The site of the Hall and the Museum is, without doubt, a very old one. It is close to the first century BC settlement of Wheathamstead, the major Roman town of Verulanium and St. Albans which is of late Saxon foundation. Early notable (but unwelcome!) visitors to the area were probably Julius Caesar in

54BC, and Boadicea of the Iceni in 61AD. During the early 9th century the site was part of the Manor of Shenleybury. It was held by Asgar the Stallar, who was probably a high official to the Wessex King Egbert. After the Norman Conquest the Manor passed to the de Mandeville family who held it when the Doomsday Book was written in 1086. In 1380 the Hall passed in marriage to Sir John Montague, later Earl of Salisbury. It is perhaps at this time that the Manor acquired its now familiar name of Salisbury Hall. About 1420 Alice, Countess of Salisbury, married Sir Richard Neville, who became Earl of Warwick. He had two sons, Richard Neville (better known as Warwick the Kingmaker) and John, Marquis of Montagu, who were both killed at the Battle of Barnet in April 1471.

A new house was built about 1507 by Sir John Cutte, Treasurer to King Henry VII and Henry VIII. The house was purchased in 1668 by James Hoare, a London banker. At this time the present house was built, bringing with it associations with Charles II and Nell Gwynne, who lived in a cottage by the bridge to the Hall. Her ghost is one that is said to have been seen in the Hall. The Hall passed to Sir Jeremy Snow’s nephew, John Snell, and from then through various hands, and during the latter

part of the 19th century was occupied by a succession of farmers. However, about 1905 Lady Randolph Churchill, as Mrs. Cornwallis West, came here to live. Her son, Winston Churchill, became a regular visitor. During the 1930s Sir Nigel Gresley, of the London and North Eastern Railway, was in residence. He was responsible for the A4 Pacific Steam Locomotives one of which, Mallard, holds the world speed record for steam locomotives of 126.5 mph. Rumour has it that the name came from the ducks in the moat.

In September 1939 the de Havilland Aircraft Company established the Mosquito design team in the Hall, the Prototype Mosquito, E0234/W4050, subsequently being built in the adjacent buildings. Nell Gwynne’s cottage was the centre of a silk worm farm, which supplied the silk for Her Majesty the Queen’s wedding and Coronation robes. Yet another royal connection.

De Havillands left in 1947 and the Hall slipped into a derelict condition. However, in 1955 the Hall was taken in hand by an ex Royal Marine Major named Walter Goldsmith who restored it and opened it up to the public. He brought back the prototype Mosquito, E0234/W4050, as one of the attractions in 1959, an action which led to the establishment of the Mosquito Aircraft Museum. Walter Goldsmith sold the Hall in 1981 and since then it has been restored to a very high standard and remains in private ownership to this day.

“Abbey Road has led the way, pioneered and inspired, andthis event proves how pivotal

Abbey Road Studios is tothe music we love”

The Londonist

Following the glowing public response to the series of unique events held at London’s legendary Abbey Road Studios earlier this year, they are pleased to announce ‘Inside Abbey Road: The Best Studio In The World’ - a new series of talks to be held in the famous Studio Two during March 2013.

Brian Kehew and Kevin Ryan (authors of the critically acclaimed, definitive book ‘Recording the Beatles’), will give their second series of fascinating and enjoyable talks on Abbey Road Studios’ rich history and continued success at the forefront of today’s music. They will explore the studios’ decades of landmark recordings, celebrating the technology and sonic creativity that lead to epoch-defining music from fêted artists such as Radiohead, Pink Floyd, Adele and of course, The Beatles.

With over 20 years of research into EMI history, they have uncovered many secrets and have worked with Abbey Road to preserve and illuminate the Studios’ immense history and ongoing legacy. The talks will explore the history and the present day with rare archive photos, film and audio, showing changes to the studio and

equipment, with the Studios’ long progression through all kinds of music, from classical to rock and beyond, including more recent hits recorded, mixed and mastered at the studios.

They will also explore the studios’ rich experience in film scoring and even demonstrate how sound and images are synched for some of the biggest movies ever made such as ‘Star Wars’, ‘Harry Potter’, ‘Lord of the Rings’ ‘The King’s Speech’, ‘Prometheus’ and the new Bond film ‘Skyfall’. Visitors will be allowed early entrance with time to explore and take photographs in the famous Studio Two, where seminal acts like The Beatles, Oasis, The Hollies, The Shadows, Pink Floyd and Kate Bush recorded epoch-defining music. More recently, Elbow recorded their theme for the 2012 Olympics in this legendary studio and artists such as Brian Wilson, Paul Simon, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Ryan Adams, Laura Marling and Feist laid down performances for the ‘Live From Abbey Road’ television show.

Brian Kehew, co-author of ‘Recording the Beatles’, is a record producer, engineer and musician. He has worked with The Who, Fiona Apple, Air, Rod Stewart, Talking Heads, Aretha Franklin, and Black Sabbath.

Kevin Ryan, co-author of ‘Recording the Beatles’ is a Houston-based producer, arranger and composer. He is also a talented graphic designer and video/film artist.

David Beckham TRAVELS WITH

Breitling has chosen David Beckham as the face of its Transocean Chronograph Unitime worldtimer watch. The new campaign establishes a long-term partnership between the innovative and historic Swiss brand and one of the world’s most celebrated icons.

One of the world’s most successful sportsmen and style icons, Beckham stars in the Breitling advert featuring a highly evocative visual shot by renowned American photographer Anthony Mandler. On the runway of the Mojave Air & Space Port in California, the striking image shows Beckham standing in front of a private jet wearing his Transocean Chronograph Unitime.

Through its long-established ties with aviation, the sky has always been the limit for Breitling – as the brand has proved throughout its history by creating a number of travel watches including the famous Unitime in the 1950s and 60s.

In the spring of 2012, it took things to the next level by presenting the

Transocean Chronograph Unitime. Equipped with the new Manufacture Breitling Calibre B05 featuring a patented mechanism, this world-timer chronograph has asserted itself as the ultimate travel watch thanks to its double disc enabling permanent readings of the time in all 24 timezones, and its ultra-user-friendly crown-operated correction system.

