A spot of tea in the afternoon soaked up with a slice of cake is truly a treat. Its traditionally English roots stemmed from Anna, the Duchess of Bedfordshire who found she was getting hungry at around 4’oclock in the afternoon so she would request for tea, bread and butter along with cakes to be brought to her room. It’s time for afternoon tea at Hanbury Manor.

Following on from their hugely successful ‘Picasso and the School of Paris’ Show held last May, the Salvador Dali exhibition will take place from 24th – 31st March at Gallery Rouge.

Visit Hatfield House this Spring and experience the fascinating 400 years of history, culture and entertainment. Events take place in Hatfield Park throughout the year. They are usually held in Stable Yard, Palace Green, Elephant Dell or on the Queen Elizabeth Oak Field.

The NGS or National Gardens Scheme raises money to support nursing, caring and gardening charities through open garden days and is particularly active in Hertfordshire. This year, the NGS reaches its 85th anniversary and will be celebrating its 1927 origins when 609 gardens ‘of quality and interest’ around the country opened their gates to the public for ‘a shilling a head’ as a fundraiser for the Queen’s Nursing Institute.

This gives you just a small taste of exciting eventsand articles featured in this month’s issue...

The NGS or National Gardens Scheme raises money to support nursing, caring and

gardening charities through open garden days and is particularly active in Hertfordshire. This year, the NGS reaches its 85th anniversary and will be celebrating its 1927 origins when 609 gardens ‘of quality and interest’ around the country opened their gates to the public for ‘a shilling a head’ as a fundraiser for the Queen’s Nursing Institute. Since then, the NGS has grown with the support of garden owners and volunteers to become the single largest benefactor for not only the Queen’s Nursing Institute, but also Macmillan, Marie Curie and Help The Hospices. Other beneficiaries of the NGS include

Cross Roads Care, Perennial (The Gardeners’ Royal Benevolent Fund) and the National Trust.

Of the 609 founder gardens, 120 are opening for the NGS this year to celebrate the 85th anniversary and here in Hertfordshire, we are lucky enough to have 3 of these wonderful gardens to visit, while at the same time supporting these very deserving and vital causes.

The West Garden at Hatfield House offers an early season opening on Saturday 31st March (11am–5pm) where you can enjoy bluebells and wildflowers in the beech and oak Woodland Garden with its nineteenth century rhododendrons that

flourish alongside more recently planted shrubs. More formal garden styles are to be found in the Old Palace Garden with its box borders and mini maze, and linked by a pleached lime walk, the Sundial Garden features the recently installed Longitude Dial, surrounded by herbs-filled planters.

Further north, in Whitwell, another garden with royal connections opens for the NGS on Sunday 22nd April (2–7pm) in the form of St Paul’s Walden Bury. Birthplace of the late Queen Mother and home to the Bowes-Lyons since the 1700s, this spectacular Grade 1 listed formal woodland garden features long undulating rides flanked by clipped beech hedges and offering

views to temples, statues and a large lake. Spring flowers flourish on the banks above the lake and in the woods, being allowed to seed for the following year before being cut back. The 60 acre space at St Paul’s Walden Bury has opened for the NGS every year since 1927, offering its garden visitors a unique insight into 18th century garden design with a particularly French influence.

The third 1927 garden open for the NGS in Hertfordshire is Benington Lordship located just to the east of Stevenage. A midsummer opening on Sunday 7th June (12–5pm) provides visitors with an array of garden areas to discover around the Queen Ann manor house. This 7 acre garden created on the site

of a Norman castle takes a steep angled hillside into its stride as it rolls down and blends seamlessly with the surrounding parkland and lakes. The earthworks and ruined keep of the castle provide much of the structure and form of the garden and weaving paths and steps reveal planting surprises around every corner. The blend of formal box areas and neatly maintained hedges with the more relaxed herbaceous borders and the bountiful kitchen garden offers a variety of interest sure to be enjoyed by every kind of gardener.

More information on these and other NGS garden openings can be found at www.ngs.org.uk.

Museum of St AlbansFounded as the Hertfordshire County Museum in 1898, the Museum of St Albans tells the story

of St Albans from the departure of the Romans to the present day. In the medieval gallery you can find out about Alban, Britain’s first Christian martyr, and the Abbey that grew up around the site of his martyrdom. See objects used by people in medieval St Albans and learn how they lived. More fascinating and colourful displays continue the story of how St Albans developed from a small market town into a bustling commuter city. Special displays with a wide range of objects illustrate everyday life in Victorian St Albans. A particular attraction is the regular programme of special exhibitions, covering a whole range of subjects from Barbie dolls to the Egyptians. There is also a wide range of activities for people of all ages. Hatfield Road, St Albans AL1 3RR Telephone: 01727 819340 Email: [email protected] Website: www.stalbansmuseums.org.uk

Roman TheatreThe Roman Theatre of Verulamium is unique. Built in about 140AD it is the only example of its kind in Britain, being a theatre with a stage rather than an Amphitheatre. Initially, the arena would have been used for anything from religious processions and dancing, to wrestling, armed combat and wild beast shows. From

about 180AD the stage came into greater use and the auditorium extended. By about 300AD, after some redevelopment work, the Theatre could seat 2000 spectators. The ruins one can see today were unearthed in 1847. Subsequent excavations have revealed a row of shop foundations, a Roman Villa and a secret shrine, all thought to date from the First Century. Clock TowerBuilt between 1403 and 1412, the Clock Tower is the only medieval town belfry in England. The tower with its fine bell has survived over 600 years of use. The Clock Tower was first and foremost a political statement. The townspeople used it to assert their freedom, power and wealth in the face of the premier Benedictine Abbey of England (now St Albans Cathedral). The Tower allowed the town to sound its own hours and, until 1863, the Curfew. It also gave the alarm in case of ‘fire or fray’ – its bell rang out for the first Battle of St Albans during the Wars of the Roses in 1455. Today you can climb the 93 steps to the top of the Tower and enjoy magnificent views of the Cathedral, Roman Verulamium and the historic city of St Albans. High Street, St Albans. Afternoon tea events at Hanbury ManorA spot of tea in the afternoon soaked up with a slice of cake is truly a treat. Its traditionally English roots stemmed from Anna, the Duchess of Bedfordshire who found she was getting hungry at around 4’oclock in the afternoon so she would request for tea, bread and butter along with cakes to be brought to her room. This became a habit and she began inviting her friends to join her and this soon became a socially fashionable occasion through the 1800s.

Adopted from the 18th Century, afternoons have once again been dominated with teeming teapots and its fashionable status has been reinstalled. Venues such as Hanbury Manor, A Marriott Hotel & Country Club based in Ware, Hertfordshire offer traditional afternoon tea servings from 2pm

starting from £23 per person. The Afternoon Tea’s take place in Oak Hall which in the winter is a particularly enchanting room with the roaring fires alight to keep cosy.

The afternoon tea arrangement consists of an extensive tea menu including the traditional English breakfast and Earl Grey to exotic brews from India and China. The tea is served with a three tiered silver stand of dainty finger sandwiches including; ham and cheese on multiseed bread, smoked salmon and cream cheese on granary bread, cucumber on dill bread and egg mayonnaise and cress on white bread, freshly baked raisin and plain scones served with strawberry jam and clotted cream along with cakes and pastries prepared by the pastry chef on the day.

