SUNDAY THOUGHT John 1:35-42

In today’s Gospel we gain some insight into

what it means to be a follower or disciple of

Jesus Christ. When Jesus called Andrew and his

brother Peter to be His friends, Jesus didn’t ask

them to go out and do great things for Him or

even empower them to be famous people. Jesus

simply began by asking them to “stay with

Him.” With close intimate contact on a daily

basis, Andrew and Peter gradually came to take

on the very likeness of Jesus. This is still the

calling of everyone who is invited to follow

Him. We too have been invited to “come and

see.” He has chosen us to know Him and by

knowing Him, to love Him more and more each

day. Let us humbly turn to Jesus today and

open our hearts to receive Him more and more

each day.

SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME JANUARY 14, 2018

CELEBRATING THE SAINTS Saint Theodore Guerin, Foundress (1798-1856)

Anne-Therese Guerin came from Etables, in

Brittany, France. At the age of ten, she already knew

she would be a nun. Five years later, her father was

murdered, and young Anne took on the household

duties of her grieving mother. When she was twenty-

five, she convinced her mother to let her go to the

Sisters of Providence to serve the sick poor and

educate the young. She became Sister Saint Theodore.

When Theodore was asked by her community

to go on mission to the wild interior of North America,

Theodore wondered how she could manage, being of

slight constitution and chronic intestinal discomfort.

Nevertheless, she went, leading five other nuns on the

three-month journey that ended at a tiny log cabin in

the dense woods of Indiana. The fierce weather and

sparse supplies made for a challenging first winter,

yet, with a pioneer’s gumption, Theodore moved

forward. Within a year the sisters had begun a school

for girls. They continued to found schools throughout

Indian, winning over anti-Catholic settlers and the

local bishop, who, wanting to change the

Congregations Rule, had excommunicated Theodore

for a time.

Theodore’s letters show a determined, certain

woman, as direct in encouragement as she is in

correction. She entrusted all to God’s providence.

“After all, our only support, our only strength, is

God.” Saint Theodore Guerin died on May 14, 1856 at

the age of 57 at Saint-Mary-of-the Woods, Indiana.

Her feast day is May 14th.

SOCIAL CONCERNS COMMISSION The St. Anthony Social Concerns

volunteers will be serving lunch at the

West Side Catholic Center on Tuesday,

January 16, 2018. Your homemade desserts are truly

appreciated by the people who eat at the center. Some

of the men and women from the center ask us to

package their desserts to take home so we are asking

for brownies (preferably without icing), cookies, bar

cookies, or breads that can be sliced (banana,

pumpkin, etc.). You can drop off your bakery at the

rectory on Monday, January 15, 2018. If you would

like to help us in our mission to serve the needy and

you really don’t like to bake, please consider a cash

donation to help defray the cost of our meals. Any

donations are welcome. Thank you.

CHRISTMAS All women of the parish are invited to attend a service project and fireside chat hosted by the Women’s Faith Ministry on Wednesday, January 17 at 7

p.m. in the Hospitality Room. Feel free to invite other women outside the parish to join us for fellowship and refreshments. Please RSVP by Monday, January 15 by calling the parish office at (440) 842-2666 or by sending an email to [email protected]. This program will be cancelled if other events in Parma are cancelled due to weather conditions. Tune in to the news for that information.

CATHOLIC GLOSSARY

Ordinary Time: A period of time during the liturgical

year. Ordinary does not mean dull or boring, but that

we are “ordering” our life around Jesus. As we walk

through the life of Christ, this is the time of

conversion, of growth, and of maturation in Jesus

Christ.

WEEKLY MASS REMINDER The liturgical color for Ordinary Time is green. In

nature, living plants and trees are green in appearance.

In faith, this color symbolizes our hope of eternal life

in Jesus Christ.

MYSTAGOGICAL MOMENTS Mystagogy (mist-a-go-gee) is prayerful reflection on the presence of God in the midst of events. Begin your conversation with God with this question: Question: What was it like to see the priest in Green

again? How does Christ give you life? How does Christ

give you hope?

SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME JANUARY 14, 2018

CHRISTIAN UNITY

Thursday of this week, January 18, 2018 begins the yearly Week of Pray for Christian Unity. This week of prayer concludes on the Feast of the Conversion of St. Paul, Thursday January 25, 2018. Recognizing our serious obligation to pray as Jesus asked the night before he died for us that ”All Should be One,” let us join with Pope Francis and Christians around the world in prayer this coming week.

Prayer for Christian Unity On the night before he died for us, Jesus said, I pray not only for my own disciples, but also for those who will believe in me through their word, so that they may be one, as you, Father, are in me and I am in you, that they may be one in us, that the world will know that you sent me. V. I say to you, you are Peter : R. And upon this rock I will build my Church.

(Mention the daily Prayer Intention)

(Thursday) For the return of the “other sheep” to the One Fold of our Lord Jesus Christ. (Friday) For the return of the Eastern Orthodox Churches to the Apostolic See. (Saturday) For the return of the Anglicans to the authority of the Vicar of Christ. (Sunday) For the return of all Protestants to the unity of the Catholic Church. (Monday) That Christians in America be one with the Chair of St. Peter. (Tuesday) For the return of lapsed Catholics to the sacraments. (Wednesday) For the conversion of the Jewish people to the Catholic Faith. (Thursday) That missionary zeal will conquer the world for Christ.

(Concluded)

Let us pray. O Lord Jesus Christ, you said to your apostles;

Peace I leave with you, my peace I give you; look not on

our sins, but upon the faith of your Church and grant her

the peace and unity you promise. We ask this through the

same Christ our Lord. Amen.

SEMINARIANS OF THE WEEK Let’s promote vocations by praying for our

diocesan seminarians. Please pray for :

Ryan Arto, Michael Bedell, and Charles Bulger.

LIGHTHOUSE CATHOLIC MEDIA

Stop by the Lighthouse Media display in the hallway off of the Church gathering area and check out the selection of CDs. The CDs are great to listen to while driving in your car. This is a great way to grow spirituality and gain new insights into our Catholic Faith.
