MAY 2017The Journey of Faithby Dr. Jody Bowser, Senior Pastor

MESSENGEROur walk with God is a journey—a process. We must grow and

mature in our faith in the same way that we grow physically and emotionally. Stating this certainly doesn’t require a degree in rocket science. Common sense tells us this. Healthy things grow.

But growth isn’t a guarantee. How many of you have ever planted a seed—only to see it wither and die? Several years ago, my wife and I planted six blueberry bushes along the side of our house. We had high hopes for these bushes, imagining all of the ways that we would enjoy these home-grown treats. I’m sad to say this isn’t how it went. The plants got too much sunlight. They weren’t getting enough water. They needed covered with a net because the birds were getting to them. It was one issue after another. After several seasons, we had to come to terms with the fact that the only blueberries we would be eating were the ones that someone else grew!

Growth is a journey and this journey requires a plan. It’s true for growing blueberries and it’s true for growing in our faith. If we’re not intentional, it’s only a matter of time before our spiritual vitality begins to wither and become fruitless.

In this light, I want to suggest three ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS that

God will most certainly ask all of us: What did

you do with what I gave you?

we need to be asking ourselves (and others) to remain healthy, growing and producing good fruit—

• Question number one: Who are you worshiping?

• Question number two: Who is your com-munity?

• Question number three: Who are you serving?

It might be helpful to view these three ques-tions as mile-markers along the path of spiritual maturity. One leads to another…which leads to another.

The first question that we need to ask our-selves (and others!) is: Who am I worshiping? The answer to this question is much like the blue dot on your GPS—it’s telling you your current location.

Worship, you see, isn’t just something we do on Sunday morning for an hour. Worship is the sum total of every choice we make. The question isn’t WILL we worship - it’s WHO are we worshiping. I think of the old Bob Dylan song, “Gotta Serve Somebody.” He says:

“You’re gonna have to serve somebody. It may be the devil or it may be the Lord. But you’re gonna have to serve somebody.” Dylan was exactly right.

Take a minute right now and ask yourself this question: Am I living my life to honor and please God or am I living for myself? Think about the choices you made yesterday—or last night. Think about what you did last weekend. Were you worshiping God in those choices…or were you worshiping someone or some-thing else? WHY did you do what you did? Was God your top priority in those choices or was someone or something else? Who you’re worshiping tells you exactly where you are spir-itually…much like that blue dot on Google Maps.

The second key question is: Who is my community? And I’m not talking here about the people you enjoy getting together to play cards with on Friday night. I’m talking about your spiritual community. These are people

that you pray with, study the Bible with and talk about spiritual things with. These are people who can hold you accountable and ask you the hard questions.

It’s a proven fact that we need others in order to grow in our faith. I’ve mentioned in numerous sermons that the New Testament contains 39 distinct “One Another” commands. Let that sink in. There aren’t just five, or ten or twenty. There are MANY different ways that we need each other. Take another minute right now and ask yourself this essential question: Is my spiritual walk with God being nurtured by other Christians? And just as important: Am I nurturing someone else in their journey of faith?

Getting plugged in to a Sunday school class, or a small group isn’t just a good idea…it’s essential. I would even encourage you to take another step, and get involved in a Life Trans-formation Group (brochures are available in the church lobbies). Doing these things are as important as getting enough water on a blueberry bush!

And the third ESSENTIAL QUESTION we need to ask ourselves is: Who am I serving? Seriously. Make a list. I’m guessing family members and close friends probably top the list. But are there others? If the “worshiping” question tells you where you are right now, the “serving” question tells you where you’re going. Each and every one of us are created “for works of service.” God has uniquely gifted us so that we can share that gift with others. As you’ve heard in a few sermons lately, this question will be on the final exam. God will most certainly ask all of us: What did you do with what I gave you?

So where are you on the journey of faith? Use these questions as vital feedback. Be honest and make the appropriate steps to get on track if the answer reveals that you’re actually on the wrong path. Otherwise (and sadly!) you may get several seasons down the road and realize that instead of good fruit, there’s nothing but a dead plant.