FEATURE

With its popularity through 2011, Hanbury Manor has adapted its fabulous traditional Afternoon Tea’s into themed events that consist of traditional afternoon tea served with a glass of bubbly on arrival and live music throughout to allow you to drift away, relax and unwind while sipping on your favourite cuppa.

Get a Piece of the Mansion!Majestically ensconced at the heart of Wall Hall, Aldenham, is the iconic ‘Mansion House’, formerly the home of eminent dignitaries including Joseph Kennedy. Latterly renovated and reconfigured by Octagon Developments Ltd around five years ago, whilst constructing their award-winning masterpiece creation of 125 homes, this idyllic property is peacefully surrounded by parkland, golf course and greenbelt countryside. The Mansion House retains many original features, both inside and out, including imposing front entrance with hammer-beam ceiling and original panelling, but now has the added convenience

of secure, underground parking with personal lift access to the communal hallway.

Now comprising seven highly individual homes within this grand building, one of the generously appointed apartments, occupying ground, first and second floors with basement ‘office’, has just come to the market. Originally the south wing, each room overlooks its own private garden and affords stunning views across the tranquil countryside setting. The present owners have reconfigured the former layout, installing a bespoke ‘Mark Wilkinson’ beautifully crafted kitchen/diner of some

29’ x 23’ to a former reception with floor to ceiling windows on two sides, leading through to the spacious sitting room of a further 26’ x 23’ – again, featuring twin floor to ceiling French doors to garden. In keeping with this stylish and contemporary layout, the apartment now boasts a cinema room, and the original ‘silver vault’ basement, is the study. Occupying the first floor and approached by sweeping staircase, are the three principle bedroom suites, with the Master enjoying double aspect windows, built in bespoke wardrobes, and over-sized luxury bathroom. The Guest Suite is indulged with walk-in dressing

room leading to bathroom, and Bedroom 3 extends to 18’ x 17’10 with spacious ensuite bathroom. For added convenience, a fully fitted utility room is tucked away at the end of this floor. Continuing upwards to the second floor, Bedroom 4 measures approximately 24’ x 24’ – embraced as a Games Room, with added advantage of ensuite bathroomand storage.

Rarely available, a truly outstanding and expansive home offering tremendous living and entertaining accommodation, lavishly presented throughout, with every attention to detail for today’s modern lifestyle.

The Haberdashers’ Aske’s Boys’ Preparatory SchoolNurturing Excellence

Haberdashers’ Boys’ Prep Schoolis the best in the nation yet againThe only boys’ prep school ever to win the prestigious Sunday Times Award

The Habs Community have been celebrating thisacademic year since the Prep School was awardedthe “Sunday Times Independent Prep School of theYear 2011”. This is an amazing achievement asHabs Prep also won the same accolade in 2006 andis the first and only boys’ prep school in England towin the award twice.

Yvonne Mercer, who has beenHeadteacher for 14 years, said “We were absolutely thrilled toreceive this news which is a superreward for the hard work of boys, staff and parents”.

"Haberdashers' Aske's Boys' Schoolis a thoroughly deserving winner ofour School of the Year award. Forthe past six years, its boys have ranked it either first orsecond in the country in terms of its outright academicperformance - remarkable consistency at a remarkable

level of achievement. It is top of theform again this year. Virtually all theboys leave this exceptional prep schoolwith academic ability at least two yearsahead of their actual age. Allied to theopportunities open to them to develop

through the wealth of extra-curricularactivities, it made the decision tomake our award to Haberdashers' oneof the easier choices for our judges."

Alastair McCall, editor of The SundayTimes Schools Guide, Parent Power

The Prep boys celebrated theirachievement with doughnuts and juice, and will receive a commemorativeblazer badge as a keepsake of this

most momentous achievement.

Yvonne Mercer, Head of the Preparatory School

“To have been awarded thistitle once is remarkable; tohave received it twice istruly extraordinary.”Peter B Hamilton, Headmaster,Haberdashers’ Aske’s Boys’ School.

Gallery RougeART

Salvador Dali exhibitionMARCH 24TH TO 31ST

Following on from their hugely successful ‘Picasso and the School of Paris’ Show held last May, the focus of

this event will be on one of the most influential Spanish artists of a generation. Whilst Dali has been described as

a maverick and a genius in the same breath, his impact on the modern art movement is unquestionable. Both

Dalí’s extraordinary talent and eccentric personality helped him to rise above the rest of the twentieth century

surrealists. This is an opportunity to acquire signed limited edition work which would ordinarily be inaccessible.

John-Mark Gleadow exhibitionMAY 12TH - 20TH 2012

Hyper realist painter John-Mark has taken the artworld by storm with his stunningly detailed depictions in a book spine cover format. Bridging the gap between portraiture and literature, John-Marks work demonstrates exceptional skill (each piece taking months to create) and the gallery are delighted to be holding his first ever European exhibition. John-Mark will be flying across from the US especially for the event.

Never one to stand still, it will come as no surprise to learn that Gallery Rouge have a full schedule of

Gallery Rouge has firmly established itself as the place you must visit first should you be looking for artwork for your home or office. The selection of artwork is the largest and widest in Hertfordshire, as the gallery is uniquely positioned in representing work from;

DeMontfort Fine Art (who represent household names in Fabian Perez, Henderson Cisz, Doug Hyde, Rolf Harris and Todd White to name but a few)

Washington Green Fine Art (representatives of Alexander Miller,

Kal Gajoum exhibitionJULY 21ST - 29TH 2012

Following on from his sell-out exhibition in March 2010, Gallery Rouge is delighted to be welcoming Kal back to the UK for a highly anticipated show to be held in central London. Kal’s palette knife oil paintings have become incredibly sought after since his tenure as the Official Artist of the 2010 Winter Olympics, and this event will coincide with the 2012 Summer Olympics. As his exclusive European representatives, Gallery Rouge will be flying Kal Gajoum over from Canada to make a personal appearance and meet with collectors.

Kerry Darlington exhibitionSEPTEMBER 15TH - 23RD 2012

To mark Gallery Rouge’s fifth anniversary they are thrilled to announce that the UK’s top selling artist Kerry Darlington will

be coming to the gallery in St Albans. Gallery Rouge held Kerry Darlington’s first ever solo exhibition and this event is in recognition

of their special relationship. Due to her work commitments Kerry rarely has time for events, so this is indeed rather special.

Barry Hilton exhibitionNOVEMBER 3RD - 11TH 2012

Landscape painter Barry Hilton will be in attendance later in the year with a strong collection of original oil paintings. Barry’s

ability to capture atmospheric backdrops has catapulted him to the forefront of the modern landscape genre. Barry will be

holding only two exhibitions in 2012, and specifically approached Gallery Rouge, such is the profile of the gallery.

T he vibrant and internationally renowned London Fashion

Week is always exciting and inspirational, and last month’s event proved to be just that.

London Fashion Week presented another unrivalled opportunity for both established designers and newcomers to present their latest collections. A constantly buzzing key event for those who haven’t got the patience to wait until the latest fashion designs and stylish fashion trends make it into the fashion magazines.

