Fr. Joe . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Dear Saint Alphonsus Family, As I was write this letter, our state has started to move to the fourth phase of the reopening. In the last few months, we have been making a long and difficult journey together. One more phase to go when the vaccine is available, then we are free to gather together, to visit, to shake hands, to hug one another without fear. I cannot wait for that moment, and I know you feel the same. Two weeks ago when we first opened the church for daily Mass, I was surprised to see so many people, especially the seniors, at church. Last weekend, three out of the four Masses had the maximum number of attendants; about thirty people attended mass through phone or radio in their cars in the church parking lot, then received Communion. This tells me that many parishioners have been thirsty and hungry for the Words of God and the Eucharist. Because we did really well with the first weekend, we can cautiously open for more people every week until we reach about twenty percent of our church capacity. In order to get there, we need more people to register for Mass, we need more people to step up to volunteer as Greeters, Ushers, and Sanitizers. I would like to call upon young families with children to come back to church to worship God and to be involved. Teens and young adults too, the church really needs you during this time. This Saturday, Father Jack Hurley, after living here with us for almost 16 years, will celebrate his last Mass before he moves to the retirement home. We are so grateful for his service and great witness. It is a blessing for me to have a chance to live with him for two years. I gave him the nickname John the Baptist, because he not only looks like John the Baptist, but also has a clear message to give me and others about the spirit of detachment from material and worldly things, and about taking care of the poor in our society. Our parish has planted a tree in the school courtyard to honor and to remember him. May God continue to bless and watch over Fr. Jack as he moves on to the next chapter of his life. As we move forward in reopening our church, I am looking forward to seeing each and every one of you. One of the good things we learn from the pandemic is that we don’t take things for granted any more. Each time we can gather together to worship God as a community is a great gift, a blessing from God. May God bless and protect our parish during this time. Fr. Joseph Le

Parking Lot Mass Participation

to Receive Eucharist We invite you to participate in the Sunday, 11am Mass by parking your vehicle in the

back parking lot east of St. Alphonsus School.

While in your vehicle, you can live-stream the Mass OR

access an audio feed of the Mass by tuning your car radio to frequency FM88.9.

Please enter the parking lot using the thru-way on the south side of campus, passing the portico, dining hall and gym, around to the back, east of the school classrooms.

Please park in every other space and facing the school.

At the time for distribution of the Eucharist, an assistant will come out ahead of the Eucharistic Minister. Even though you are in your car, please put on a mask at this

time. You will need to roll down your car windows and hold out both your hands with your palms up. The assistant will spray your hands with hand sanitizer.

Then the Eucharistic Minister will give you communion. The Eucharistic Minister will be wearing a face covering/mask and a face shield.

The assistant will also be carrying a basket for offerings should you wish to make your Sunday donation in this way.

After Mass, please exit the way you entered, using the south drive.

Signing up ahead of time is not required for coming to the parking lot. Please be patient because it will take some time to get to each person. Thank you for the prayers you have

offered for our parish already! We know God hears them because we could not have come this far without them!

Bellarmine Virtual Retreat— Making Hope Real: A Live Virtual Retreat Presented by Becky Eldredge and Bellarmine Jesuit Retreat House With the reality of what we are facing in our lives, what others are facing around us, and what our world is facing together, how can we continue to have hope? The Good News is that hope is infused in us by God alone. Hope does not mean being naive or ignorant about what is happening in the world around us. It is not mere optimism. Hope invites us to see it all, as God does, and not get locked into the darkness. In this live virtual retreat, Becky Eldredge, spiritual director and author of Busy Lives & Restless Souls and The Inner Chapel, shows you how to make hope real, even when this season of life feels anything but hopeful. Two dates are available: June 30 evening retreat (6:30-9:30pm) or Wednesday, July 1 morning retreat (9:00am-Noon) presented live via Zoom. The retreat will include three talks, guided prayer reflections, silent prayer time (on your own), and electronic materials to support your prayer. Register at www.jesuitretreat.org. Cor Night - Virtual Theology on Tap— "Come with me to a quiet place, and let us rest awhile." -Mark 6:31 Cor Nights are prayer nights for young adults that are meant to be a time to rest and find peace in the calming atmosphere of God's presence. Live praise and worship music will be playing, a reflection on a Scripture passage will be shared and you can comment your prayer intentions as we go. Come to a time and space for the Holy Spirit to work in our hearts and bring about peace and healing (cor means "heart" in Latin). This event will be live streamed on the Chicago Theology On Tap Facebook page. Feel free to invite friends! https://www.facebook.com/ChicagoTOT/ “Unemployed Together”— Old St. Mary's Catholic Church is launching a virtual small faith group called "Unemployed Together" to help those facing the same challenge of unemployment grow in faith and relationship with Christ through the lens of this exceptionally challenging moment in life.
