By Allegheny LTG Mindy Bozick Everyone seems to be obsessed with the environment, preserving our wildlife, and conservation of our natural resources. What can you do? What can Circle K do? The answer is plenty! Now that Pennsylvania Circle K’s new District Service Project is Going Green, club and District Officers have been brainstorming of new ideas as well as keeping up with the regular “standards.” Many clubs already participate in Adopt-a-Highway. For those of you who may not know, Adopt-a-Highway is a program sponsored by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation. Organizations can claim two miles of road to clean up two to four times a year. If two miles seems like a lot for your club, ask your Kiwanis Club or Key Club to help you co-sponsor your road. Similar programs may exist with local city or state parks. See “Green” on page 8. March 2008 Page 1 Top: Elizabethtown CK’ers take a break from cleaning up a local road. Governor Kady: "I've had the time of my life, and I owe it all to you!’ I hope this year has been as incredible for you as it has been for me. It has been a complete honor and privilege to serve alongside of each of you this year and I could not be prouder to say that I am a Circle K member. Never stop being those "Everyday Heroes" and continue to touch lives and inspire! Secretary Stacy: Another year has come and gone and has truly been an amazing experience and I can not begin to express my gratitude to you for all of your support. We have reached new levels this year and I am so proud to say that I have been part of this awesome year. I wish the best of luck to all of the seniors graduating, and to everyone who is still continuing their Circle K career, live it up because it will be graduation day before you know it! I hate goodbyes, so this is just ‘see you later friends.’ Treasurer Elesha: As always your giving hearts and hard-working hands never cease to amaze me. It has been a great two years on the District Board, and it is because I had the chance to serve YOU!! To all my fellow seniors, best of luck as you continue your journey. Keep up the great work and we will definitely make our mark on the world. Editor Brett: It has been awesome traveling all across Pennsylvania this year! From Scranton to Pittsburgh and Erie to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Circle K’ers know how to do service and have fun too! Best of luck next year and see you around! I would like to thank my family for all of their love and support! Representative Steph: It has been an absolute pleasure to work with this mighty district over the past year, and I thank each and every one of you for your hard work and dedication to Circle K International. Keep up the great work in years to come! Allegheny LTG Mindy: This year has been a fun and unique experience for me. Serving the first half of the year as your Service Chair and the second half as the Allegheny LTG was extremely rewarding. I would like to thank the Allegheny Division for all of their hard work this year. Appalachian LTG Mike: It has been my distinct pleasure to have the privilege of serving as your Lt. Governor this past year. It's been a fantastic ride and I had such an amazing time traveling around to all the clubs and meeting all the terrific members in this division. You are all my everyday heroes and I hope that you will continue to serve and make a difference in the community. Have a great District Convention and hope to see you in Denver!

Capital LTG Kasey: It’s hard to believe that we are already at convention. I can’t put into words how amazing this year has been for me. The passion, energy, and dedication that this district possesses amazes me each and everyday. The Capital Division is truly my “Everyday Heroes”. The memories that I will take away from this year are something that I will cherish

forever. You all have inspired me to keep dreaming big. Although I have reached the end of Circle K, I am excited to start the next chapter in my life, Kiwanis. Center LTG Heather: I can't believe how one short year ago this journey all began. It has been wonderful serving as your PACK Center Division LTG. The things I have seen clubs in the Center Division and across the state accomplish are remarkable! Your passion and energy are contagious and always remind me why I love the K-Family. To the District Board: you are some of the greatest people I have ever met and I am lucky to call you friends. Finally I hope you all remember to Live Well, Laugh Often, Love Much, and always Dream Big!! Erie LTG Richard: I would like to thank you all for making the 2007-2008 year a great success. You have been a blessing not only to Circle K International and Pennsylvania Circle K, but you have been a blessing to your respective communities. It’s been great working with you for the past six months and may God bless you all!! Metro LTG Bonnie: To my friends, my growing family. By Treasurer Steven Smith and Vice President Theresa Penaranda Three Drexel Circle K’ers drove to Pegasus Riding Academy at Solly Avenue Stables on a brisk Saturday morning. The stables are awkwardly situated among the busy boulevards, buzzing cars, and commercial outlets plopped right in the middle of Northeast Philadelphia. We were greeted by Rachel, who briefed us for a bout 15 minutes on what Pegasus was all about and what we as volunteers were going to be doing that day. Pegasus Riding Academy provides exercise and physical therapy to disabled people, ranging from children to adults. Early on in the day, we