The magic of London Fashion Week is not merely thanks to the fashion designers’ and fashion stylists’ cutting-edge collections but the media excitement that accompanies them. The allure of the show is exceptional and London Fashion Week continues to be the top fashion event pulling visitors from every corner of the globe.

It’s a week where designers are free to create at will and experiment with new trends for clothing. The world watches as fashion history is made. While we are all thinking about our autumn wardrobes and digging out our winter jumpers in an attempt to stay warm, designers were showcasing this year’s Autumn/Winter collections during last month’s London Fashion Week.

The first lady of British fashion today made her appearance at this season’s London Fashion Week. Samantha Cameron graced the front row of the Christopher Kane catwalk show at central London’s One New Change shopping centre. The Prime Minister’s wife, who is ambassador to the British Fashion Council (BFC), was spotted wearing a Joseph trouser suit and a Jonathan Saunders green shirt. She also sported a pair of wedged black high shoes showing off a small blue tattoo on her right ankle. Mrs Cameron chatted with BFC executives before watching the autumn/winter collection.

So who else was taking the front row seats at

London Fashion Week?Celebrities from the worlds of

sport, music and film watched the Burberry Prorsum show at Kensington Gardens in London. Rap star Will.i.am was there and Hollywood actress Kate Bosworth was over from her native Los Angeles for the event. Former ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ contestant Holly Valance attended with her property tycoon fiancé Nick Candy. Singer Will Young wrapped up in a cosy cashmere knit.Boxer Amir Khan made up the sportspeople on the front row......along with former athlete Denise Lewis.

Stella McCartney’s show proved her one of the most influential designers in the world. Not many had a guest list like this one: Rihanna, Kate Moss, Jamie Hince, Amber Valletta, Shalom Harlow - and that was just the seating plan of Stella’s own table.

Much table hopping went on as Yasmin Le Bon chatted to Paul Whitehouse, Minnie Driver caught up with Mario Testino, Richard E Grant met Alison Mosshart, Jo Whiley caught up with British singing sensation Katy B - it was a case of who wasn’t there.

Topshop Unique always draws a celebrity-packed front row. Alexa Chung looked casual but stylish in classic navy jeans and coat. Girls Aloud singer, make-up entrepreneur and dedicated follower of fashion Nicola Roberts also attended the Topshop Unique show.

Actress and designer Sadie Frost also made an appearance at the Vivienne Westwood Red Label show looking summery in salmon pink.

At Aquascutumn, singer Dionne Bromfield mingled with One Directon’s Harry Styles , and comedian James Corden and his fiancé Julia Carey .

Alexa Chung and Pixie Geldof supported their friend Henry Holland by sitting in on his House of Holland show.

So what we will be wearing this Autumn and Winter? Here are just a selection of those names that hit the catwalk!

Harpenden Skin Clinic

The Harpenden Skin Clinic is a medically-led service, providing a variety of aesthetic and non-surgical treatments within the relaxed environment of Harpenden’s prestigious ‘Breathing Space’ Spa. Headed by Janne Maheson – an aesthetic nurse practitioner, with extensive experience and expertise in aesthetic medicine and skin care – the clinic is committed to maintaining a discreet and ethical service, focused upon the individual needs of their clients. It also promotes a firm belief in natural looking results; achieved by meticulous client care and consultation, plus the use of leading technology and a carefully selected range of advanced products.

One of the most popular treatments carried out at the

Harpenden Skin Clinic is the ground-breaking pain free Soprano XL Laser Hair Removal system - a multi-award winning procedure, with an overwhelming patient-satisfaction record.

The Soprano XL is the first effective laser hair removal procedure to be FDA approved as “painless” and has been shown to provide the most successful and consistent results for every skin tone. This is due to the efficiency of the Soprano XL laser technology, which features the best “Gold Standard” laser in the industry. It emits a powerful and continual wave of energy, but first heats the sub-dermal layers of the skin to provide more protection to the area. The model also features a dual cooling mechanism for additional comfort and features

and effective laser hair removal treatment than previously available on the market, but at no additional charge. In fact, as fewer sessions are typically required to achieve permanent hair removal, Soprano XL has become a much more cost effective option for laser hair removal.

The Harpenden Skin Clinic is currently offering Soprano XL Laser Hair Removal via a new easy payment scheme with 0% interest. You will also get a sixth session free of charge when you buy a course of five sessions. For more information please visit www.harpendenskinclinic.com or phone 01582 462223 to schedulea free consultation.

a novel sweeping motion to help destroy hair follicles gradually and more safely.

This IN-Motion sweeping technology means that large areas of skin can be covered quickly, but without the risk of missing spots of hair growth or reducing the effectiveness of the procedure. Hair removal sessions are therefore quicker with the Soprano XL laser and so ideal for people with busy lives and for those wanting large areas of hair removal. The treatment is available for almost any part of the body and offers a range of programmes to accommodate the client’s personal needs, such as the sensitivity or colour of their skin and a variety of hair types.

In response to huge demand, Carolina Brennan, owner of The Anti Ageing Clinic in Park Street, has opened The Powder Room in Radlett. She invited me to visit her in the salon, which is situated in Best in Beauty, to find out more about it and to experience a treatment.

“The Powder Room is a young, trendy salon for clients who are interested in high quality, professional, beauty treatments on-the-go,” explains Carolina. “Our clinic in Park Street is incredibly popular and it was a great decision to move there a year ago. However, I felt that it was time we were able to offer the option of a quick brow shape, a set of false lashes or a nail treatment; particularly for those clients who want to maintain their groomed appearance but are looking for a more express service with a professional, experienced therapist. Amy Best’s hair salon is perfectly situated in the heart of Radlett for those busy people

who want to stop by when they are in town and it’s already proving to be extremely popular.”

The Powder Room is situated within Best in Beauty, a hair salon on the Aldenham Road, between Prezzo and The Red Lion and just minutes from Radlett train station. Boasting a beautiful, luxury treatment room and an open brow and nail bar, the Powder Room is decorated in deep mulberry with silver, shabby chic mirrors to give a luxurious, celebrity feel.

The salon offers a range of specialist brow, eyelash and nail

treatments as well as waxing, facials and spray tans. The salon is also launching a brand new treatment called ‘The Celebrity Brow Lift’ - a non-surgical brow lift, designer shape and tint which Carolina expects to go down a storm in Radlett.

I was offered a special package comprising a Gelish two-week manicure, Swarowski Crystal Pedicure and the Celebrity Brow Lift. When she was finished, I felt and looked fit to walk the Red Carpet. I may be a bit late for the Oscars, but I’m going to have to go out

tonight and show off my fantastic nails and the wonders she has done with my tired, sagging eyes!