BRINGING THE WORLD TO THE WRIST

Breitling reasserted its horological mastery by launching a “world time” chronograph equipped with a new calibre entirely developed and produced in-house. Thanks to its double disc, the Transocean Chronograph Unitime simultaneously and constantly indicates the time in all 24 timezones. An innovative system based on a patented mechanism enables the user, when changing timezone, to adjust all the indications in one smooth and easy move by simply turning the crown. An exceptional new instrument has made its grand entry into the world of exclusive fine mechanisms.

TIME FOR TRAVEL

While the chronograph and instruments for professionals have established themselves since 1884 as Breitling’s domain of excellence, travel watches have also played an important role in the history of the brand with the winged B. In sharing the finest hours in the conquest of the skies, Breitling accompanied the boom in air transport and long-distance travel. During the 1950s and 60s, the brand distinguished itself by introducing a sophisticated model named Unitime, a selfwinding “world time” watch that has since become a much sought-after collector’s item. Today, Breitling is further extending its invitation to enjoy travel and performances by combining universal time and the chronograph function within a new model in the Transocean range – a collection reflecting all

the refinement and prestige of luxury long-distance journeys. Associating innovative technology with stylish aesthetics, the Transocean Chronograph Unitime is distinguished by its modern, pure lines and the infinite care lavished on the smallest details – such as its dial bearing a globe pattern. It comes in steel or red gold versions with the city bezel available in several languages. That unmistakable first-class feeling on the wrist.

PERFORMANCE AND COMFORT

In creating Calibre 01, the Breitling engineers devised the world’s best chronograph movement. In developing the new Calibre 05, based on the same high-performance architecture, they have also reinvented the world time mechanism by equipping it with an adjustment system boasting

FEATURE

3 2 F E B R U A R Y 2 0 1 3

Page 33: St Albans Life Magazine February 2013

unprecedented user friendliness. The Transocean Chronograph Unitime features two mobile discs: a 24-hour disc and a disc bearing the names of 24 cities representing the world’s 24 time-zones. The time shown by the central hands corresponds to that of the time-zone displayed at 12 o’clock. The city disc also bears indications serving to take account of “summer” or daylight saving time (DST).

When the user changes timezone, he need only pull out the crown and turn it forwards or backwards in one-hour increments in order to correct the hours, the city disc and the 24-hour disc in one smooth move. Meanwhile, the calendar is easily adjusted in both directions to the date corresponding to local time. During these manoeuvres, the minute and seconds hands continue turning normally without any loss of precision,

and without disturbing any chronograph timing operations in progress.

“I’ve always been a long-time admirer of Breitling”, said David Beckham. “As a company they create not only the highest-performance watches but also timeless designs that have inspired generations. It was a natural choice for me to partner with this fantastic brand.”

Welcome...The independent school system in the UK is one of the

finest in the world and you are fortunate to have some of

the best schools in the country right on your doorstep.

In today’s economic climate, making the right choice for

your child’s education is of paramount importance.

Sometimes every parent needs a helping hand in deciding what is best for their children.

Our Education Life series is an invaluable resource for any parent

considering private education. Many schools will be having

their first open days of 2013 soon. Encourage your children

to come with you and get their feedback after each visit.

This also provides an insight into the way a child sees a prospective

future school. This month sees the first of our three part Education

Life series which will also appear in April and September issues.

THE FINEST SCHOOLS IN HERTFORDSHIRE & LONDON

Page 36: St Albans Life Magazine February 2013

Sport will be high on your child’s list of priorities when it comes to senior schools! You will understand that sport plays a pivotal role in child development. Sport develops teamwork and confidence through mastering new skills. It helps form fast friendships and the habit of participation. It is the key to a healthy lifestyle. The

relaxation it provides may be a crucial antidote in years to come to the fierce pressures that are the norm in many careers. Your child will grow through sport and discover a source of joy and passion that can last a lifetime.

So consider: does the school have a sporting ethos in which fair play, as well as excellence is considered an important aspect of education? Has it the sort of talented coaches that can inspire and pass on skills and disciplines to youngsters? Does it provide opportunities for your child to develop as a sportsman across a wide range of sports? At the elite end, are there students playing at county, regional and national level? Are there academic PE options at GSCE and A-Level that can open up career opportunities in performance, psychology and the business of sport: marketing, sports media, and research?

Is sport delivered primarily by the PE staff or does the whole school commit to games, with all pupils and staff are out on the pitches together? ‘Whole school games’ has several advantages. It allows the pupils to see subject teachers as more than narrow specialists. It promotes warm pupil-teacher relations. It provides children with admirable role models who share their enthusiasms. It also makes it far easier to recruit external coaches to support the outstanding specialist teachers.

Some schools focus on high-end performance; others – like Taylors’ - provide a ‘developmental’ approach, focused on participation for the younger children and developing that into performance for the older ones. All boys (even the not particularly “sporty”) find something they can enjoy that

becomes part of the fabric of their lives. This breadth is complemented by an ethos that includes increasing the number of pupils representing their county, region or indeed performing in national squads. “Facilities” are secondary – look at Bradman or Pelé! If a school really wants to offer rowing, equestrianism, golf, fencing, fives, windsurfing, swimming, croquet, sailing, and sub-aqua sports - it will!

Most schools offer competitive sport to all pupils. How many teams are put out? What range of sports is offered (individual and team)? Will your child get a game? Is the approach ‘win at all costs’ or a developmental one? Children learn nothing from a 10-0 drubbing. They learn very little from a 10 wicket victory. Check out the fixture list. Is it the same as a few years ago? A dynamic sports school will not rest easy on its laurels and retain traditional fixtures if they result in embarrassingly easy wins. Look for a school that develops its fixture list so that the children may at first experience narrow defeat against strong opposition, but then be motivated by this to raise the bar so that their confidence, skills and performance improve year-on.

Many schools offer scholarships for sport. What does their scholars’ programme actually offer? The best programmes support and improve high level youngsters and also encompass all-rounders and specialists. They focus on supporting and improving the pupil – not the school’s results! Taylors’ has a dynamic programme where scholars enjoy additional classes - including yoga and ballet – for strength and conditioning. A personal mentor meets each scholar weekly to review progress and discuss performance.

Sport is a common language that cuts across social and national divides and provides life-changing experiences. Pupils learn respect, adherence to a set of rules, to win modestly and lose with dignity. Few lives are failure-free and the resilience that a child needs to overcome life’s knockbacks and go on to success is often first learned on the sports field.

