ALMSGIVING, PRAYER, FASTING,
AND TEMPTATION As we begin our season of fasting, prayer, and almsgiving,
the reading from Deuteronomy reminds us of our duty of alms-
giving, that we “set [our offerings] before the Lord, [our] God,
[and] shall bow down in [God’s] presence” (Deuteronomy
26:10). The reading from Romans refers us to our prayer, re-
minding us that “The word is near you, in your mouth and in
your heart . . . For everyone who calls on the name of the Lord
will be saved” (Romans 10:8, 13). These are comforting words,
and encourage us to ask God for what we need and to aid us in
our prayer. Finally, the Gospel of Luke shows us a fasting Jesus,
who was tempted as we are, and who knows what it means to be
human. Someone once said that temptation arises when you’re
tired and weary, and the devil comes along and makes a per-
fectly reasonable suggestion. Jesus shows us that, with his help,
we too can overcome our temptations, reasonable as they may
sound. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co

MARK YOUR CALENDARS—LENT MISSION—APRIL 1 & 2 at 6:30 pm Saint Anthony of Padua has been called the Apostle of Forgiveness, perhaps because he calls for-
giveness a “‘spiritual almsgiving,’ without which all good things lack the reward of eternal life.”
By exploring some of the writings of the Evangelical Doctor, we will consider what it means to
forgive and how we might be moved to forgiveness so as to attain salvation.

From the desk of our pastor, Father Tony Neusch.
I have a feeling that a common morning refrain in any household with school children is, “Get your stuff to-
gether.” It may even be a refrain from work. To get our stuff together. I think that it may even be the sign that we
have turned into an adult, we have gotten our stuff together, at least some of the time. A major portion of the temple
offering as recounted in the first reading has everything to do with this image of having your stuff together, or more
precisely that I don’t have my stuff together.
Moses tells the people. Bring your offering to the temple, hand it to the priest and tell the priest, “I don’t
have my stuff together.” In recounting the story of salvation thus far, the Israelites say every time they offer to the
Lord, “I don’t have it together, but you oh God do. I have been brought home from wandering, exile, and oppression
to my homeland, and I had nothing to do with it.” Every time they offer first fruits and ritual sacrifice they are told
to remind themselves that what they offer is a gift they have received.
This ritual of recounting the deeds of the Lord God, is a constant reminder that though I am no longer wan-
dering, or in exile, or oppressed, there are those who are and I am no better than those who harmed me if I harm
those less fortunate. This Lent may we seek out the lost, the forsaken, and the hurting and show them the love and
care we have so graciously received.
Fassolatha—Greek White Bean Soup
Ingredients
1 lb. dried white beans (such as Great Northern or Navy beans)
10 cups water
1/2 cup olive oil
1 large onion (diced)
2 medium carrots (diced)
2 ribs celery (diced)
1 bay leaf
1 - 14 oz. can diced plum tomatoes (un-drained)
2 tbsp. tomato paste
Dash salt (or to taste)
Dash freshly ground black pepper (or to taste)
1/4 cup fresh parsley (chopped, for garnish)
For the Soup
1. Soak Beans overnight
2. Gather the ingredients.
3. Add the beans, water, and olive oil to a large, non-reactive soup pot and bring to a boil.
4. Reduce heat and simmer covered until beans are tender but not mushy, about 1 hour.
5. Add vegetables, tomatoes, tomato paste, and bay leaf to the pot and simmer uncovered another 30-45
minutes for flavors to meld and soup to thicken a bit.
6. Season the soup with salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste. Remove the bay leaf and sprinkle with
chopped fresh parsley before serving.
Note: Adding an acidic ingredient like tomato to the soup before the beans are cooked can toughen the skins on the
beans.