Board of Administration Meeting Highlights

The Board of Administration met on Wednesday, April 12, 2017, in the Adminis-trative Office Conference Room. Chairman Steve Shadle called the meeting to order at 7 p.m. Ray Cullen opened the meeting with devotions and prayer. Following are highlights from this meeting:

Senior Pastor’s Report:Pastor Jody Bowser expressed that he is

looking forward to the upcoming Maundy Thursday service and Easter Sunday. He distrib-uted a 2017 preaching schedule for the upcom-ing Year of Transformation. Each month’s focus includes a variety of response opportunities for the congregation. Services will include an after-service response team being coordinated by the elders.

Executive Pastor’s Report:Pastor Don Baker announced that 12 people

were baptized in February and there will possi-bly be 10 or 11 baptisms on April 30. We will be recognizing 17 new church partners on April 23 and May 14. Child dedications will be happen-ing on June 18. After Pastor Don outlined the changes proposed to the Children & Youth Co-mission, the following motions were acted upon. The Children & Youth Co-mission will be dissolved. The Children’s Ministry Co-mission, chaired by Sue Washabaugh, will be formed. The Student Ministry Co-mission, chaired by Penny Poorman, will also be formed.

Elders’ Report: Adam Keath shared that the elders have

been working on creating church values and a missional map. The values will replace Connect, Grow, Serve, and Share. The newly adopted values are: Spiritually Alive in Jesus, Relationally Connected by Jesus and Missionally Engaged for

Jesus. The missional map questions coinciding with the values are: Who are you worshiping?, Who is your community? and Who are you serving? These are now officially adopted. Adam announced that there are two candidates for elder: Gary Piper and Dave Miller.

Co-mission Reports: • Adult Ministries – Andrea Adams shared

that there is a need for teachers and substitute teachers. Also, the co-mission is forming a draft for a Teacher Support Team to assist all teachers. The Priscilla Shirer simulcast was a big success.

• Children and Youth – Sue Washabaugh announced that the two new co-mis-sions, Children’s and Student Ministry, would be meeting for the first time in May.

• Finance – Ray Cullen shared that the vol-unteers that will be collecting offering on Easter Sunday are scheduled. The audit is finished and will be reviewed by the co-mis-sion before being presented to the board at the May meeting. Ken Adams reviewed the Financial Summary for March 2017.

• Local Outreach – Tom Knepper shared that the LOC is finalizing plans for Bless Week which will take place June 5–10. People from the congregation will have the opportunity to serve in a variety of ministry settings with partner ministries. Church-wide promotion will begin after Easter. There will be a block party at King Street Church on Saturday, June 10. Board members are invited to attend the LOC quarterly meeting on May 1 at 7 p.m. in M4.

• Missions – Scott Bert announced that Ron Cook shared about his recent trip to Jamaica. Brian and Emily Gerlach are finalizing their plans to return to Thailand. They will be working with the Family Connection Foun-dation and partnering with the Cool Shades of Life Church. The recent trip to Haiti was very productive. The church building there will be

finished by next year. The Mission Co-mission agreed to support Britton Hastings in his full-time position with the Fellowship of Chris-tian Athletes. Derek Lightner and Mackenzie Weaver were each approved to receive grants for their summer 2017 ministry positions.

• Personnel Relations – Aaron Smith distrib-uted a job description for a Children’s Ministry Administrative Assistant and descriptions for summer interns for the Children’s Ministry, Student Ministry and Creative Arts to take place from June to August. The board approved these positions.

• Property – Alex Rohrbaugh announced the purchase of two bike racks that will be installed outside the Rotz Foyer and the King Street Ministry Center. Plans are being made to make safety improvements to the sanctuary stage and the choir loft. Wooden railing will be installed beside the orchestra area. Doug Gayman will be altering signs to reflect the new 11:15 service time. The co-mission plans to assign addresses to each building owned by the church for emergency service purposes.

