Prayers for the Church Following the Anglican Cycle of Prayer, please pray for Bishop Dhiloraj Canagasabey and the priests, deacons, religious, and laity of The Church of Sri Lanka (Ceylon). Sri Lanka is a 25,000 square mile island off the south-east coast of India.

The first Anglican services were held in 1796, and missionaries began their work in 1818. Until 1970, the Church was part of the Church of India, Pakistan, Burma, and Ceylon. There are two dioceses: Colombo is the older diocese having been founded in 1845 and Kurunegala in 1950. The Church continues as extraprovincial under the Archbishop of Canterbury.

Buddhism is the state religion in Sri Lanka and, as such, is protected and promoted. Although freedom for other religions is assured constitutionally, there has been a steady erosion of that freedom with discrimination against minority religions in taxation, employment and education and, sadly, since 1988, a rising anti-Christian feeling. The country’s population is 72 percent Buddhist, 12 percent Hindu, 8 percent Muslim, and 8 percent Christian. The Church of Ceylon is the third largest Christian denomination, with 54,000 members (Roman Catholics, with over a million members, greatly outnumber all the other Christian denominations combined). Christianity, with a 2 percent annual growth rate, is the fastest growing religion in the country.

Please pray especially for the continuing work of the Church in providing assistance to those affected by the devastating floods and landslides in June 2016 (more than 100 killed and thousands left homeless) and for peaceful evangelism.

Following the Diocesan Cycle of Prayer, please pray for Fr. Tony Bender and the people of St. Patrick, Westfield, Indiana; and for Fr. Todd Boyce and the people of Saints Mary and Martha, Mount Sterling, Kentucky.

Following the Parish Cycle of Prayer, please pray for Fr. Wil Verhoff; Chuck and Joyce Waddell; Jon and Jacquie Wallace; the Celebrate Marriage Small Group; and the Kitchen Saints. Please also pray for those whose work puts them in danger: God, please be their fortress and their shield.

Mid-week Prayer Service Oct. 26 Come raise your mind, heart and spirit to God at the next mid-week prayer service on Wednesday, Oct. 26, in the Sanctuary from 12 to 1 p.m. “ And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might.“ (Deuteronomy 6:5)

All Saints Children’s Procession Sunday, Oct. 30 Our annual All Saints Procession will be held Sunday, Oct. 30. Children are invited to wear their Halloween costumes and participate in the All- Saints Procession during the 9 a.m. and 11:15 a.m. services. Fr. Ron Baird will give a short homily on the origin and real meaning of Halloween — All Hallow’s Eve — and the meaning of All Saints Day. There will be treats at both Sunday services — and yes, on Saturday, too!

Vestry Elections Nov. 5 & 6On Saturday, Nov. 5 and Sunday, Nov. 6, the Parish will vote to elect four members to serve three-year terms — from 2017 through 2019 — on our St. Andrew’s Vestry. Vestry’s overall responsibilities include visioning, overseeing the direction of the Parish, and promoting our purpose and mission. They meet monthly on the third Monday evening. If you’re interested in serving your parish on Vestry , please speak with a current Vestry member about what’s involved, or talk with Fr. Ron. Vestry names and contact information are listed in the Member Connection of our website, standrewspolaris.org, and on the bulletin board just inside the Gathering Area to the right. Vestry candidate forms are at the Welcoming Desk in the Narthex and can also be downloaded from our Member Connection. Candidate forms must be completed and returned to the parish office no later than Sunday, Oct. 16, to allow the forms to be prepared and available to the parish two weeks prior to the election, as our bylaws require.

Encouragement for your prayer time with GodLord, in your mercy, Hear our prayers. “The desire of the humble You have heard, O Lord; You make their heart attentive; You bend Your ear” (Psalm 10:17) “I called on You, for You will answer me, O God; incline Your ear to me, and hear my speech.” (Psalm 17:6) “And shall not God avenge His own elect and be patient with them, who cry day and night to Him?” (Luke 18:7) — From the St. Andrew’s Prayer Ministries Team

We are blessed with another opportunity to support the Kairos Prison Ministry with our prayers, letters, financial resources, and — yes — cookies! Fifty-five women will enter the Ohio Reformatory for Women in Marysville Oct. 27 - 30

to take the message of Jesus’ love to a group of 42 inmates

there. Among them will be our own Donna Gough! As

a Christian community, our help is needed to bring the changing love of Jesus Christ

to those whose lives can most be changed by him!