It has been a typically busy time at Edge Grove over the past few months, following the arrival last Autumn of the new Headmaster, Ben Evans.

At Edge Grove life is never dull and in their busy day the children share a wealth of opportunity. This is particularly evident from the success of the new ‘After School Activities Programme’ that runs every day in two sessions from 4pm until 6pm, and also on Saturday mornings. The majority of pupils in Years 3-8 are participating in the programme and enjoying a wide range of activities, such as Chamber Choir, Horse riding, Mandarin, LAMDA, Chess, Taekwondo and many more. There really is something for everyone!

Many trips have recently taken place, including an Art trip to the V&A, a Geography trip to the Natural History Museum, and an outing to Tring Zoological Museum. The U11 and U13 netball teams recently enjoyed a

weekend tour to Brighton and a ski trip to Italy is planned for March.

Sport remains a key aspect of life at Edge Grove and the school is thrilled to be the IAPS National 6-aside Soccer Champions for the second year in a row. Table Tennis continues to be popular with both U11 boys and girls now through to the Southern Region Final in the Butterfly National School Team Championships.

Other recent highlights include a wonderfully entertaining production of ‘Bugsy’ in December, showcasing the popularity for drama at Edge Grove. The school achieved second place at the National Prep Schools Key Stage 2 General Knowledge Championship 2012-2013; participated in the Young Voices concert at the O2; and the Chamber Choir have reached the finals of the Barnardo’s National Choir Competition and will be singing at the Barbican in March.

EDUCATION

A wealth of opportunityAT EDGE GROVE

Page 39: St Albans Life Magazine February 2013

The start of school is a big step in a child’s life and also in that of its parents. There is much debate about when is the right age to start being taught, but here at Westbrook Hay we feel that it is

obvious; it is when the child is ready. Children can come to us in the term in which they turn 3, some will come from nurseries, other straight from home, while some will choose to remain at the local nursery and join us in Reception, when full time school begins.

In our purpose-built Lower School, children benefit from a secure setting, with its own playgrounds, and advantageous teacher: pupil ratios. The aim

is to provide a gentle start to life here, building on children’s existing skills. After two years or so in our Nursery, children move to Reception and this is the stage at which we see most children make the break through to literacy and numeracy.

One of the aspects that most appeals here is that the curriculum that underpins all the learning in the Nursery is delivered through children playing while they are learning. The subtlety involved requires skilled planning and delivery, but does mean that children largely remain blissfully unaware that they are being taught at this early stage.

The setting has to be exciting for children,

sustaining their interest and one that offers sufficient variety to make every day an enjoyable challenge. Give a child the opportunity to discover that the 10 coloured blocks they have can be sorted into a variety of groups and then built into a three-dimensional shape and the seeds of mathematical knowledge are sown in a practical manner, which has to be better than sitting there barking out the rote order of numbers in a robotic fashion that demonstrates little of value.

The modern child expects to be engaged by what they are doing and here at Westbrook Hay we believe that we provide children with the best start to their learning journey.

Just seven years old! There I was, armed with a large turquoise painted trunk and a wooden tuck box, and dressed in my grey flannel blazer and cap, deposited at my prep school. It all seemed like a great adventure; the stuff you read about in books, but for me it was now

real. Yes, it was to be two and a half weeks before I saw my parents again.

It was the second evening when it sank in. I had endured lessons – they didn’t feature in the adventure books; I realised that I was away from home, and I would be for the next two and a half weeks (minus the day and a half that had been covered). I was homesick!

This was, however, the first and last time that I was homesick. Instead, I look back fondly upon my time as a boarder; the opportunities were phenomenal.

It has only been recently that I have discovered another side to this coin. I had only seen things from my perspective; I was a child and adults are good at concealing their true feelings. However, as time has passed, my mother has admitted how difficult she found sending me away to school and I had been totally unaware of this. Given these emotions one wondered why they took the decisive step that I should board. But they were quite unequivocal; they felt they were doing the best for me, and this involved significant sacrifice on their part. Looking back, I am extremely grateful for the opportunities.

For any parent, the thought of sending a child away to school must invoke an extraordinary diversity of responses and emotions. The love for a child means that parting the child from a parent can feel like a mini-bereavement, particularly when the child is young.

A Boarding education presents a wealth of opportunities, not only in terms of facilities and encouraging independence, but also in social interaction and the demands of personal organisation.

Now as Assistant Head at Beechwood Park, a leading, co-educational preparatory day, weekly and flexi-boarding school situated near St Albans, Hertfordshire, and having also been Head of Boarding, I recognise the paradox of contrasting feelings when the concept of ‘boarding’ arises. There’s the child who waxes lyrical about the experience, the parent whose lips quiver at the thought, and there are cases where parents have different views on whether or not their child should board.

Given such conflicting emotions, is there a compromise? A perfect solution? Many schools acknowledge these juxtapositions; boarding has changed. Boarding no longer means packing a child off to school for weeks on end.

There is a happy medium - ‘flexi-boarding’ - which can take different forms.

The flexi-boarding model at Beechwood Park is as follows: children choose to board two, three or four nights a week; they can choose which weekday nights and these need not be consecutive. Each boarder has their own bed and can personalise their area. The nights they board can change weekly, fitting in with what is convenient and helpful for parents. Some parents view it as a rather luxurious form of babysitting!

The word ‘choose’ above is appropriate, but may seem surprising. It is the children who are desperate to board; they choose! Children are welcome to board weekly, but on nights when they are not boarding they go home just as the day children. So why do these children choose to board when there is no necessity and, one might suggest, no logical reason?

Just as children look forward to having a sleepover with their friends, they look forward to boarding. But boarding offers so much more than a sleepover! Yes, there is homework, but staff members are always available to help. Some children opt to board on nights when they have more difficult preps so they can seek ‘expert’ help.

After homework is finished, there is a huge range of activities on offer to the children, including football and rounders, to more peculiar options such as ‘Escape from Colditz’, ‘Stuck in the Sahara’ and ‘Great Balls of Fire’. To find out what fun this organised mayhem really is you need to board at Beechwood!