For more information on beauty treatments, please contact The Powder Room on 01923 853 656 or email [email protected]

The Powder Room offers a wide range of treatments, including Medical Microdermabrasion, CACI Non Surgical facelifts, Dermologica Age Smart, Chroma White, Medi Bac, Clean Start for teenagers and Shave for men on a drop-in or appointment basis. It is based at Best in Beauty, 30 Aldenham Road, Radlett, WD7 8AX

Sweating is one of the most important ways in which the

body loses heat, however, people with hyperhidrosis (Excessive sweating) produce sweat in amounts far greater than needed to control their temperature. It is thought that about 0.5% of the population (or about 1 person in 200) has some form of hyperhidrosis. Hyperhidrosis is a treatable medical condition which occurs regardless of environmental surroundings – people with hyperhidrosis sweat profusely nearly all day, every day. ere are two main types; Primary (focal) hyperhidrosis can a ect one or more body areas, most often the palms of hands, armpits, soles of the feet or face, and sometimes the groin in men and under the breasts in women. Secondary hyperhidrosis, however, is generalized, typically involving the whole body and caused by an underlying condition like diabetes or medication such as anti-depressants.

HOW IS HYPERHIDROSIS TREATED? Initially, simple self-help measures may be useful:• Wear Cool clothing • Avoiding certain foods which may trigger sweating ( such as ca einated products, chocolate, spicy or sour foods, hot foods, alcohol, foods or drinks containing citric acid)• Reducing stress, tension or anxiety • Increased attention to personal hygiene

TREATMENTS: Topical treatment with Aluminium chloride some roll-on or aerosol anti-perspirants are the rst-line treatment for Axilliary (underarm) hyperhidrosis. e e ects last only for 48 hours and the deodorants can cause irritation to the underarms. e exception to this is if the excessive sweating symptoms occur during, or are exacerbated by, known anxiety-provoking situations such as during presentations at work. In these cases, treating the underlying anxiety is the best option.

Iontophoresis is the passage of a weak electric current through a water bath. e area a ected by sweating is immersed in the water and electrically charged particles clock the activity of sweat glands. When eff ective, this lasts for three-four days but can become longer with repeated use. With correct education and training, people can often perform this procedure at home.

ere is a variety of drug

treatments available. Some of these a ect the body’s entire nervous system and side e ects such as a dry mouth, drowsiness and constipation can be troublesome. Where sweating is made worse by stress or anxiety, other drugs (beta blockers) may be used with less troublesome side e ects.

Injections of botulinum toxin (type A) into the skin has been shown to be a very e ective treatment for all types of focal hyperhidrosis, where people have not adequately responded to topical antiperspirant therapy or if the side e ects of such therapy are intolerable. e U.S. Food & Drug Administration

(FDA) approved Botox for the treatment of severe primary axillary hyperhidrosis in patients unable to obtain relief using antiperspirants. Treatment involves multiple tiny injections of botulinum toxin (type A) (botox) under each armpit. E ects start within the rst week after treatment and last for an average of seven months before further injections are required. Side e ects are rarely troublesome.

WHERE CAN I GET HELP IF I SUFFER FROM HYPERHIDROSIS? Your GP will be able to advise you on the treatments detailed in this article. Many cosmetic surgery or medi-spa clinics also o er injection treatment with botulinum toxin (type A).

e International Hyperhidrosis Society is the only non-pro t, independent, global organisation that increases awareness and understanding of excessive sweating, improves access to hyperhidrosis treatments and o ers education for medical professionals in order to improve the diagnosis and care of excessive sweating.

MYTH: Hair extensions Damage your HairFACT: When hair extensions are applied correctly there isvirtually no reason why they would damage your hair, thousands of women have used hair extensions to grow theirown hair to a desired length with no adverse effectswhatsoever. However, that is not to say everybody's hair is suitable for hairextensions. At Rapunzel the safety of your hair is taken veryseriously hence a free consultation is offered along with acomplimentary check up appointment.

MYTH: You can't have hair extensions if your hair is fineFACT: In fact, many women with fine hair choose to use hairextensions to add extra volume. Extensions can be done invery tiny size to be virtually undetectable .

MYTH: You have to dye your hair to the same colour as theextensions.FACT: This would not happen at Rapunzel as every hair colouris kept in stock all of the time.

MYTH: People can tell when you are wearing hair extensionsFACT: When they are done properly by a skilled Technician, placed in the right places with the correct amount ofextensions used & expertly cut in, hair extensions lookcompletely like your own hair and undetectable.

MYTH: You can't keep up your highlights & root colour whenthe hair extensions are inFACT: Actually you can still do highlights, you just work aroundthe extensions. When dying roots the colour can be applied asit normally would. At Rapunzel once you have our extensionsin we can look after all your hairdressing needs if you wouldlike us to.

MYTH: You can't brush & style easily with hair extensionsFACT: As long as the right brush is used (supplied by RapunzelLtd), then you can brush right into and through the roots withno damage to your own hair or the extensions. You can alsouse straightening irons, curling tongs & heated rollers as longas you are careful to avoid the bonds.

osing your job can shake you up emotionally. How

do you deal with it? Feel rejected and useless? Angry?

How do you sustain your energy for job-seeking? How can you be relaxed and self-confident in an interview?

Here are some guidelines for skillfully handling this emotional challenge faced by so many:

1. Write about how you feel.

Include all the things you would like to have said to your previous bosses but didn’t. Continue expressing your feelings over and over until you feel emptied. Do this once a day for as long as it takes. Or anytime you feel emotionally frustrated. This helps overcome emotional trauma/grief, begin to heal, and stop feeling like a victim.

Do pleasant, enjoyable things each day. Do what revitalizes you! Positive emotions expand your problem-solving skills and strengthen your resiliency.

2. Resiliency starts with adapting quickly to the new reality.

Dwelling on ‘If only…’ keeps

you stuck in the past and is discouraging. Think about the situation as if you chose it to happen at this time in your life.

Why is it good that this happened?

What unexpected opportunity has leaving your job opened up for you?

3. Form a small support group.

Meet up with others in similar positions. This reduces the ‘shame’ often created by redundancy. Discuss some of the following:

What did you enjoy about your job?

What do you miss the most? What do you not miss? What is one of your best accomplishments?

4. Write a detailed description of what you do well and practice talking about your reliable strengths.

Describe specific projects or assignments you feel proud about. Overcome false modesty! Telling others about your reliable strengths and skills is not bragging.

5. Make finding a job your job.

You are not on holiday. If you need a break then set the date when you start looking for work. Get out and talk with people. Most jobs are never advertised publicly. Focus on the employer’s needs, more than your own. No one except a relative will hire you because you need a job. Find out what is happening in places where you would like to work. Be persistent. Contact a career

coach or research the best way to present yourself and your CV.

6. Take creative action.

A good illustration is the story of a red-headed young man who answered an ad for an office assistant during the great depression. When he showed up for the interview he found a long line of applicants ahead of him. Sizing up the situation, he went to the nearest Western Union office and had the following telegram delivered to the employment interviewer:

“Don’t hire anyone until you talk to the red-headed kid at the end of

the line.”

The interviewer came out of his office with the telegram clutched in his hand. He found the man and took him into the office. The interviewer said, “You are exactly the sort of assistant we need here,” and hired him.

