John Kim The Christmas season has passed, and liturgical season of Ordinary Time has come, but the beauty and peace of the coming of our Lord can still be felt in our hearts. That beauty comes upon us wherever we are, even in a house as lowly as the humble manger. Yet we were blessed to celebrate the Christmas season in a most beautiful and sacred house, Christ the King Catholic community. It is a lovely house every day of the year, but during Christmas it certainly shines more brightly. This is be- cause of the generosity of our parishioners. It would be impossi- ble to recognize them all by name, because there were so many who worked behind the scenes to make our sacred liturgies and gathering spaces reverent and special during this holy season. But I must offer my thanks and deepest gratitude to the following: The King's Choir for blessing so many of our Masses with music, and the special Christmas Carol Concert The instrumentalists, groups and soloists who performed at the Christmas Carol Concert The Spanish Choir and everyone who provided music for Our Lady of Guadalupe liturgies The musicians and singers who provided music for all other Masses The Guadalupanos for coordinating the many events and liturgies honoring Our Lady of Guadalupe The ushers who welcomed everyone into the Masses and performed many other tasks The Sacristan, Women’s Ministry volunteers and many other volunteers for decorating and un-decorating the sanctuary Volunteers for hosting the New Year's Eve reception The Knights of Columbus for setting up extra chairs, ushering and many other tasks The altar servers, Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion and Lectors who fulfilled their ministry gifts by serv- ing at the many Masses The parishioners who made donations to provide the many, many poinsettias all around the church And to all our parishioners for your faithful support of your parish and me. I also want to offer a heart-felt thanks to the Guadalupanos for providing the funds needed to purchase eight stunning chalices that were blessed and offered the Precious Blood for the first time at our Christmas litur- gies. I am truly humbled by the generosity of spirit that exists here at Christ the King. May God bless each and every one of you, and I pray for health and happiness for all in the New Year. Thank you for joining us at Christ the King Catholic Church. We are happy to have you with us today, and hope that you feel welcome. Our parish is a very vibrant community of faith. Are you new to the Catholic Church? Have you been away from the Church for some time? You are invited to worship with us. Contact our parish office if you would like to learn more about the Catholic faith, discuss plans for marriage or baptism, or schedule a chat with Fr. John. Faith Formation

Holy Door When we think about pilgrimages, we probably think about medieval peo-ple walking great distances to awe-inspiring churches. Yet, Pope Francis de-scribes what is at the heart of pilgrimage and encour-ages us to each make one during this Jubilee of Mercy. He writes that "life itself is a pilgrimage, and the human being is a visitor, a pilgrim traveling along the road, making his way to the desired destination" (MV, no. 14). Pope Francis encourages each of us to make a pil-grimage to the Holy Door in our diocese some time during this Jubilee of Mercy. Being committed to the journey of pilgrimage helps us focus our attention on our spiritual journey and walk closer with God. Similarly, our daily jour-ney to live out the mercy of God "is also a goal to reach and requires dedication and sacrifice" (MV, no. 14). 1. With your family or a parish group, plan a pilgrimage to

the Holy Door within your diocese for some time during this year.

2. Each day, give yourself one small goal of mercy, com-passion, and love to journey toward—for example, be-ing kind to a difficult coworker—so that, by those ac-tions, you are able to walk closer to God on the pil-grimage of Christian life.

The Holy Doors in the Diocese of Austin are at St. Jo-seph Mission in Mason, Sacred Heart in Waco, Holy Trinity in Corn Hill, St. Mary Catholic Center in College Station, and St. Mary Cathedral in Austin.

YOUTH

Year of Mercy

Mercy Defined - Thinking of Others Reading I: Isaiah 62:1–5 (Jerusalem the Lord’s bride) Reading II: 1 Corinthians 12:4–11 (variety and unity) Gospel: John 2:1–12 (the wedding at Cana)

Key Passage: “When the wine gave out, the mother of Jesus said to him, “They have no wine.” (John 2:3) Question for Adult: When have you been in need: sick, hungry, lonely and a person was lovingly compassionate to you? How did their actions show God’s mercy? Question for Youth: When have you been in need and someone has helped you?

Works of Mercy As we continue to celebrate the Year of Mercy, let us look at an explanation on the Works of Mercy. Mercy is a virtue that influences a person’s compassion for another. Mercy inspires the will to ease another’s misfor-tunes or suffering in either body or soul. The corporal and spiritual works of mercy are charitable actions that extend God’s compassion and mercy to those in need. However, the works of mercy are more than ges-tures or obligations. To gain merit in heaven, the ac-tions must be performed as acts of love for our neigh-bor as a response to our deep love for God. The cor-poral and spiritual works of mercy work together as paths to Salvation. They give Christians ways to live according to Jesus’ Great Commandment. And they are particularly important to pay attention to now as we celebrate the Holy Year of Mercy, called for by Pope Francis. Let us use this Jubilee Year to become the “Church of Mercy” that Pope Francis calls us to be.
