OUR RESPONSIBILITY FOR OTHERS

The Second Vatican Council has called us to envision the

Church as the people of God. As a community of believers

we are responsible for our brothers and sisters, their

salvation, their journey of faith, their physical well-being.

Many of the documents of Vatican II and volumes of work

since the mid-1960s give us advice, guidelines, and

encouragement to take care of one another: the poor, the

elderly, the unborn, the broken, the infirm.

Because Vatican II is part of our recent history—

indeed many of us were already born—this may strike us as

a new and revolutionary idea. But today’s readings show us

the agelessness of the issue of social justice. Eight hundred

years before Christ was born, Amos warned the wealthy not

to cheat the poor. In Paul’s first letter to Timothy, he

encourages all prayers to be for all people; and finally, the

Gospel urges the wise use of money.

FAITH FORMATION CATECHIST 2016-17

A PRAYER FOR CATECHIST.

Loving God, Creator of all things,

You call us to be in relationship with You and others.

Thank You for calling me to be a catechist,

for the opportunity to share with others

what You have given to me.

May all those with whom I share the gift of faith

discover how You are present in all things.

May they come to know You, the one true God,

and Jesus Christ, whom You have sent.

May the grace of the Holy Spirit guide my heart and lips,

so that I may remain constant in loving and praising You.

May I be a witness to the Gospel and a minister of Your truth.

May all my words and actions reflect Your love.

Amen.

“The world has changed. I feel it is in the water. I feel it in the earth. I smell it on the air.” With these words begin the movie, The Fellowship of the Ring, words of warning and premonition. I always wonder how much we see the Scriptures as words of warning and premonition. I am convinced that we look towards the Scriptures for words of comfort and strength, I am not so convinced we see them in any other ways. Do we see change in the water, or earth, or on the air? Do we feel it wash over us in waves of grace and mercy? Can we feel the earth below our feet offering both stability and soil for growth and fruitfulness? Do we sniff the air for the smell of rain blowing in upon the winds? This week please consider reflecting on the response to the first reading. “Thanks be to God.” We have been warned about becoming cheats and thieves. We have been accused of not honoring the sabbath of God, looking to-wards selling and buying instead of sitting in rest and in the presence of God on His day. And our liturgical re-sponse to be called idolaters, and cheats and thieves? “Thanks be to God.” Thank you for calling us what we often are. Let us be changed in water, earth, and air. So that our lives more fully reflect Christ who has claimed us as his own.

South Deanery Meeting. The South Deanery meeting will be held on Sept. 24 from 10-12 in the A/R. ALL catechist and St. Anthony school teachers are encouraged to attend, the theme of the meeting is “Ministering as One for Children and Youth” for more information or if you have any questions please call Aracely Correa at 364-6150.

Update: Catherine Cortez is doing well after her shoulder repair surgery she had in Lubbock. Catherine will be doing Rehab for her shoulder soon, please keep Catherine in your prayers for a quick and easy recovery.