Not everyone could fall in love with a house stuck in the 1970s complete with cigar stained walls, chintzy carpets and dodgy coloured bathrooms but for the Bessler family, it presented the perfect challenge. “We wanted a project; something that added value and that we could put our own mark on,” Sally remembers. “There was barely any natural light and the old owner had ripped out nearly all of the original features. As a project manager however, it was the perfect opportunity for me to put my skills to a rewarding use.”  Confident they could turn this Victorian house into a fabulous family home and with a new baby on the way, the couple set about choosing a building team.

At first, the Besslers anticipated using the building company from their previous project to realise their vision. After spotting L&E (Lofts and Extensions) in a local paper however, they felt they had nothing to lose by getting them round to quote for the work.  “The surveyor from L&E arrived and instilled a lot of confidence in me.  He was amiable and very patient as there were a lot of points I wanted to clarify,” Sally comments. “We also liked the fact they came as a team and so could oversee the whole project rather than us needing additional contractors.  They then took us to see five completed L&E

projects where all of the owners we met were obviously so proud of what the builders had created.  This gave us the confidence to choose L&E for our own build.”

With the building team in place, work started almost immediately. Structurally, the plan was to remodel and extend the boxy ground floor area to open and lighten the space while incorporating a utility, cloakroom and storage area. The rear extension would be followed through to the first floor to house a large master bedroom and en-suite with vaulted ceilings and skylights. Although not vital for their immediate needs, the couple chose to incorporate

a loft extension in the build to maximise the home’s potential and avoid revisiting the project at a later stage.

The biggest challenge they faced was getting planning permission for the large, two-storey rear extension.  While awaiting this, work started on permitted development including the loft conversion and internal work.  Work progressed quickly.  “They worked tirelessly and we built up a really good rapport with the team.  The fact they were so quick meant that sometimes we weren’t quite ready for them and had to make decisions quickly in order to keep up.” Sally comments.

At last, the vital rear

extension permissions came through.  “We immediately contacted L&E to tell them,” Sally remembers. “The next day we visited the house to find an unusual amount of light coming through the front door.” Sally laughs. “They had taken down the whole of the rear of the house – it was so exciting and very efficient.  Our next door neighbours were so amazed they even filmed it happening.”

Living and working in Canary Wharf, the couple were unable to be on site for much of the time. “We came down every Saturday to meet with the builders.  I was pregnant too so it was exhausting, but they were very flexible and waited for us to arrive even after they should have left. Our neighbours commented on how good they were and how considerate,” Sally remembers. The foreman also made suggestions on how to improve the original design. “Our architect had put in plans where the supports would need to jut out from the wall.  L&Es builders suggested that these beams could be taken back to give us a flush wall. It made the look so much better for us and was above and beyond the call of duty.”

Sitting in their bright and spacious kitchen it’s hard to imagine the unwelcoming, confined space that this once was. The light, airy feel is emphasised throughout the house with white walls, warm oak flooring and skylights

while contemporary style furniture makes the most of the space. The kitchen-diner is one of the many defining features of this build with its bi-folding doors and rooflights allowing light to flood in and creating an organic connection between inside and out. The vaulted ceilings in the bedroom and bathroom meanwhile add instant character and drama. Upstairs the loft extension allows plenty of room for visiting guests. The redesigned space has given them a whole new way of living, replacing boxy rooms with a layout that flows into workable linked space. “We love it and it couldn’t have come at a better time with our first baby’s arrival four weeks later,” Sally says.

So were they pleased they choose L&E to complete the build? “Yes, there were so many good things. At first we were worried as they were a new team to us. Going with L&E, a team we didn’t know, rather than our old builders who we had been happy with was a big risk.” That risk paid off however. “L&E were professional and efficient.  They were patient and flexible when we slowed them down. We would definitely work with them again.”

With a new baby at home there may not be much time for relaxing but the Besslers now have a calm, tranquil haven to call their own and the odd occasion to get a moments peace. “Lying our baby down to watch him gaze happily up through the skylights in itself is priceless!”

Dreaming of Bedroom BlissTo mark the fact that March is the Sleep Council’s National Bed Month, we’ve asked the famous and celebrated to reveal their secrets for a beautiful bedroom. Be inspired by the founder of The White Company, Chrissie Rucker; designers Zandra Rhodes and Rachel Ashwell; the presenter of TV’s Location, Location, Location, Kirstie Allsopp, and pop superstar Kylie Minogue.

Rachel AshwellShe’s the designer whose name is synonymous with the trend for ‘shabby chic’, an unpretentious laid-back living style she helped bring into vogue 20 years ago. Ashwell favours a country look for a bedroom based around easy-on-the-eye soft, primitive colours. “I love faded florals, with vintage scatter cushions on the bed for summer days, and like to conjure an eclectic, romantic, inviting and soft atmosphere,” she says. “Traditional furniture, either in light or bleached wood or in distressed finishes

in whites or greys, won’t dominate and will impart a tranquil feel.” In her own bedroom she has plush silk curtains, a sparkling chandelier and a collection of photographs to inspire happy memories on a white painted bedside table.

Her tip... Accommodate an easy chair where you can sit and relax, and keep the bed as a separate zone for sleeping. Colours such as soft smoky greys, pinks, blues, teals, taupes, ivory and whites are good choices for a peaceful setting.

Rachel Ashwell’s Shabby Chic bed linen collection starts from £60 for a duvet cover from House of Fraser.

Chrissie RuckerThe founder of the hugely successful The White Company believes the bedroom should be a sensual sanctuary where comfort reigns. “The starting point for great quality bed linen is

that it must be made from the best quality yarn. Once you’ve slept in fabulously smooth and luxurious, pure cotton - whatever the thread count - you’ll never look back,” she says. “It’s worth investing in high quality bed linen because it really does affect the way we sleep. Pure cotton or linen are preferable because both fabrics are breathable, cool and comfortable.”Choose, she says, between the crisp smoothness of percale or the silky softness and sheen of sateen. Or for something that needs little ironing, go for a cotton-rich, easy care cotton/poly percale blend. “Don’t be deceived into thinking that the higher the thread count the better the sheet, as different types of bed linen require different thread counts to produce the desired finished product,” she points out.

Her tip... In spring and summer a bedroom should be a cool, airy sanctuary with soothing scents.

If there’s one place in the home that should be a peaceful retreat, where it’s almost impossible not to instantly rest and relax, it’s the bedroom.

“A softly scented bedroom is bliss. Lavender-based scents or light, floral-based scents such as rose or peony always work well,” she suggests. “Flowers such as simple, white potted orchids also work well in bedrooms. Use pillow mist or linen spray to scent linen and a scented candle to help you unwind after a long day.”

Santorini Bed Linen Collection starts from £75 for a double duvet cover and features in the ranges at The White Company.

Kirstie Allsopp“I love beautiful bed linen - there’s nothing like climbing into crisp, clean sheets at the end of a long, tiring day,” enthuses Allsopp, mother of two sons and stepmother to her partner Ben Andersen’s two boys. “My bedroom isn’t exactly an exclusive sanctuary as there are always small people crawling into bed for a cuddle! When decorating a bedroom I like a theme based around one thing that I can’t live without, which might be favourite bed linen, or curtain fabric, or an accessory, and I build the scheme from there.” Allsopp and her family divide their time between their homes in London and Devon and she says: “Currently, I’m embracing colour for my bedding with lots of florals, stripes and ginghams which have a vintage look with a contemporary twist, and can be matched with co-ordinating cushions, throws and feminine lampshades. Bedtime bliss!”