• Worship Arts – The co-mission spent time discussing their mission statement and goals to make sure that they coincide with the church’s mission statement and goals. Chuck Schussler asked that we keep the pastor and the worship teams in our prayers for the Easter services. The co-mission discussed how they could make tribute to the life and service of Bonnie Johns. The co-mission is getting closer to finalizing the lighting and media plans for the Baker Center.

Administrative Report:Ken Adams reported that there is a need

for another custodian because of the addition of new buildings to maintain. He announced the invitation by the county to a meeting on May 3 to discuss the possible changes to parking around the area.

Staff Spotlight: Ron Cook by Rose ZookMember of the Personnel Relations Co-mission

Ron Cook and his wife, Lois, have attended King Street since 2006. He accepted the position of Minister of Pastoral Care on January 2, 2017, upon Pastor Les’ retirement. Ron hails from

Pastor Ron CookFranklin County and was brought up attending Mt. Pleasant United Brethren Church, where he accepted Christ at the age of 10. He felt the call to full-time ministry when he was 19 and attended Huntington College where he met his future wife, who was from Michigan. Ron has three degrees: a BA from Huntington College, and a Bachelor of Divinity and Master of Divinity from Huntington College Theolog-

ical Seminary. He began his ministry career at Salem United

Brethren in 1967, and after several other pastor-ates and projects in between, returned to retire from Salem in 2007. I use the term “retired” loosely; after leaving the pastorate at Salem, he went on and served as interim pastor at four other UB churchs from 2008 – 2013. In addition to pastoring United Brethren churches, Ron has been involved in several church plants and developed and directed Marketplace Ministry in the tri-state area from 1995–2000.

Ron’s main responsibilities as Minister of Pastoral Care at King Street include visiting shut-ins and doing hospital visits. Along with assistance from Steve Flint, he also provides home communions. In addition Ron leads meetings and coordinates a group of church volunteers who also provide visitations to our home-bound members and to those in nursing homes, and collects monthly reports from those actively involved with King Street’s Shepherd Ministry.

He enjoys spending time conversing with people and getting to know as many people as he can. On January 21, 2017, Ron traveled to Jamaica with a team of volunteers from Salem UB Church; then on January 31st, he was joined by seven men from King Street. There were several projects that both teams worked to complete, including enlarging the kitchen area in a new dining hall/multipurpose building, and installing cabinets and hot water heaters in the current dorm. The completed projects exceeded what anyone expected could be accomplished. Ron was in Jamaica for three Sundays and while he was there, he preached at three Jamaican UB Churches. He describes his experience as “a very significant and exhilarating trip.”

Ron and Lois were married 55 years ago at Mt Pleasant and have three children: Heidi Dittman (married to Bill), Lisa Brookens (married to Randy), and Amy Bumbaugh (married to Chris), and four grandchildren—Ryan, Regan, Aaron and Jacob. In his spare time

6

he enjoys woodworking (furniture items), golf, bicycling and running.

Ron and Lois are active members of the Reflections Sunday School Class and he also serves as chaplain on Tuesday and Thursday mornings for David H. Martin Excavation and Brechbill & Helman Construction. If you are a caring and supportive person looking for ways to meet new people and care for those who can no longer regularly attend church, Ron is always on the look-out for more volunteers to help care for our flock.

Always!by Nancy FritzPrayer Ministry

I’m sure some of you remember the old love song, “Always.” I remember it well: Wayne Mowrey played it on the organ at our wedding 60 years ago.

I’ll be loving you ALWAYS With a love that’s true ALWAYSWhen the things you’ve planned Need a helping hand I will understand ALWAYS.Days may not be fair ALWAYS That’s when I’ll be there ALWAYS.Not for just an hour Not for a just a dayNot for just a year But ALWAYS.It’s a beautiful love song for husbands and

wives, and also applicable for Jesus and each one of His children.