After activities, before bedtime there’s the chance to use the Games and Common Rooms, or enjoy toast and hot chocolate. It’s at this time that one observes particularly the laughter, camaraderie and friendship amongst boarders; no surprise, therefore, that it is the children themselves who are so keen to board.

The model clearly works for children, but does it work for parents? Would this have helped my mother in her sadness over sending me away to school? Some parents struggle with children boarding consecutive nights. Children often ask to board more and parental response can be ‘I couldn’t bare the thought of being away from you.’ There are distinct positives for parents; with the flexible system, parents change the nights their children board each week.

It would appear that there is a solution to the boarding dilemma: an answer which satisfies the demands and emotions of parents and children alike, and which enables the advantages of a boarding education whilst removing what may be regarded as the disadvantages for many.

The perfect solution to the boarding paradox?

Another busy term has recently ended at Beechwood Park – the day, weekly and flexi-boarding preparatory school for girls and boys aged 4 – 13 situated in Markyate, near St Albans. Once again it has been full of new challenges and a wide variety of achievements by

the pupils.

For the first time ever Beechwood Park entered a team of young mathematicians for the annual Prep Schools Maths Competition at Merchant Taylors’ School, Northwood and they won the trophy by beating 13 other local preparatory schools.

Also for the first time pupils from Year 4 through to Year 8 have been taking part in the Mangahigh Maths Challenge, and came fifth out of 900 schools in the British Isles. This is an outstanding achievement.

Inspired by the summer’s Olympics pupils participated in a number of new sports. For instance the IAPS Sailing Regatta was added to the fixture list and a talented team of young table tennis players came third in the Hertfordshire

County Table Tennis Championships. Pupils have also notched up notable successes in golf, swimming, rugby, hockey, netball, fencing, trampolining and martial arts.

Excursions, workshops and talks by visiting experts take place frequently at the school. These add to the culturally rich environment at Beechwood Park, where 140 pupils took external music examinations during the term.

The school benefits from a beautiful parkland setting in an eighteenth century mansion. A visit is strongly recommended. The Headmaster, Patrick Atkinson, is always happy to meet prospective parents.

Nearby at Little Cheverells is the recently refurbished and enlarged Beechwood Park Montessori Nursery. Beechwood Park is well served by an extensive bus service linking up many of the local towns and villages and bringing children to the school.

It is getting inreasingly difficult to get into the top universities - competition is fierce with thousands of students applying for each place. It is worth taking a step back to review how parents can best support their children through the daunting process of UCAS applications, and

ultimately achieve the university place of their choice.

Instilling the right attitudes and approach is paramount in achieving success. This is one of the many strengths of the independent school system. Academic excellence is a crucial factor as university offers are conditional on achieving specific results. At interview, however, intellectual rigour and curiosity will help your child stand out from the crowd. The independent system fosters that from day one, encouraging students to go beyond the basic curriculum, discover their own interests in the world and pursue them. Students can devise their own coursework titles, choose additional languages, and undertake contemporary scientific research simply unavailable to them elsewhere. Having the support and resources to make these choices increases their value as a prospective undergraduate.

Independent schools also help develop intellectual independence and encourage students to have the confidence to articulate their opinions, particularly in the Sixth Form. This can make a noticeable difference when students attend interviews. They are better informed, more relaxed and self-assured than other candidates.

Academic successes, however, will only take them so far. The best universities are on the look out for students who have already distinguished themselves across a range of extra-curricular programmes. The independent sector is fortunate to be able to offer a wide range of extra-curricular activities, which can provide a wealth of additional experiences and skills that will equip your child for the

demands of higher education. Many will have debated at The Hague with the Model United Nations, played London concert venues, taken plays to Fringe festivals, and competed at national level in rugby, fencing or lacrosse all relevant to their personal statements. Participating in such activities demonstrates a willingness to get involved, an aptitude for tackling complex challenges, and a social awareness of the world around them; all qualities expected by university admissions teams.

Many independent schools offer dedicated careers teams, who will discuss your child’s university options, enabling them to make the best choices possible for their future success and happiness. As your child progresses through the public examination years, having someone to guide them through their choice of subjects can make or break their application. The most competitive courses - Law, Medicine, and Economics - require you to take a specific set of A Levels just to apply. Excellent pastoral care can also ensure the whole UCAS process won’t seem as daunting. Students often receive one-to-one attention from tutors who know them personally, producing stronger and more successful applications.

Choosing an independent school means more than ensuring your child has access to the best facilities and educational support, it is an investment in their future that will develop the life-skills they will need for future successes, and greatly increase their chance of securing a place at a coveted university.

Why choosing an independent school leads to top university places

Abbot’s Hill School is an independent day school for girls aged 3-16 and boys aged 3-5 situated in seventy acres of parkland on the outskirts of

Hemel Hempstead. The School has a strong record of academic success and its aim is to educate, challenge and develop confident and independent girls. The recent Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI) report (January 2012) noted that “small classes, in which pupils feel well known and supported, enable them to

fulfil their potential” and “the quality of pupils’ personal development is outstanding”.

The School also offers a wide range of extra-curricular activities so that pupils can develop their talents outside the classroom. 2012 highlights included a bold production of The Tempest; a live news broadcast for BBC News School Report; a successful Science Extravaganza in the Junior department and the 1st Lacrosse team becoming Eastern Regional Small Schools

Champions. In 2013 Abbot’s Hill welcomes a new Headmistress, Mrs Elizabeth Thomas who was previously head of Stonar School in Wiltshire. Mrs Thomas succeeds Mrs Kerstin Lewis who led the school successfully for sixteen years.

At St. Helen’s girls are encouraged to take an active involvement in their learning as part of a broad education that promotes independent learning and creative thinking.

Independent Learning Weeks are a regular feature of the curriculum, enabling girls to work individually, and as part of a team, to produce pieces of work that they can be really proud of by taking control of their own learning. Further up the school there are opportunities for students to develop their critical thinking skills through activities such as the Year 9 Enquiry project where girls undertake individual student-led research on a topic of their choice.

Sixth Form students are encouraged to stretch themselves academically and to acquire

the skills and knowledge that will equip them for the challenges of life after school. All students are encouraged to take responsibility for their

learning through effective planning of their time and a critical approach to their studies.