prepared the horses for their day of galloping by combing their manes and cleaning their horseshoes. Later on, we walked beside the horses mounted by mentally or physically disabled children around 5-10 years old. We supported either their back or leg and make sure they had adequate balance while on the horses, as the instructors and staff from Pegasus guided and encouraged the horses and instructed the kids on how to sit and what commands to give the horses. Different riding positions, styles, and tempos were implemented ranging from the rider sitting backwards, in sideways, crawling position and a slow gallop, to a mild trot. We had to keep up with the pace of the horse and change in position of the riders. All the staff at Pegasus seemed happy and enthusiastic at what they did. They always had smiles, and laughed and engaged with the kids, knowing them all by name and asking how their week went, how their friends and families were doing and what's new in their life. This project is different and rewarding to our club.

On February 7th Thiel College Circle K went to St. Paul’s Nursing Home, in Meadville, PA. During our visit, we distributed Valentines Day Cards that members had previously made at another service

project. After some members handed them out to the residents, we visited with them for a little bit. TCCK’ers were able to meet with the residents one on one and got to know them a little bit better. It was a great experience for everyone who participated and we plan to go back to St. Paul’s to play Bingo with them in the near future.

By Vice President Amanda Raymond Near the beginning of the semester, Lycoming Circle K co-sponsored a spaghetti dinner at our local Salvation Army in Williamsport. The Salvation helped us get the food for our dinner, while we cooked and served our guests. This was a way for us to raise money for our club. However, we were so successful that we decided to donate half of our

profit to the Salvation Army. Overall, we raised over four hundred dollars. We had over twenty volunteers help us out, including some help from our Kiwanis Club. It was very successful event for everyone involved!

By Vice President Diane Williams On December 8, 2007 the Circle K at Pittsburgh-Greensburg decided to have a holiday party at Weatherwood

Manor, which is an assisted living home for the elderly. A group of fifteen students participated on the day of the event, but many more people contributed in the planning and set up of the event. The program was called “Weatherwood Wonderland” and this event took place of their Holiday party. The evening started out with caroling led by two of our students. After the caroling we had a variety of painted wooden ornaments for the residents to choose and write their name on. Once they picked the one they wanted we hung them on their tree. Near the end of the party, all of the residents also received a small gift basket including hot chocolate, a candy cane, and other goodies.

On February 16th Mansfield Circle K hosted our annual Literacy Day at the Mansfield Free Public Library. Kids from grades

Kindergarten to Third could make a variety of arts and crafts with the theme “Under the Sea.” Several children made pasta crabs, jellyfish out of paper plates, and mini aquariums out of water bottles. Circle K members helped the kids assemble their projects and even made one for themselves. Goldfish crackers were given out as a snack and special prizes were also distributed. Everyone involved with the project had a lot of fun. With the success of the past two years under our belts, we hope next year’s Literacy Day will be bigger and better!

By Vice President Hannah Beach We had a very successful project in December. We received letters from all the first and second grade children at Lee Park Elementary School in the Hanover Area School District. We spent many hours as a group writing letters back to each and every child who wrote a letter to Santa. Our group wrote positive messages encouraging them to continue to do well in school and to stay on Santa's "nice list." Our Circle K also decorated each letter with lots of drawings and glitter. Each child received a candy cane with their letter as well. This project meant a lot to the kids, but it did a lot more for our group. Being a new club this year at King's College, we are still trying to work out a lot of the problems and obstacles that come with being a forming club. Working together on a project that we all enjoyed and appreciated was great for morale and bonding! We listened to Christmas music, ordered pizza and soda, and really got to know each other. I think it gave everyone extra motivation and reason to keep participating and coming up with ideas for our next projects, some of which we are working on now.