Someone said, “God loves every one of His children as if He had just one child and He will ALWAYS love each one.” Let’s look at two more things Jesus ALWAYS practiced.

1. Jesus ALWAYS wanted the will of God His Father. He placed the phrase, “Thy Will Be Done,” in the first lines of the prayer He taught the disciples. (Matthew 6:10). Jesus prayed

before he was arrested: “Father, everything is possible for you. Take this cup from me. Yet, not what I will, but what You will” (Mark 14:36). Matthew states it this way: “My Father, if it is not possible for this cup to be taken away unless I drink it, may your will be done.” In John 8:29 Jesus said: “The one who sent me is with me; He has not left me alone, for I ALWAYS do what pleases Him.”

2. Jesus is ALWAYS interceding for us in prayer. At least three places tell us this: Romans 8:26 & 34 – The Spirit Himself inter-cedes for us with groans that words cannot express. He is at the right hand of God always interceding for us. I John 2:1,2 – If we sin we have one who speaks to the Father in our defense. Hebrews 7:25—He, Jesus, is able to save completely those who come to God through him because he always lives to intercede for them.

In its simplest form intercessory prayer is praying for others. Praying for ourselves is often referred to as petition.

How important is intercessory prayer? Author E.M. Bounds said, “Prayer can reach anywhere God can reach and prayer can do anything God can do, because the only power in prayer is the power of God.”

Ole Hallesby wrote, “It is our Lord’s will that we who have received access to these powers through prayer should go through this world transmitting heavenly power to every corner of the world which needs it sorely. Our lives should be quiet, but steadily flowing streams of blessing, which through our prayers and inter-cessions, should reach our whole environment.”

If we’re using Jesus as our pattern for living, intercessory prayer will become a permanent practice. Here’s a suggestion: during your quiet time with God, close your eyes and recite this sentence a number of times. Personalize it and allow a word picture to come to mind. “He, Jesus, always lives to intercede for me.” Describe and remember what you see. (This topic to be continued next month.)

Greetings to all Book Lovers! The warm weather we have been experiencing beckons me to sit outside, enjoy the sunshine, warm breezes and read a good book. How about you? This could be any number of activities – engaging in your daily

Bible readings and devotions from our being “Transformed” series, working on your home-work from your Sunday school class, your current Bible study or your small Life Trans-formation Group. It’s also a wonderful time to gather your children around and share or read a book to them. There are many books to choose from in our Children’s Library (located on the church’s upper level) and family devo-tional books located in the main library.

In addition to the many non-fiction and study related books, our library contains a great selection of fictional books that feature real-life Christian themes. Although the char-acters are fictional, the story line describes some real-life struggles and triumphs that can prove to be encouragement in your walk with Jesus. Check out the many books available at www.librarything.com. The user name is: kingstreetchurch and the password is: k1ng-str33t – both all lower case. (Note: the letter ‘e’ in street is represented by the number 3 and the ‘i’ in king is a number 1.) We will feature a book review in the June edition of the Messenger. Until then, Happy reading!!

ANNOUNCING: BLESS WEEK AND BLESS FESTThis year King Street Church is focusing on transformation, and one key facet is being

missionally engaged for Jesus. We are excited to announce that KSC is hosting Bless Week this summer to put local missions into action. Monday through Friday, June 5-9, you can serve our community through a variety of ministry partners. Each day there are morning and evening time slots, each with unique opportunities to love people in Chambersburg. We will have a website available the week of May 7, where you can explore each ministry, learn more about Bless Week, and sign up for a time slot. Just visit www.blessweek.com <http://www.blessweek.com> .

There’s more! We really don’t feel like Bless Week would be complete without a big party! So on Saturday, June 10, King Street Church is hosting a neighborhood celebration called Bless Fest. From 4-7 p.m., we will offer food, children’s games, a bounce house, dunk tank, carnival booths, prizes, music with our worship bands, and more. Maybe you have something to offer! Watch the worship folder for ways to contribute.

