The mystery and authority of the ordinary

Page 2: St Andrew’s on The Terrace · Murua o mātou hara, me mātou hoki e muru nei I o te hunga e hara ana ki a mātou. Aua hoki mātou e kawea kia whakawaia; Engari whakaorangia mātou

WELCOME TO ST ANDREW’S ON THE TERRACE Wherever you are on your faith's journey,

wherever you have come from and wherever you are going to, whatever you believe, whatever you do not believe, you are welcome here.

Please join in the congregational responses printed in bold italics. Please stand if you are able, for the hymns and the offering prayer.

We will sing the hymns without announcement. Please note your nearest fire exit.

The church and hall have been earthquake strengthened. In an earthquake: drop, cover and hold.

GATHERING Ordinary days have as much potential for wonder as days marked for special attention. Routine is holy ground as much as sand round a burning bush, the regular as spiritual as the festival the mundane as holy as momentous celebrations

Watch then, for those moments when the ordinary reveals that something extra.

PROCESSIONAL HYMN ‘Celebrate a New Day Dawning’ Words: © Jann Aldredge-Clanton Inclusive Hymns for Liberating Christians (Eakin Press, 2006) #52 Used by permission CCLI Licence 334155

Celebrate a new day dawning, sunrise of a golden morn; Christ Sophia dwells among us, glorious visions now are born. Equal partners ‘round the table, we make dreams reality; calling out our gifts we nurture hope beyond all we can see.

Christ Sophia lights the pathway to a world of harmony; Sister, Brother, Love surrounds us, nourishing our synergy. Earth joins in our rich communion, grateful for our healing care; leaping deer and soaring eagles, all Earth’s fullness now can share.

Page 3: St Andrew’s on The Terrace · Murua o mātou hara, me mātou hoki e muru nei I o te hunga e hara ana ki a mātou. Aua hoki mātou e kawea kia whakawaia; Engari whakaorangia mātou

Sing a song of jubilation, dance and joyous revelry; clapping trees and laughing rivers join our call to liberty. Free at last to blossom fully, flowing forth in beauty bright, we become a new creation, bursting open into light.

OPENING RESPONSES (please remain standing) In some ways this day is like any other;

we rose and readied ourselves, we left our homes. Yet today we gather for a purpose;

alert for presence among us and within us, pondering the potential of ordinary moments and days

and the authority which then arises within us. Like any other day we set the table of ordinary time

break bread, lift the cup, commune together Any day can be the day of encounter

this day can be filled with wonder and delight

WELCOME Kia ora tatou.

Kia ora.

LIGHTING THE RAINBOW CANDLE TIME WITH THE CHILDREN Fionnaigh McKenzie BLESSING THE CHILDREN (All stand)

We send you to the Rainbow Room programme to hear stories, ask questions and have fun together.

God bless you. Amen. THE WORD IN TEXTS Roger Jones

Hebrew Bible 1 Samuel 4: 8-20 and 11: 14-15

Gospel Mark 3: 20-35

Contemporary reading From “Aurora Leigh” by Elizabeth Barrett Browning (1806-1861)

…And truly, I reiterate, nothing’s small! No lily-muffled hum of a summer-bee, But finds some coupling with the spinning stars; No pebble at your foot, but proves a sphere; No chaffinch, but implies the cherubim; And (glancing on my own thin, veinèd wrist), In such a little tremor of the blood The whole strong clamour of a vehement soul Doth utter itself distinct. Earth’s crammed with heaven, And every common bush afire with God; But only he who sees, takes off his shoes, The rest sit round it and pluck blackberries, And daub their natural faces unaware…

RESPONSE

For the word of God in scripture for the word of God among us for the word of God within us,

We give thanks

HYMN ‘Gifts of the Spirit: When our Lord worked the earth’ From Heaven Shall not Wait pp96-97 Authors Graham Maule, John L Bell © 1987 Iona Community Used by permission CCLI Licence 334155

When our Lord walked the earth, All the world found its worth; As declared at his birth, God became our neighbour, Granting, with his favour,

Power to speak and heal, grace to know what’s real, wisdom, insight and faith, love and understanding.

Through his life, through his death, through each gesture and breath, Jesus joined faith and deed, model for our caring, showing and yet sharing

Power to speak and heal, grace to know what’s real, wisdom, insight and faith, love and understanding.

Jesus loves all his friends and that love never ends; to his Church gifts he sends through the Holy Spirit. These we still inherit:

Power to speak and heal, grace to know what’s real, wisdom, insight and faith, love and understanding.