One idea that is sometimes overlooked is the adoption of an animal. Through the World Wildlife Fund, individuals and organizations are able to adopt an animal that is an endangered species. Some examples on animals waiting to be adopted are polar bears, clown fish, sea lions, and pandas. You, or your club, could also adopt a plot of land in the rainforest trhough the National Arbor Day Foundation. Another idea is to go into elementary school classrooms and teach children about nature and conservation by playing Environmental Jeopardy. Important dates to keep in mind that are coming up this semester are:

National Environmental Education Week: April 13, 2008- WWWApril 19, 2008

Earth Day: April 22, 2008 Arbor Day: April 25, 2008 UN World Environment Day: June 5, 2008

IT Chair Bryan (continued): can throw at me. I am looking forward to seeing all of you in Kiwanis. K-Family Chair Amanda: It has been my pleasure serving you this past year and I had a wonderful time traveling across the state to see all of your different service projects and leadership events. I hope you have all equally enjoyed the different things we planned for you. It is sad to see it come to a close and “PACK” it up, but I am sure next year we will all keep on with the enthusiasm! MDE Chair Jess: I can not tell you how happy it has made me to serve as your MDE chair this past year. We have done so many wonderful things in such a short amount of time, and I know that Pennsylvania Circle K will continue to serve the world in many capacities. I may be leaving Circle K, but I will always have amazing memories thanks to you guys! I wish everyone the best of luck and never forget how many people you help out everyday. Service Chair Andrew: Although my time serving as your Service Chair was brief, what fun it was. There were many miles traveled, long weekends, and great people and events! I can’t thank you enough for doing what you do, you are an inspiration to many. Special Events Chair Dan: I really hope that you had a fantastic year serving and leading, because I know I did. Thank you Millersville for all of your support this past year. I couldn't be more proud to be a part of such an amazing group of people. I am also grateful for the opportunity to serve on the District Board. From all of the car trips to the overkill of Dirty Pop, I had an experience I will never forget.

By Sub-Regional Representative Steph Wieland Circle K International Board members live, eat, and breathe Circle K, well I can’t speak for everyone, but I know that I sure do! Right now the International Board is gearing up for the upcoming launch of the new website! It was really important to the Board to make the website more user-friendly, and less of an eyesore, so I hope that you enjoy it just as much as I have anticipated it. Other things we are excited about are the 2nd annual Kiwanis One Day and the first ever Six Cents Day! Kiwanis One Day is being held on April 5. This day is one day set aside for all of the Kiwanis Family to get together and

perform service. I hope that each you spend this day with as many branches of the Kiwanis Family as possible. The time to start planning is now! Talk to your sponsoring Kiwanis Club and see if they have anything planned, if not, your Circle K club should plan an awesome event for all to share in. The first annual Six Cents Day is occurring in conjunction with World Water Day, which is on March 22. The Six Cents Initiative is the fundraising initiative that the CKI took on this year. This Initiative focuses on providing rehydration salts to those children that it need to survive dehydration spells. Every six cents we raise is enough to buy one oral rehydration salt packet! Our goal is to raise $70,001 by the end of International Convention in Denver this year, helping out more than 116,000 children! For more information, check out: www.unicefusa.org/circlek. You can also help out by logging onto Facebook and voting for the Six Cents Initiative, which is up on Razoo for a $1,000 grant! The link is: http://apps.facebook.com/speedgranting/proposal.php?pid=566. Right around the corner is the District Convention season, and if you think District Conventions is fun, try an International Convention! This year ICON is being held in Denver, Colorado at the beautiful Adam’s Mark Hotel from August 6th through 9th. ICON is a great time to network with Circle K’ers from across the country and world, and to learn more about our awesome organization. This year the schedule has been completely revamped, so get pumped for some awesome surprises! If four days isn’t enough fun for you, then you should consider attending this year’s Large Scale Service Project, being held on August 2nd through 6th, also in Denver. This year we will be installing three beach areas near Harvey Park, and we will be working with Denver Parks and Recreation in order to accomplish this! Check back on http://www.circlek.org/convention for more details on these awesome events! You can also get more information from the On to International Convention (OTIC) Chairs Brett Cutright, Amanda Marfisi, and Mindy Bozick.