Personal Testimonies of the Elder Candidates

David C. Miller God blessed me with

Christian parents who were great role models of faith. They served as mis-sionaries in Argentina for 12 years, and were faith-fully involved in serving Christ in the local church all their lives. Because of

their influence and the working of the Holy Spirit, I prayed to commit myself to Jesus early in my life. At such a young age, my understand-ing was limited yet growing. As I matured, I began to recognize my sinful nature, and my need for Jesus’ forgiveness. When I reached the age of 11, I was baptized.

In my life I’ve experienced no other truth. Jesus is undeniable. I have felt His love and guidance over and over. I am thankful for His grace every day. When I stumble and fall, He draws me back to Him. While I know I am not perfect, He has always been there for me. He is always forgiving, always loving, always providing.

I strive to remain open and ready to serve and honor Jesus. The more I read His Word, the more compelled I am to love and serve Him. I want others to know Him more deeply so they can experience the fullness of life Christ has to offer.

Here at King Street, I’ve taught the Walk in the Word Sunday School class for 15 years. Recently, I completed a 6 year term serving as the chairman of the Local Outreach Com-mission. In addition, my wife, Erin and I have served with Welcome Ministries in the Baker Center for more than 12 years.

Personally, Erin and I have been married for 18 years and live in Fayetteville. We began attending King Street together shortly after our marriage, and have been members about 17 years. We have a daughter Jenna (16), and a son Michael (13).

Gary E. PiperThe church and Chris-

tianity have been part of my life for as long as I can remember. I grew up as a member of the United Methodist Church in Newville, PA and remem-ber my early years in the church that seem so long

ago. We had, what I remember to be, lots of sermons about hell, week-long revivals, rally days and lots of church wide meals. It was a small church and I was as active as you can be in a small church. I joined the church at age 12 and with this came a profession of faith.

I chose to live a dual existence through my college years and most of my 20’s with Sunday morning church, volunteering for church and secular charitable efforts but having behav-ior patterns through the rest of the week that didn’t reflect my Sunday morning profession. Although I was saved and professed my faith to the best of my understanding at an early age, three events transformed my Christian faith from childish (not childlike, actually childish) to an adult, abiding faith.

In 1988, while I was starting my career and frolicking in Charleston, SC, I received a call from Pennsylvania that my mother had taken her life. I fought God for nearly a year and quit my job, moved back in with my father and questioned whether God is a loving God. On a snowy night in January 1989, as I drove to my part time job, it hit me like a lightning bolt that God never left me or my mother and that God

19

wanted my life to be different, if only I trusted in Jesus’ sacrifice for me and that God loved me and wanted me to grow in my understanding of Him. It was the beginning of my adult faith and desire to grow closer to God through a personal relationship with Jesus.

In 1990, God directed my life to marry Suzanne, a woman who was already a mother and had the stability, faith and maturity that I needed to become a deeper Christian man. We have both commented on many occasions that our union was truly a God thing. It was the only time in our lives when we would have chosen each other instead of someone who was more “our type”. I also became a father to 10 year old Brooke, who was another gift for me from God to help me grow in patience, love and understanding. In the late 1990’s, I attended three Promise Keepers events that eventually led to involvement with men’s ministry groups and a commitment to a Godly household and spiritual leadership. It started a habit of couples’ devotionals that Suzanne and I continue to this day and a commitment to being a servant leader at home, at work or in the community.

I have grown spiritually since moving to Chambersburg in 2012 and becoming a member of King Street Church in 2013. Through some months on my own, the challenge of teaching Sunday School with the high school group and through interactions with wise friends in the Feet to Faith Sunday School class, it has been a time of growth.

Romans 8:28 says that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who are called according to His purpose. It can be difficult sometimes to feel this in real time but upon reflection and prayer, it becomes clear that these words are true. God’s great love and the sacrifice of Christ are active for us 24/7.

I face the future with the assurance that God guides and directs my steps even when I don’t see the path.