Outside the classroom, a varied extra-curricular programme offers opportunities to develop key skills and to build confidence. Girls are encouraged to develop leadership skills and take the initiative through activities such as the Combined Cadet Force, operated jointly with Merchant Taylors’ School, or by taking on roles of responsibility within the school community.

By developing those core skills, upon leaving St. Helen’s, each girl is confident, self-reliant

and independent, ready to take their place in the adult world.

Celebrations are the order of the day for staff and pupils at Aldenham School in Elstree, having gained the top ISI grade - excellent - in every single category. This follows an integrated inspection of both the Senior and the Prep School by the Independent Schools Inspectorate which was

published in December 2012. The Report commends both areas of the School for enabling pupils to reach their full potential in all aspects of their lives; highlighting the excellent start to children in the Early Years Foundation Stage, through to “the excellent academic achievement and outstanding levels of personal development” enjoyed by all pupils in the School so that they attain “the character and skills to meet the challenges of life beyond school, exemplified by high levels of self-confidence and mutual respect.”

The team of eleven Inspectors recognised the great strengths of the whole School, highlighting in particular the atmosphere of mutual respect and understanding between teachers and pupils. The School was also praised for its outstanding links with parents and the wider community. The effective learning in the Prep School fulfils its aims outstandingly well to stand its pupils in good stead as they prepare to move to the next stage in their schooling.

The Head of the Prep School, Mrs Vicky Gocher expressed her delight with the findings of the report: “Parents and pupils should be very happy to know that children here are receiving the best possible start to developing their abilities and talents over a wide spectrum.”

Mr James Fowler, Headmaster at Aldenham added: “Following ‘Excellent’ ISI reports in 2009, one for Boarding and one for all areas of education in the Foundation Stage, I am delighted that this latest ISI report reflects the remarkable opportunities that exist for both boys and girls from ages 3 to 18 in all sections of the school. It is very reassuring that the Inspection found that the committed and supportive teaching at Aldenham is of high quality which encourages pupils to develop all their

talents and abilities to the full. This achievement reflects the original hope of our Founder, Richard Platt, that an Aldenham education offers an outstanding experience in a particularly special setting.”

St Columba’s College provides a seamless education in an inspiring and challenging environment where boys from the age of four to 18 years old aspire to achieve their own best standard. A Catholic school, St Columba’s is open to boys of wide variety of religious traditions, with learning underpinned by the Columban code of

Courage, Courtesy and Compassion. While striving for academic excellence the College realises that it is whole-person education that best prepares boys for the world, recognising that moral and spiritual qualities are essential in achieving roundness of character.

In addition to the curriculum, there is an extensive Extra and Extended Curriculum ranging from the Duke of Edinburgh Award and the Combined Cadet Force to Young Enterprise. These activities develop qualities of self-knowledge, teamwork, leadership and resilience.

The College regularly wins trophies for rugby, athletics, basketball and other sports. There is a strong tradition of music, drama and public speaking with regular concerts and drama productions. Debating is very strong and, in February, the College again won the county final of the ESU Mace. The school’s strength lies in the combination of high expectations, a culture

of mutual respect and care, creating a stimulating happy environment in which boys thrive and learn, building firm foundations for confident socially-skilled pupils. The community is vibrant and the students are the best evidence of what a Columban education can produce.

Most of the Prep boys progress naturally to the Senior School, but each year a number leave for a range of other schools too. Academic performance is good, with boys winning scholarships every year; all are challenged from the earliest stages to ‘achieve their own best standard’. There is a high teacher to pupil ratio, and teaching assistants help throughout the school.

The College is proud of its strong reputation for pastoral care and both the Prep and Senior Schools have a well-developed house system, forging positive relationships and encouraging healthy competition.

There is an Open Afternoon in the Prep School on 28th February from 1.15-2.45pm, which is also the traditional grandparents’ day.

Fairley House, described in the sunday Times as ‘The Gold standard’ is london’s leading day school for children with specific

learning difficulties.

We offer an education almost unique in that educational Psychologists, with speech, language and Occupational Therapists are integrated into the school curriculum. We enjoy a central london location with excellent facilities such as a science laboratory, art room and outdoor play space. Fairley House addresses the difficulties of children between 5 and 14 with dyslexia and dyspraxia. Children’s learning styles have often not been catered for in their previous school, leading to failure and loss of confidence, but Fairley House offers them a ‘level playing field’ where everyone has similar difficulties. Children receive a rich, stimulating educational experience integrated with therapy and specialist teaching. Teaching is multi-sensory and children learn science, spelling, Geography and History through interesting, hands-on activities. There is a staff: pupil ratio of 1: 3.5. The average stay is two to three years after which children return to mainstream schooling with a new ‘can do’ attitude.

Our teaching is different. Children with specific learning difficulties benefit

from learning in a multi-sensory way. The negative side of dyslexia is so often emphasised but what of the strengths? We bring out pupils’ creativity and the wonderful visual sense that many dyslexics possess if properly nurtured. Our exciting displays of art work and design technology projects are a feature of the school.

A full range of sport is available at Fairley House school, includingtouch rugby, football, netball, hockey and cricket. We use Battersea Park as well as the Queen Mother’s sports hall and swimming pool. We play fixtures against other schools and our after school clubs offer a wide range of activities.

At Fairley House our intention is to provide your son or daughter with an educational experience which rivals that of any mainstream independent school.

We aim to develop children’s confidence and self-esteem, enabling their talent and enthusiasm to grow and shine. We emphasise the development of the whole child, helping him or her to gain confidence and self-esteem through an encouraging and nurturing ethos. The children have opportunities to develop sound academic and social skills and to become independent. At Fairley House, everyone succeeds.

100 YEARS OFASTON MARTIN

Aston Martin launches global celebrations marking a century of success

London marked the start of a year-long celebration of all things Aston Martin, with a ceremony in Chelsea’s Henniker Mews – the original home of the company that went on to become Aston Martin, founded on 15th

January 1913. Joining with the Aston Martin Heritage Trust to unveil a commemorative plaque, the sports car maker is lining up a special centenary edition of its new ultimate GT – the Vanquish – alongside the oldest Aston Martin in existence, A3.