Here’s how you can help:

1 We need prayers! Prayer is the “oil” that keeps the wheels of Kairos going! Prayers are needed always, but especially for all 80-plus hours of the weekend. Please choose a half-hour or hour and pray for the 42 inmates, some of whom will be hearing the message of Christ for the first time. A sign-up chart will be in the Gathering Area.

2 We need cookies! Home-baked, prayed over while baking! We take “Christ on a cookie” to every corner of the institutions. They are the bait that we use as “fishers of men.” During each Kairos weekend, all the inmates in an institution are treated

gg

to homemade cookies. We pray that whoever receives the cookies will also be open to receiving the Lord. Chocolate chip cookies are the favorite, and we ask that they be packed one dozen to a quart zip-lock bag. Other kinds, such as oatmeal-raisin, peanut butter, etc. will not be shared with the general population, but used only by the participants. They should be packed one dozen to a quarter zip-lock bag without the zipper. Cookies are needed by Oct. 26.

3 We need money! It costs $150 for each prison resident who attends a Kairos weekend. To provide one meal for one resident is approximately $5. Small contributions add up quickly! Is God calling you to write a check?

4 We need letters; just short notes of encouragement. Cards are wonderful. Just address on the card or letter “Dear Sister in Christ,” and put it in a plain, unsealed envelope. Any number are acceptable.

5 If you are so minded, we can also use banners, posters, and decorated placemats!

More information is available at the Kairos display in the Gathering Area. Donna loves to talk about Kairos, so ask her any questions you may have after church or call her at 614-948-3833! “Inasmuch as you have done it unto the least of these, you have done it unto Me.” — Jesus Christ

St. Andrew’s serves at Common Ground Saturday, Sept. 17, was St. Andrew’s turn to serve at the Common Ground Free Store in Delaware. It was a beautiful day and we all enjoyed working and serving our brothers and sisters in Christ. We were fulfilling the Outreach Team’s mission “To treat our neighbors with respect and humanity while responding to their needs, bringing them one step closer to Christ.”Thank you to Pete Wilkinson and Bob Beverick for their innovative ideas. Pete brought four bottles of sour cream and Bob brought four bottles of taco sauce. This allowed us to have one of each on every table. No more placing these items in small cups; what a time saver! Also, thanks to the food providers: Erica Weiser; Kathy Seitz; Kathy Summers; Corkeè Miller; Karen Osmond; Diane Bobay; Larry and Patti Cooper; Sue McKeown; Jon and Jacquie Wallace; Danielle Tranchina; Rachel, Carlo, Genevieve and Mackenzie Cherubini; Jim and Jackie Menke; Pete and Terri Wilkinson; Amy Beverick; Justin Anthony; Sarah Fabian; and Frank and Marty Scott. It was a great and fun time working in the newly remodeled store. If you have not seen it since the remodeling you need to go and visit. Thank you to the following for volunteering: Larry and Patti Cooper; Pete Wilkinson; Judy Baird; Ryan, Diane, Caroline and Sophia Bobay; Corkeè Miller; Bob and Hope Beverick; Kathy Summers; Alan Carter; and Frank and Marty Scott. The next time we serve is Jan. 21 We will not be serving the Saturday before Thanksgiving, as we’ve done for the past four or five years, because another church asked to serve that day and it was decided to give them this blessed opportunity. Please mark your calendar for Jan. 21, 2017!

Clockwise, from above, two sisters prepare to serve Free Store shoppers; Ryan Weiser chats with a shopper; and Pete Wilkinson and Ryan Bobay get ready to work check-out.

The Feast of St. Francis, celebrated in the Church worldwide on Oct. 4, commemorates the life of Francis of Assisi, who was born into a wealthy Italian family around 1181, and gave up his worldly

possessions to follow Jesus Christ and serve the poor. His love for nature is legendary, and he is known as the patron saint of animals and the environment.

Girards share Haiti experiences SundayPlease extend a warm St. Andrew’s welcome to Daniel and Maddie Girard, son and granddaughter of George and Barbara, who will be sharing with us during the Adult Forum on Sunday about their experiences in Haiti this past summer. Earlier this year, members of St. Andrew’s had an opportunity to provide support to the Girards for their mission trip. Also this Sunday, the loose offering will be earmarked for hurricane relief for Haiti.