Barnabas Team Report: Haiti Tripby Jay BrownPastor of Mission and Discipleship

Bouncing along the rutted streets of Port-au-Prince in a crowded minivan, you never know what you are going to encounter as you drive away from the airport in Haiti. The scenes around you are a blur of color and people, music and noise

all seemingly going in different directions at once. As the street scene thins out and gives way to more space in the country, you are able to focus a bit longer on the images of extreme poverty that pass by the window. But there is a warmth and a beauty in the color, and some-times chaos, that kaleidoscopes around you.

Although I have been in Haiti on several prior occasions, I was particularly looking forward to this trip and the opportunity to see what has developed through our partner-ship with the U.B. churches there, particularly the church in Arcahaie that we have worked so closely with (alongside C.H. Global). It is amazing and encouraging to see firsthand the fruit that has grown out of those relationships over the past few years. The church, which

MISSIONS NEWS

once met in cramped quarters off an alleyway in town, now has a large and airy building that held 200 people for the Sunday morning service – with room for more. A humming diesel gen-erator provides the power for the sound system which is set at the preferred setting – maximum volume! The school, with multiple classrooms,

The church at Arcahaie, looking from the pulpit toward the back

is adjacent on the property and pulses with the voices and activity of children in bright-colored uniforms during the week. The students, many of whom receive support through sponsorship from KSC, exhibit a healthy energy. The water depot is open frequently, providing cheap, clean water for the church and school and also the community.

With all that has been accomplished, though, perhaps the most gratifying thing about the whole experience is to see the love, respect and trust that have grown up over time between our team members and the brothers and sisters in Haiti. This is no easy thing to achieve for people from extremely different cultures who don’t speak the same language! But through our shared experience of Christ, it has become possible.

For all the good things that have been built, both materially and relationally, many chal-lenges remain. The “chalkboards” in the school are really just plywood, hard to write on and hard to erase. Teachers need higher levels of training and skill. Leaders and servants in the church need a better understanding of their biblical roles and how the church can function more effectively as an organization. This is more difficult as many adults in the church cannot

The Mission of Grace orphanage where KSC sponsors some children

read and some cannot write their own names. The church needs to progress toward becoming a church that assists with the needs of other churches and not just one that receives assis-tance. The list goes on, but all of these issues

Rick, Rodney, and Justin installing “chalkboards”

are really opportunities for us to minister in productive ways alongside our Haitian partners on behalf of our family in Christ.

Our team on this trip had the opportunity to minister in a number of helpful ways. Our edu-cators worked with the school teachers during a number of sessions to build and enrich their teaching skills. The team conducted well-at-tended parenting seminars that provided basic

information on issues of childhood develop-ment, nutrition, discipline and spiritual nurtur-ing. We met with Pastors Massillon (Arcahaie), Richard (U.B. Superintendent, Port-au-Prince) and church lay leaders to discuss longer-term planning and leadership issues. Our nurse sat for long days to perform basic health assess-ments and found many people suffering from uncomfortable, but easily treatable, ailments. With locals contributing help, our builders worked tirelessly all week to finish student and teacher desks that now fill the school. Most of those activities took place in the new building, which King Street has contributed so much to through its partnership and your generosity. It’s a setting for praise!

Please continue to pray with us about the direction of our future involvement in Haiti. Our core desires have always been to see the church strengthened in its ministry and level of impact in the community around it and to see our family in Christ flourish as their physical needs are met in a difficult environment. With such a solid foundation in place, we trust that God will lead us in new directions for the sake of his Name and the growth of his kingdom. We are grateful to you, the members and leadership of King Street, for all that you have provided in pursuit of these goals.

Team members on this trip were Sue Marshall, Karen Byers, Maria Banks, Cindee Mose, Ellen Gigliotti, Jim Byers, Rick Sanders, Jay Brown, Justin Sollenberger, Rodney Mose (leader). We were also glad to be joined by Mark Wallace, the director of our ministry partner C.H. Global.