The event recalls the day 100 years ago when founders Lionel Martin and Robert Bamford saw their new automotive venture incorporated as ‘Bamford and

Martin Ltd’. Production of the very first Aston Martin car, known as ‘Coal Scuttle’ commenced soon after. The ‘Aston’ element was inspired by Lionel Martin’s passion for hill climb competitions, in particular the Aston Clinton hill climb in Buckinghamshire.

Aston Martin CEO, Dr Ulrich Bez said: “I am proud to be celebrating 100 years of heritage and the best of British craftsmanship. “Aston Martin is known around the world for our leading design combined with advanced technology. Ours is the coolest luxury car brand on the planet and I am looking forward to our second century of building the world’s most desirable sports cars.”

THE LUXURY BRAND IS MARKING THE OFFICIAL ANNIVERSARYTHIS YEAR OF ITS FOUNDING 100 YEARS AGO.

Speaking at the unveiling, Roger Carey, Chairman of the Aston Martin Heritage Trust said: “It’s fitting, I think, that we have both the newest and oldest Aston Martins in existence here at Henniker Mews, where this remarkable story began 100 years ago. This is where the workshops were first located and the Aston Martin Heritage Trust felt it was important to record the centenary by creating and displaying a plaque commemorating the start of such an iconic car business.”

Aston Martin Chairman, David Richards said: “It’s great to be back at the place where it all started. The Aston Martin story reaches a significant milestone in 2013 with our unique heritage and fiercely independent tradition inspiring exciting chapters yet to come. “We look forward to sharing this milestone with our team, our partners, our customers and Aston Martin enthusiasts with events taking place worldwide over the next 12 months.”

In the UK, a week-long Aston Martin festival will take place from 15th July to 21st July. Designed to appeal to owners and enthusiasts of the brand, the Centenary Week will include ‘open house’ activities at Aston Martin’s exclusive Gaydon headquarters, including factory-based events and driving tours and will culminate in a 1,000-guest ‘birthday party’ on Saturday 20th July and a spectacular Centenary gathering in Central London on Sunday 21st July.

This highlight of the centenary celebrations will be held in partnership with the Aston Martin Heritage Trust and the Aston Martin Owners Club and will feature 100 of the brand’s most iconic cars in a multi-million pound timeline display. The event will also see one of the largest gatherings of Aston Martins in the 100-year history of the great British marque.

In addition, appearances at iconic events throughout 2013 including Nürburgring 24-Hours, Silverstone Classic, Villa D’Este, Le Mans 24-Hours and Pebble Beach will ensure that the celebration is truly global.

A3 – Aston Martin prototype (1921) The first Aston Martin, named Coal Scuttle was built in 1914. Following Coal Scuttle and the Great War, three more prototype cars were built including Bunny (no longer in existence) and chassis number A3 which was the third Aston Martin ever built and the oldest in existence. The car is now owned by the Aston Martin Heritage Trust.

With this year’s Oscars taking place on Sunday 24th February, want to hit up your next big event like an A-list celeb?

We consulted top fashion and beauty experts to find out how you can take a paparazzi-approved pic, avoid wardrobe malfunction, and rock any red carpet.

It’s all About the Cocktail Dress You likely don’t have the six-figure budget or 13-person glam squad that your favourite stars do, but that doesn’t mean you can’t still look stunning. Celeb stylist Phillip Bloch — who wrote The Shopping Diet: Spend Less & Get More— says that it’s really all about the dress, anyway. “Have a cocktail dress always at the ready,” he advises. “Cocktail has become the new black tie, so you can always get away with a cute little black dress. And that LBD can be green or blue or purple.” The best

part? You don’t have to spend a fortune on it. “With Facebook photo tagging, real women can’t always wear the same exact dress twice anymore,” he says. “Find clothes that are transformational. Don’t buy something you will only wear once. Know what you can do with it afterwards.”

Draw a Line Between Sexy and tartyThere’s nothing wrong with being sexy or seductive, but you don’t want to look tarty. To avoid showing too much skin with your dress, as with your makeup, be sure you are playing up one feature and not all of them. If you have a high slit, we advise against doing a plunging neckline. If you have a backless dress, keep the hemline from creeping up too high. If nothing else, show your shoulders. That’s a great feature on anyone. Think before opting for a skintight frock. If you go with a ‘standing dress,’ you might not be able to dance, sit, or eat.

Don’t Overdo the Makeup You may think that this is the time to go all-out

with your makeup. Whatever you do, don’t. “This is not the time to try something new, like 12-inch fake eyelashes … A little bit goes a long way” Bloch says, adding that you should pick one thing that’s easy to finesse but doesn’t require constant upkeep. “Bold red lips are great, but don’t do this and a smoky eye. Pick one. You only want to take a lip gloss and maybe some mascara with you, so know your limits.” Ying Chu, Marie Claire’s beauty director, offers up a great trick for intensifying your eyes for photos without looking overly made up: “Take a black kohl pencil and dot it along your lash line, between your eyelashes, before applying mascara.”

Go for Some Killer Heels Always wear a heel when venturing to a party, noting Gwyneth Paltrow’s penchant for wearing sky-high seven-inchers. The higher the better. Platforms are the easiest in this set to walk in, but test them out in advance — wear them around the house for a couple hours — to make sure you can stand and walk in them without toppling over. Also, make sure the shoes are padded so they are a bit more comfortable.

If You Can’t, Opt for a Wedge If you know you won’t make it two steps without a rolled ankle in stilettos, wedges are a good compromise. They are obviously more comfortable, or you can go with a thicker heel. In rare cases, flats work. A flat works really well with a ball gown or a full skirt, but it doesn’t look chic with a fitted dress or, say, a mermaid silhouette.” And make it a jeweled sandal, not just a flip flop.

Tame those Flyaways If you plan on wearing your hair in a smooth updo or ponytail, like Blake Lively so often

does, “toss a clear brow gel in your evening clutch. Her favorite go-to product? The new Flyaway Tamer from John Frieda Brush the wand over flyaways around your hairline and part whenever you’re checking your lipstick. “No Photoshop needed later!”

Make Your Best Pap-Worthy Pose Whether paparazzi are swarming or you are taking a few photos yourself, you want to make sure you look your best. Always puts an arm on your hip and lean against the person you are posing with … You lose a lot of your body and it makes you look slimmer.” It’s all about the grin. “Smile, or flirt, with your eyes,” she says. “Don’t smile too big with your mouth.”

