representative of the
Pope to the government of a nation; at
present, the Holy See has diplomatic
relations with approximately 175 nations. (Archbishop Joseph Marino, originally a
priest of our diocese, received his training at
the Pontifical Ecclesiastical Academy in
Rome and is now serving as Apostolic
Nuncio to East Timor in Southeast Asia.)
Ecclesiastical diplomats represent the
Church before sovereigns and governments
throughout the world in order to protect
and defend the rights of Catholics – and also
to promote values that are common to all
(or almost all), such as peace. Vatican City-
State is the sovereign territory of the Holy See and also has the distinction, at 109 acres
in land area (not counting parcels and buildings outside of it that have extra-
territorial status), of being the world’s smallest sovereign nation-state.