Her tip... Instead of redecorating, rearrange furniture and buy bedroom

treats such as towels, sheets, cushions or lamp shades to transform a room for little cost.

Kirsty Allsopp’s Home Living Collection starts from £50 for a single duvet cover. Stockists include House of Fraser, Debenhams and selected Fenwicks. Visit www.ashleywildegroup.com

Zandra RhodesThe British fashion designer is known for her flamboyant, joie de vivre designs and renowned for her use of colour and pattern. “I think when your bedroom looks fabulous it makes your home very special,” she says. “Just as you change your look with what you wear, you can scrutinise your bedroom and think, ‘You know, maybe I’ll be black this week’ or you might just want to be pink and stunning, my favourite! By changing the bedding and bedspreads, a new look can be achieved in an instant.” One of her favourite themes for a bedroom is her trademark vivid pink, and she’s used cerise cabbage roses for the walls, with a focal point of a queen-sized heart-shaped bed.

Her tip... Re-dressing the bed completely revamps a scheme, so take your lead from that and accessorise around it.

The Summer Collection of bed linen from Zandra Rhodes starts from £60 for a double duvet cover. For stockists visit www.ashleywildegroup.com

Kylie MinogueThe singing star has her own collection of bed linen and says: “Bed should be a place for just two things - love and sleep.” She explains: “I’ve actually become a better sleeper than I used to be by doing the things you should do in bed rather than the things you shouldn’t, such as being on my laptop or watching TV. “I love making beds with fresh linen - either from my At Home range or vintage - but I hate hospital corners. I like to be able to pull things around me.” Minogue, who splits her time between London and Spain, where her partner Andres Velencoso is based, adds: “Travel and vintage finds are my main inspiration for my bed linen designs. “I have a gorgeous eiderdown from the 1930s that I found a couple of years ago on eBay, beautiful vintage fabrics I

he kitchen has always been recognised as the ‘heart of the

home’, but with more emphasis being placed towards current trends and open-plan living, the kitchen

has started to influence other spaces in the home too. As a result, we are noticing the benchmark for a kitchen is to create a place for food preparation as well as an inviting social hub. The key to achieving this look is to find the right balance between function, practicality and design.

Contemporary, minimalist kitchens are ideal if you are the type of person who eats, sleeps and breathes the open-plan lifestyle. With the world unable to slow down, it’s right to expect the most from each room when you return home after a long day. To have a place to relax and replenish, cook without restriction and to of course entertain, has meant the kitchen has fast become the epicentre of the home. Open-plan living lends itself perfectly to this way of life, as does the practicality and freedom of a contemporary kitchen. Vibrant, high gloss doors can provide not only impact to an interior but also reflect the light which filters into the kitchen.

The advent garde Aspen kitchen by Doimo is the perfect example of this, making a statement in high gloss red, it shows exactly how you can warm up a large expanse of space and still

not dominate the overall interior, just add to it. The kitchen door fronts are available in a vast selection of vibrant coloured high gloss glass to satisfy the progressives among us, or for the natural look, select from the gorgeous stone range that offers a selection of four luxury finishes. Sleek in design, this style of kitchen provides functionality as well as up-to-the-minute flair. The Aspen kitchen is perfectly suited to the contemporary lifestyle as it guarantees for fuss free, uncluttered living!

Traditional and classically styled kitchens are suited to more of a period setting as they can enhance the original aesthetics of the home as well as restore character that’s been lost over time. Natural woods, hand painted cabinetry and shaker-style detailing are just some of the features we have come to expect from traditional design and from experience

confidently say, features that work in either a large or compact space.

The Kinsale painted oak kitchen by Burbidge is ideal for the style savvy homeowner who recognises that a

classic design will always outlive the latest fads. Quality materials and time honoured craftsmanship are apparent, made entirely from solid oak and finished in the gentle honey tones of natural oak, Kinsale epitomises all that is beautiful and desirable in a high class traditional kitchen. However, for the proportion of traditionalists who want to add some modern elements, combining a high gloss worktop or the latest streamline

appliance within a traditional kitchen, can inject an unexpected design twist from the normal range cooker or stone solid surface.

In the same breath, note the added

the high glamour, contemporary light which creates a stunning focal point to the Kinsale kitchen. It is important to consider getting the right blend of ambient and task lighting in a kitchen. Try to combine practical down lighting with a few statement pieces and you will successfully pour light into the room. This will not only enhance certain design features but also ensure a well lit preparation area. If your kitchen is more of a lifestyle room like the Aspen from Doimo, be sure to provide additional lighting that will create a certain atmosphere. This will add warmth and interest to a large room and also give the option to control the light to suit your mood, time of day or just complement a certain design concept.

On the whole, it is important to have fun with a kitchens interior and with so much choice of cabinetry, design, layout and finish, try to tailor something that is right for you. Our kitchen designers always like a challenge, so we encourage ‘out of the box’ thinking from you, so that we can take an innovative, design approach which will look to succeed in a bespoke kitchen of your dreams.

Playtime for Grown-UpsCelebrities may party at chic clubs, restaurants and premieres but, increasingly, the hottest entertainment destination for the rest of us is our own home. Cinemas, party rooms, bars and games rooms are now considered must-haves in high-end homes. But while most people don’t have the budget for such lavish spaces, it doesn’t stop us embracing the philosophy that ‘staying in’ is the new ‘going out’ - and looking for kit to make it possible. “The world has moved on in terms of the way people use their homes,” says designer Tara Bernerd of Tara Bernerd & Partners. “Of course, those who can afford luxury want entertainment areas - a cinema room, a games room with a pool table and a party ‘night club’ zone so they can effortlessly and instantly

enjoy their often limited leisure time.“Most people now regard their homes as little kingdoms, where they can demonstrate their taste, be cocooned and amused when they’re alone or with family, or entertain in style when the mood takes them.” Home bars have shed their naff reputation. A built-in bar was a famous and much mocked fixture in the Trotters’ lounge in TV’s Only Fools And Horses, but now high street giants Marks & Spencer and John Lewis both have sophisticated ranges of drinks cabinets and trolleys.

Freezing weather aside, which makes venturing out even less appealing, socialising indoors means you can tailor an occasion exactly to suit you and your guests. This could potentially

as when they’re used for entertaining groups of friends or for parties,” she says. So, if you’re a dedicated party-giver, movie buff, or just want to kit out a room to give teenagers some space (and you some privacy), check out entertaining ideas from the experts.

Game on“Games rooms are now essential ‘play spaces’ in homes,” says Henrietta Perry, director of interior design specialists Callister Russell. “One of the most important things for our clients is creating that ‘wow factor’. “We source bespoke details whether it’s a vintage arcade game or one of our most recent acquisitions - a pool table which once belonged to musician Eric Clapton. “It’s all part of ensuring a games

save you money, not to mention freeing hosts from concerns over drinking and driving. “Men may be more interested in gadgets, gizmos and toys for a games room, while women are keen to have areas where they can relax and entertain such as cinema rooms and bar areas,” says Bernerd.