Be Strategic with JewelleryAlways focus on one statement bold piece per look, but be careful — don’t overcrowd your neck, arms, and fingers with jewellery. If you’re wearing earrings, you can wear a bracelet, and if you are wearing a necklace, you can wear a ring,” she says. Case in point: Heidi Klum, who paired her striking Lorraine Schwartz diamond and ruby necklace (worth $3 million!) with only a pinky ring.

Don’t Get on the Worst-Dressed ListBe wary of making too bold a statement, like a white dress to a friend’s wedding or a crazy new trend that hasn’t made its way to popular culture just yet. What is a head-to-toe catwalk look that has just come off the runway at London Fashion Week may not necessarily look stylish in a real situation, also this month they are showing their Autumn/Winter 2013 Collections so you don’t want to be out of season, and end up on the worst-dressed list.

Page 60: St Albans Life Magazine February 2013

With the likes of TOWIE’s Maria Fowler, and several other celebrities all benefiting from the amazing results of VASER Lipo, Dr Jain’s high definition body

contouring practice is growing from strength to strength! VASER Lipo uses revolutionary new ultrasound technology which removes stubborn pockets of fat resistant to diet and exercise. The procedure has been hailed as ‘six pack surgery’ as it is even possible to reveal your hidden six pack with this revolutionary form of liposuction.

Dr Jain will not only get you looking fit, you’ll look younger, more energetic and in one word, fantastic. You’ll want to use that new body of yours. With no hospital stay, little bruising and minimal incisions VASER Lipo is the answer.

Reshape your body and invigorate your lifeTraditional liposuction is like sculpting with a shop vac. Everything gets sucked and chipped away without any detail. VASER 4D liposculpture is like taking a fine chisel and tapering each and every curve; every angle is perfect and muscular.

Its not just liposuction. Its VASER 4D Sculpt.VASER 4D Liposculpture is a revolution to the cosmetic surgery industry. At its inception, liposuction was designed just to remove fat. Liposculpture is a whole new way of looking and designing the anatomy so that it fits you and your lifestyle like your body should. With the VASER technology, Dr Ravi Jain removes extra fat and tightens your skin around the new curves and muscles. He leaves certain deposits of fat to accentuate your muscles while removing others to create dips and valleys around them.

He sculpts your body into the ultimate harmony of art and science, talent and medicine

Who can have VASER 4D?The VASER 4D procedure is meant for people who are already in good

physical shape but have trouble achieving a defined ,athletic physique. Both men & women can be treated. VASER 4D is not mean for people

who are very overweight or obese. The procedure depends heavily on skin retraction to help define the anatomical results. For people who are overly heavy, the skin has stretch beyond where VASER could help it retract. Please ask Dr Ravi Jain what other cosmetic options you may have if this describes you.

How does VASER work?VASER is an advanced medical ultrasound technology (VASER stands for Vibration

Amplification of Sound Energy at Resonance). During surgery, the VASER probe emits sound energy that literally liquefies fat tissue before it is gently suctioned away. In traditional liposuction, the fat is just sucked away - taking blood vessels, nerves and important connective tissue with it - resulting in severe pain, a longer recovery and mediocre results. With VASER, the liquid fat is easier to suction away, far gentler on the body and can be sculpted to enhance muscle appearance.

Can you say “Confidence boost” ?Just imagine how you would feel without any extra fat, keeping you from your own carefree lifestyle. No more worrying about how that bikini will fit, or swimming with a T-shirt on. No more crash diets/ No more staring in the mirror, wishing you were slimmer.

Areas commonly treated: Double Chin & Jowls Bingo Wings (Upper arms) Saddle Bags / Love handles Upper / lower abdomen Inner / outer thighs

Who wants a hottie tummy?Do you have stubborn pockets of fat that just won’t disappear no matterhow hard you exercise or diet? If so, the VASER Lipo may well be for you.

Dr Ravi Jain is one of a few experts in VASER high definition liposculpture in the world. He practices from his Harpenden & Harley Street clinics. Please call Riverbanks Clinic on 01582762877 to book in for an exploratory consultation.

After a spell of very cold weather to start the year, it’s now time to get those legs ready for spring – but nearly a third of us suffer from the embarrassment that comes with varicose veins. So how do you avoid

them? Mr Sanjeev Sarin, lead Consultant Vascular Surgeon at Spire Bushey Hospital, shares his five top tips with us:

MoisturiseAnother good reason to keep those legs smooth – regular moisturising results in healthy skin

RestAfter a long day at work, ensure you rest and put your feet and legs up

Cover upStockings, tights and even under-the-knee socks can be helpful

No bruisingTry to avoid rough games like volleyball as bruising can sometimes trigger varicose veins

Get treatedMake sure your veins are treated right after they appear. The sooner they’re operated on, the easier they are to remove

Unsightly bulging veins, aching legs, swollen ankles, itchy skin at the ankles, and ulcers that will not heal are all signs of underlying venous problems. These days, early treatment is both effective and long lasting. Gone are the days of ‘stripping’ veins with extensive bruising and weeks off work. Treatment of varicose veins

continues to advance with techniques becoming less invasive, and with a quicker return to normal activity. Most techniques can now be undertaken under ‘twilight’ anaesthetic (sedation combined with local anaesthetic).

These latest techniques start with assessing the problems within the veins, determining the source and extent, and then undertaking endoluminal ablation – the favoured alternative to the old ‘stripping’ technique – of the offending veins, where lasers are used to obliterate them. Some other treatments are still evolving so they are not offered as ‘first line’, but can be undertaken after due consideration.

All techniques are offered at Spire Bushey Hospital in Watford. Consultant Vascular Surgeon Mr Sanjeev Sarin takes time with all of his patients to discuss the pros and cons associated with each technique, and is happy to advise on the exact treatment options which will be tailored to your needs.

Mr Sarin has a weekly clinic at Spire Bushey Hospital. He is supported by an experienced team of vascular technologists, nurses, radiologists and anaesthetists, ensuring excellent results with minimum fuss.