Sing and smile and rejoice, clap your hands, raise your voice; for, with unnerving choice, God, in Christ, has found us and displays around us

Page 7: St Andrew’s on The Terrace · Murua o mātou hara, me mātou hoki e muru nei I o te hunga e hara ana ki a mātou. Aua hoki mātou e kawea kia whakawaia; Engari whakaorangia mātou

Power to speak and heal, grace to know what’s real, wisdom, insight and faith, love and understanding.

LIFE IN THE COMMUNITY OF ST ANDREW’S People share notices and visitors are welcomed. If you have a notice, please move to the front row, ready to speak briefly from the lectern.

OFFERING PRAYER (said together)

Compassionate God, who calls all people to be one family, teach us to share your gifts with each other, strengthen us to make peace by working together, and challenge us with a vision of the feast where all are welcome. Amen We recognise and bless the gifts brought to the table, and those which wing their way electronically from our banks to the church’s account.

PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE Linda Wilkins

CIRCLE OF PRAYER We think today of the people of Guatemala and Belize and the indigenous communities working towards self-determination. In New Zealand, we remember those in Parliament, and today we name Tutehounuku (Nuk) Korako and Melissa Lee, list MP’s. Here in Wellington, we pray for the leaders and people of Khandallah Presbyterian Church.

Jesus, forgive us all That we use your name Though we stand apart, We refuse your prayer To be one at heart Jesus, forgive us all.

PASSING THE PEACE Feel free to pass the peace with those nearby or move to greet others further away. Passing the peace consists of shaking hands and saying “Peace be with you.” The response is “Peace be with you” or just “And with you.” Or, simply saying ‘Hello” is a good idea. Also feel free to simply observe if you wish!

HYMN AA36 ‘Every day I will offer you’ Music: ©1993 Colin Gibson Words: ©1992 Shirley Murray Used by permission CCLI Licence 334155

Every day I will offer you, loving God, my heart and mind, every way I discover you in the work your hand has signed; help me see I’m your image, and you have dreamed what I might be, every day in your Spirit, I’ll find the love and energy!

Every day I will look to Christ, and give thanks for wine and bread through the pain and the emptiness where your world cries to be fed; help me see I can work for change, and wherever I might be, every day in your Spirit, I’ll find the love and energy!

Every day I will take your word, answer your compassion’s claim, celebrate every sign of hope, every deed done in your name; help me see you are always there, and your light can shine through me, every day in your Spirit, I’ll find the love and energy!

BLESSING AND SUNG AMEN

WELLINGTON STUDY GROUP There is an invitation from the Wellington Study Group to come to their turning ceremony on Friday 12th June. The turning ceremony is called the Mukabeleh, which means "coming face to face with the beauty of God”. This is a religious ceremony for all religions. The turners are commonly known as the “whirling dervishes” and the tradition was evolved by Rumi the Sufi mystic and poet in the 13th century. The Study Group have held this tradition in its pure form since 1983.

Page 12: St Andrew’s on The Terrace · Murua o mātou hara, me mātou hoki e muru nei I o te hunga e hara ana ki a mātou. Aua hoki mātou e kawea kia whakawaia; Engari whakaorangia mātou

It was given from to them by direct descendants of Rumi. Those people who come to see the turning ceremony are known as the “lovers.” On Friday 12 June at 7.15 pm an explanation of the symbolism will be read, followed by the ceremony which lasts for an hour. Afterwards there will be an opportunity to reflect if anyone has questions. Wellington Study Group, 31 Hobson Crescent, Thorndon. Parking is available in the school grounds next door. A temporary key has been put out for the kitchen cupboard for use on Sunday, but this is the office copy and it would be helpful to find the original. Thank you, David and Karyn.

July 2015 - 14 & 21 Art Lectures on The new St Peter's Basilica Complex, Rome 1506 -1667 What the human spirit is capable of achieving! By Dr Christopher Evan Longhurst These lectures will look at building the new St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome and the role this structure plays in uplifting the human spirit to the uncreated source of all beauty. From the High Renaissance to the High Baroque, from Pope Julius II (r.1503-13) to Pope Alexander VII (r.1655-67); from Bramante’s classic floor plan to Michelangelo’s colossal dome, from Maderno’s imposing facade to Bernini’s captivating piazza, it unfolds the history, architecture, furnishings and treasures of the building and decoration of the new St. Peter’s, Rome. A must for connoisseurs of fine culture, art history, religion and the arts, or anyone who has visited or wants to visit this remarkable, unique and influential site.