Convenience and privacy are motivating factors for those who already have the luxury gyms, pools and spas, and see separate entertainment zones as complementary to those facilities. But she points out many people want their homes to have multi-functional spaces. “One of our aims is to ensure these rooms are versatile and have just as much atmosphere and appeal when they are used as intimate, relaxing spaces

Shaken not stirred“Home bars are enjoying a huge revival and can be positioned discreetly in the corner of a living room or act as a focal point in a party area,” says interior designer Joanna Wood. “Clients can enjoy using them as an intimate space

for evening drinks or cocktails or as a convenient serving and preparation area during the day for non-alcoholic drinks such as smoothies.” The demise of the dining room is allowing people to use that space for entertaining, says John Stephens, managing director of Rencraft, specialists in bespoke kitchens and furniture. “We are certainly noticing an increase in demand for home entertainment zones from sociable bar areas through to home cinema rooms,” he says. “People now prefer larger open-plan kitchens, with an area at one end for socialising. It particularly suits those with children who don’t want the bother and expense of finding babysitters and so can easily party at home.”

Join the bar Spend... A bespoke home bar crafted in oak, hand-painted and lit starts from around £5,000 from Rencraft and a curved bar in walnut with nickel detailing, and sides in metallic plum-coloured vinyl, starts

Lights, camera, action“Cinema rooms are outstripping pools in popularity in luxury homes,” says Matt Wayne, consultant designer at Finite Solutions. “Cinema-size screens which magically appear or disappear when not in use are enormously popular, so we can conceal them in walls behind panels or pictures. “For one client we created a private ‘multiplex’ with a lit pathway to leather seats, a 100-inch screen, integrated

acoustic panels whose fronts displayed family photos, and a library of 6,000 films arranged into themed programmes.” Lighting is key to the right atmosphere in entertainment areas or cinema rooms, points out Sally Storey, design director at John Cullen Lighting. “It’s essential to have lighting effects which are dimmable so that one can immediately change the environment of a room from a brightly-lit area to a moody, dramatic party space or viewing area at the touch of a button. “Consider adding uplights at low level at either side of a fireplace or around the corners of a room, which can be very dramatic.”

A Design for Life

hen it comes to creating a

nursery, nothing but the best will do

and no luxurious detail is overlooked, whether it’s furniture embellished with glittering crystals, elaborate fantasy murals, or exquisite hand-built furniture. Singer Beyonce and her husband Jay-Z reportedly spent around £1 million kitting out three nurseries in their various homes for daughter, Blue Ivy Carter, born in January. As well as a miniature pink bath, studded with 45,000 Swarovski crystals, and a matching high chair (£10,000), they’re also said to have a solid gold rocking horse as one of their daughter’s first toys. “It’s certainly not unusual for those with wealth and status to opt for the ‘wow’ factor,” says Lizzie Mackey, senior designer at nursery boutique Dragons of Walton Street, which boasts many celebrity clients. “This is a room on which people lavish a huge amount of care, attention and money. And they want it to match the rest of their home and their style. “They view a nursery as a particularly special space. After all, it’s their child’s first view of the world and a room they will probably never forget, so getting it right is incredibly important to them. On-trend parents are opting for more colour and personality in their

rooms, and moving away from neutrals, she says. There’s a desire to create out-of-this-

world settings, often featuring hand-painted murals. “One of my

favourite nurseries had a cot upholstered to resemble a fluffy cloud, with drapes hung with crystal droplets to replicate rain drops, and we created a mural to resemble a glowing pink sunrise and sky. It cost around £90,000.”

The company furnished a nursery for singer Lily Allen, whose daughter, Ethel Mary, was born in November. It supplied pieces hand-decorated with ladybirds and bumble bees. “She fell in love with a fabric which featured garden insects and we worked around that theme. It was colourful and magical, but very

Established as a family business in 1937, C.P. Hart has consistently challenged people to take a fresh look at bathroom design. C.P. Hart creates bathrooms that work in harmony with your lifestyle and reflect your aesthetic ideals - bathrooms you can be proud of.

Thanks to the launch of a new destination showroom in the heart of St Albans, Hertfordshire now benefits from C.P. Hart’s unique insight and honed expertise. Positioned on London Road, C.P. Hart St Albans is the source of bathroom inspiration for homeowners, interior designers, property developers and architects as well as the ideal choice for installers looking for a reliable and competitive supplier.

displays showcase classic and contemporary room sets featuring carefully chosen ceramics, furniture and brassware. This impressive introduction is only a taste of the retailer’s ever-evolving and enviable portfolio. Having sourced the finest bathroom products from the world’s best manufacturers alongside in-house ranges, the breadth of choice is extensive with many products exclusive to the brand.

Access to the world’s most exciting bathroom products is not the only aspect of C.P. Hart that sets it apart. With 75 years of experience, C.P. Hart understands how to plan every aspect of a bathroom, from water pressure and plumbing through to understanding what materials work together and the ultimate finishing

touches. To make the most of this know-how, seek the support and advice of C.P. Hart’s qualified Design Service, headed up at St Albans by Designer, Tanya Jones.

“Bathrooms are much more complicated than people think and seeking professional advice should always be the first step to planning a new bathroom,” explains Tanya. “Whilst it’s important to have the bathroom of your dreams, it is essential that your bathroom is reliable and safe.

When people first come to a C.P. Hart showroom they have an idea of what style of bathroom they want. However, as they explore our room sets and see what can be achieved in terms of space and

budget, the final designs are often very different.

At St Albans we have even taken the average size of a British bathroom and created a range of stunning looks to demonstrate how a room with limited dimensions can still benefit from the most cutting-edge furniture, a double shower or freestanding bath and even a home spa (pictured). People are truly astonished with the results.”

The C.P. Hart design team prides itself on leading the latest trends and how to incorporate these into both contemporary and more traditional schemes to provide any bathroom with real wow-factor.

Tanya remarks: “2012 sees a resurgence of monochrome. This elegant look works well with sculptural ceramics in both white and black. The Henley basin and stand (pictured) showcases how detailing and legs usually associated with more traditional bedroom furniture can be incorporated into a contemporary vanity console. The effect creates a striking silhouette that would work well in a period property or modern home.

Dual finishes are also increasingly popular. British brand, Victoria + Albert Baths has just introduced a glamorous, high gloss piano black exterior to many of its naturally white Quarrycast baths and basins, such as the indulgent slipper-style Amalfi (pictured). The contrast creates an impressive focal point.

Furniture is taking its lead from kitchen solutions with highly compartmentalised storage providing the ideal space for every essential. At C.P. Hart St Albans we have a variety of styles on show including the Twenty collection by Italian Design House, Modulnova (pictured). This modular option is one of my favourites as it can be assembled in over 250 configurations and is available in over 50 fantastic colours from bold red to the new nude cappuccino.

For technology fans there are wide range of exciting developments on the market including touch-controlled bath, basin and shower mixers that supply water at precise temperatures as well as offering pre-programmed settings that deliver the perfect bathing or shower experience every time.

Other must-see products at the showroom include the cutting-edge Diamante collection from celebrated designer Jaime Hayon, a range of unique Italian hand-blown basins from the Glass Design Bowl Collection and the brand new flush-to-the-floor Dogi furniture.”