Design that echoes your desireSimple, elegant and sophisticated are all phases that epitomise the Mossini brand. Perfect in proportion and

Plywood is made from solid wood and far stronger than alterna-tives such as MDF or particle boards. By cross laminating, plywood is even stronger than solid wood and does not show signs of shrinkage, swelling or splitting with a much higher strength to weight ratio. This makes the use of plywood the first choice where strength, flexibility, durability are key elements in the choice of material. During its manufacture, plywood creates far less wastage than the sawing of solid wood for furniture construction resulting in the conservation of timber. Why Plywood ?

Less wastage Environment friendly Stronger than MDF or particle board Quality alternative to traditional products Ideally suited for a bathroom environment

The award-winning agency . . . . . . where integrity counts.

Hello Barnet! In January we were delighted to open our tenth office,

in High Barnet. Occupying one of the most prominent sites in Barnet – the Exchange Buildings on the corner of St Albans Road and Barnet High Street – our new office covers the areas of Hadley Wood, Arkley, Cockfosters, Brookmans Park, Radlet, South Mimms and Potters Bar, as well as High Barnet and New Barnet.

As an established estate agent in North and North West London for nearly fifty years, we have many clients that come back to us time and time again. A common trend we encounter is as our clients start families they look to move away from the centre of London, perhaps looking for a more rural lifestyle, or in the search for property with a larger garden and more space generally, whilst still desiring easy access to the City and West End. The opening of our new office in Barnet allows us to offer homes in this desired greater geographic area, from village cottage to country estate.

Working closely with their clients Your fusion helped create a quite unique home in the centre of Radlett. A briefing was given to the Fusion team to lighten up a very traditional Tudor home and design an interior that is totally

contemporary yet works with the exterior. All windows ideally to be made larger where possible and as much Glass introduced to the home.

The design team at your fusion explored various possibilities of achieving their clients desires and after a couple of further meetings set out to design what can only be described as an unbelievable home. The attention to detail of the highest quality shines through. The clients left the entire design and procurement to the Fusion team. In addition to removing the centre of the house and replacing it in glass, all windows at the rear were made full height. Ground floor are all bifolds and first floor all open to glazed Juliet balconies.

Internally the clients wanted flexible living that can be cosy one day, the next is a party home. Full height sliding pocket doors were designed

and the layout is sensational. From the ground floor out to the garden is seamless with the same porcelain flooring. In fact on a decent day you’re not quite sure if you’re inside or out! Bathrooms and kitchens are typical fusion using Poggenpohl and CP Hart design and products. The walnut floating staircase with glazed balustrades is totally unique and is one of the homes many wow factors. A gym, steam room and new pool house have also been created. In total there are 5/6 bedrooms, 5 bathrooms, lounge, kitchen dining room, TV room and study.

The only reason this stunning home is on the market is so the clients can buy a new home from Fusion!

Heronslea have built a superb new 6-bedroom detached family home over three floors in Loom Lane, Radlett that offers 5,600 sq.ft of sumptuous accommodation in one of the village’s most sought-after locations. Now available through Village Estates, it

is offered for sale at £2,950,000. Finished to the highest specification, for which Heronslea are renowned, ‘The Belvedere’ is set behind electronic gates and a sweeping carriage driveway, with room for 4/5 cars.

As befits a house of this prestige, its front elevations are majestic and impressive, built from the finest traditional materials to reflect its status - with a plot size in excess of a third of an acre. The name – ‘The Belvedere’ - is very aptly chosen, as it derives from the Italian: bel meaning beautiful and vedere to see. It is a home to be both envied and enjoyed!

The hall has a staircase that leads to the feature galleried landing. A fabulous and spacious kitchen/family room (26’7” x 24’6”) leads onto the rear patio and exceptionally large 190ft south-west facing rear garden.

The ground floor accommodation includes a lounge (23’7” x 16’8”) also with access to the terrace and garden, well-proportioned dining room, library/study; coat lobby and guest cloakroom. The double integral garage is accessed through the utility room at the rear of the kitchen.

All the first floor rooms are accessed from the galleried landing. The master bedroom suite has a large dressing room and ensuite bathroom

and leads to its own private terrace with attractive garden views. The other three bedrooms on this floor also have ensuites – two with a bathroom and the other a shower room. Two further bedrooms and a family bathroom are on the top floor, together with an exceptionally large leisure room (34’ x 15’3”) and a very useful storage room.

In common with all Heronslea homes, ‘The Belvedere’ has been built with the highest quality and finest design, combining traditional quality finishes with the latest features designed for a 21st century lifestyle. It incorporates high energy efficiency standards plus state-of-the-art home automation and control systems including Control 4, Lutron lighting, CCTV, video entry system and alarm. All floors have underfloor heating and there is individually-controlled air conditioning to every room.

The location of ‘The Belvedere’ could not be better, being a short walk to the excellent range of shops in Radlett village centre, the railway station with fast links to central London and the continent via Eurostar, local places of worship and also its nearness to the excellent local nurseries and schools. The motorway network is also close at hand via the M1 and M25 with Luton airport only 15-20 minutes’ drive.

The jewel in the majestic crown of the award-winning ‘Wall Hall’, is undoubtedly the iconic ‘Mansion House’, formerly the home of eminent dignitaries including Joseph Kennedy and J P Morgan, and a great favourite of renowned guests, such as the late Queen Mother. This Listed Building, latterly

renovated and reconfigured by Octagon Developments Ltd around six years ago in semi-rural Aldenham, retains a host of original period features, whilst boasting seven, highly individual modern, contemporary styled homes within - and is peacefully surrounded by parkland, golf course and greenbelt countryside. Surrounded by Humphry Repton’s landscaped parkland and on approximately 55 acres of sprawling countryside, is this luxurious residence forming part of a magnificent Grade II listed neo-Gothic revival mansion with an impressive castellated facade, created in the early 19th century.

Skillfully interior designed throughout and decorated in warm, neutral tones of mushroom and taupe, this stunning residence exudes grandeur with its high ceilings, sash windows, velvet carpeting, and solid wood or ceramic tiled floorings, complemented by hi-tech intercom, alarm and media systems. Priced at £2.75m, this truly spectacular and stylish property has delightful, private garden areas off the receptions and kitchen, and two underground parking spaces with storage facility. Other features include a walled garden, additional visitors parking, exclusive use of tennis courts and private gym, bespoke children’s recreational area, grassed area for ball games and landscaped Italian garden.
