Parish Mission Statement

St. Barbara Parish carries on the faith tradition estab-lished in 1894 by our Slovenian and German ancestors. Like our founders, we are called by Baptism to live as ex-amples of Catholic faith and values, and as witnesses of Christ in the world. Our parish is small in size but great in heart. We are a diverse community who together seek to strengthen faith through liturgy and education, and through service to community in charity. We strive to love God with all our hearts and minds.

Pray for the Sick

Pray for the sick of our parish, our family and friends, especially Charles Barnett, Ted Long, Andrea Littlejohn, Elizabeth McKeever, Elaine Fields, Joan Crum, Karen Recrosio, Gloria Fortunato, Edna Koczaja, John Pulford, Mary Rosato, Ann Mary Mazzocco, Kathy D’Amico, Sophie Kramzer, and those in nursing homes and their caregivers; the return of inactive members of our parish to the practice of their faith; the respect of all human life and the end of abortions. We pray for the safety of our troops, their safe return and for their families at home. Call the rectory office if you are homebound or in a nursing home and would like to receive Communion or if you are a patient in a hospital and would like a visit from a priest, please call 412.221.5152.

NEWS FOR LIFE: It has been 50 years since Pope Paul VI's groundbreaking encyclical about love, sex, and marriage Humanae Vitae. A documentary “The Sexual Revolution: 50 Years Since Humane Vitae” is being shown across the country. It is not available in the Pittsburgh area yet, but the trailer gives a glimpse into the movie: https://www.sexualrevolutionmovie.com/trailer.html. Seven years in the making, SEXUAL REVO-LUTION seeks to examine the effects of the free-love ex-periment of the hippie generation and the prophetic en-cyclical, Humanae Vitae. This beautiful documentary closely examines the history of the parallel developments of the Pill and modern Natural Family Planning (NFP) by telling the little known story of the founding doctors – Dr. Gregory Goodwin Pincus and Drs. John & Evelyn Billings - all of whom were once colleagues. The centerpiece of the film is the dramatic life story of Alana Newman, a tal-ented secular musician who gives up her entire musical career for life, family, and love. Alana shares how through desperation to know her father, she finally discov-ers the treasures of Theology of the Body, Humanae Vi-tae, and the riches of true freedom through a dramatic conversion.

STRENGTHENED BY THE BREAD OF LIFE Today we resume the “Bread of Life” discourse from John’s Gospel that began two weeks ago. He makes reference to the Jews’ ancestors who ate man-na in the desert. These days we would think primari-ly of Israel wandering in the desert, but faithful Jews would also have known the story of Elijah that we hear today. Strengthened by food and drink in the desert, the angel of the Lord sends him on his forty-day and forty-night journey (the biblical number for a preparation time). Like the food given to Elijah in the desert, Jesus tells his listeners that he is bread for the life of the world. It is very important that we not stop listening to Jesus after his promise of eter-nal life—a marvelous promise, but this “reward” is not the only reason we feast on the Bread of Life. We also come to the table to be made strong for the journey of mission, that the whole world might have life in the fullness of Christ. We are compelled, if we have eaten of the bread of life, to go forth in service to all. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

TODAY’S READINGS First Reading — Elijah looked and there at his head was a hearth cake and a jug of water (1 Kings 19:4-8). Psalm — Taste and see the goodness of the Lord (Psalm 34). Second Reading — Be imitators of God, as beloved children, and live in love (Ephesians 4:30 — 5:2). Gospel — Jesus said, “I am the living bread; whoever eats this bread will live forever” (John 6:41-51). So Be Imitators of God, As

Beloved Children, and Live in Love – The call of Saint Paul in his letter to the Ephesians to “be imitators of God” gives us pause to ponder what we expect of God and what we should expect of ourselves and others. Don’t we expect God to be patient, compassionate, loving, merciful and wise? Don’t we trust that God will pro-vide for our needs, bestow peace in our hearts and be a source of courage and strength? Saint Paul, then, urges that our lives reflect these virtues and more so that others will know that God is alive in the world. The context of this responsibility of faith is that we do it as beloved children of God, as be-loved sisters and brothers. While family life is not always easy or without its challenges, the family is the most fundamental structure of love and support in our world. We seek to reflect the love of God as husbands and wives, parents and children, aunts and uncles. And as a family of faith this love must flow through us for others as we build up the King-dom of God. May our efforts On Mission for The Church Alive! inspire us to live in love as a sisters and brothers in God our Father. Visit onmission-churchalive.org to learn more and to stay informed.