Once Tanya and her team have worked on the designs and suggested products for your bathroom, C.P. Hart’s unrivalled service continues to offer support. St Albans Manager Chris Moone explains: “C.P. Hart benefits from a team of technical experts who are on hand to provide counsel from a product installation perspective, answering any tricky question associated with fitting a bathroom. The team is unique to C.P. Hart and is available to all customers including our trade partners.”

The C.P. Hart technical team also oversees the in-house product testing operation that vigorously tests each and every addition to C.P. Hart’s product portfolio ensuring every product meets safety standards and will stand the test of time.

C.P. Hart unites the world’s most exciting bathroom products with unfaltering and friendly support. With a price-guarantee to match any like-for-like quote there is no reason to go anywhere else.

FAMILY LAW

We all want to make sure we pay the right amount of tax and certainly not too much, but sometimes planning ahead is required to make sure we don’t pay tax unnecessarily. A case in point is in the area of pensions. Alex Drake, a Private Client partner at Taylor Walton solicitors considers why anyone in a pension scheme needs to protect their death-in-service benefits.

If you work for a company it is possible you will have some kind of pensions scheme that will payout should you die while working for your employer. These are called death-in-service benefits. They are arranged by your employer and can be standalone or as part of your pension arrangement. Likewise you may have made your own pension arrangements to which the following comments would also apply

The payment of death benefits on most pension schemes is ‘discretionary’, which means the pension trustee has the discretion to pay the death benefits to whomever they wish; it won’t be part of your estate for Inheritance Tax (IHT) purposes. Due to the trustees’ powers of discretion, it is usual to fill out a form called a “Letter of Wishes” to the pension trustees explaining

This tax problem can be avoided by using the Letter of Wishes to give the death-in-service benefit to a trust that you have set up. The trust is held outside the survivor’s estate; (and therefore not subject to IHT on the survivor’s death) however the survivor can benefit from the trust and receive income from it.

Even more cleverly the trust can be written with power to lend monies to the survivor and as a result the survivor will have the full use of the trust’s funds. The best part, however, is that the loan becomes a debt of the survivor’s estate on their death which reduces the value of the estate for IHT purposes and the trust money can be passed on to other beneficiaries. This type of trust is often known as a spousal by-pass trust.

By using a spousal by-pass trust, not only can the survivor have the full benefit of the monies payable but an IHT saving can be made at the same time!

Spousal by-pass trusts are not limited to death in service benefits and pension benefits. They can be used in conjunction with any form of life insurance. Therefore anyone with any type of term life insurance or mortgage protection insurance should consider placing the benefit of the policies into

how you wish them to distribute any death in service, which trustees invariably follow. You should keep a copy of any such form with your copy of the Will, so that when reviewing your Will in future you can review the instructions you have given at the same time.

However, to protect these IHT free benefits you need to be a little bit savvy. Even though these death benefits are not treated as estate assets, a bit of thought needs to be given to IHT consequences.

The natural instinct of anybody is to nominate a spouse or partner to receive any such benefits but in the case of a spouse these would have passed free of IHT anyway because no IHT is paid on assets passed between married couples. So, all that would happen is that the benefit paid to your spouse or partner would increase the tax payable upon the second death. Death in Service benefit is often expressed in multiples of annual salary, usually three times and so can quite easily surpass the £100,000 mark, IHT free. Once the benefits of the policy have been paid to the surviving spouse, or partner, they become an asset of their estate and thereby potentially liable to IHT at 40 per cent.

such a trust. The surviving spouse can still be a trustee and therefore control how the funds are used.

Many pension and life insurance companies offer precedent trust documents. While some of these contain the necessary powers to make loans, not all standard form trusts have the necessary powers and are limited in their usefulness. If you decide to use these standard forms you need to make sure they are completed correctly as putting the wrong name in the wrong box can cost you literally tens of thousands of pounds in IHT. Alternatively we can draw up a “made to measure” trust for you incorporating the appropriate powers tailored to your own personal circumstances.

1 acre grounds abutting greenbelt countryside, is this impressive and substantial family home, providing extensive and flexible living over three floors.

Positioned at the end of a private road off Totteridge Green, facing directly onto the picturesque duck pond, this contemporary styled detached residence occupies grounds of around an acre, and is approached via carriage driveway with detached double garage to side. Upon entering, the vestibule opens onto an impressive Reception Hall with the generously appointed intercommunicating formal Drawing Room and Dining Room to the rear, as well as a fitted Study, to the front. A good sized Family Room with a range of fitted units is also located off the hallway, and in turn, leads to a Utility Room and second guest cloakroom. But perhaps one of the most discerning features of the sprawling ground floor, is the fully fitted and integrated kitchen/breakfast room –

conveniently accessed from both the Dining Room and Family Room, and open plan to an extremely bright and airy, glazed ‘garden room’ measuring 33’ x 17’, leading to spacious terrace, with far reaching views across the landscaped garden and countryside beyond.

To the first floor, a galleried landing and corridor leads to four bedrooms and two

family bathrooms, as well as the magnificent Master Suite; comprising bedroom area with separate, fully fitted dressing room, spacious ensuite bathroom containing stand-alone bath tub, twin wash hand basins set in vanity unit, walk-in shower cubicle, and separate WC - and to the rear, a private terrace overlooking the gardens.

Continuing upwards to the

second floor there are a further four bedrooms and another two family bathrooms, as well as a second lounge containing ‘kitchenette’ – ideal for teenagers to ‘hang out’, or alternatively, as separate living quarters for staff or long-term guests.

This well proportioned and spacious family home is further complemented by outstanding landscaped gardens to the rear, with rolling, manicured lawns featuring a large, heated and covered swimming pool, with mature tree and shrub borders, and extensive terrace for entertaining.

It’s elevated position, near sought-after Brickendon in Hertfordshire, is set in greenbelt land, enjoying uninterrupted views over rolling paddocks and formal gardens exceeding 45 acres. Stunning 360-degree vistas extend toward horizons of verdant forestry, protected by the Woodland Trust.

These pre-Roman woods surround the estate and boast a plethora of wildlife and historical landmarks. Hedgegrove House has its own private woodland in which Spital Brook burbles through, several spring fed ponds and lakes, one a natural bathing pond, interspersing this very private estate.

The views, could rival those, offered by the Peak District, New Forest or Devon Moors but are only 11 miles from central London! Its vistas span dozens

of miles, unblemished by any visible neighbours, telegraph poles, pylons, and with no public footpaths or roadways to cross or border the land.

Full and Detailed Planning has recently been attained for a 6 bedroom (all with en-suites), 5 reception room, 4 storey Georgian style residence of over 12,000 sq ft internal space, complete with indoor pool complex, spa, gymnasium, cinema, office, staff

/guest quarters, formal walled gardens, private driveway, gated entrance and triple garage.

The Equestrian potential is fabulous with flat paddocks close to the main residence with access to 15 miles of bridleways on adjoining land or private hacks within the estate. There is even space for your own 9 hole golf course, tennis courts, or even a football pitch… with scope to create an enormous freestyle 3-acre trout lake, with
