• HOW CAN I KEEP GROWING

IN GRACE? 6:1-23

• WHAT HAPPENS WHEN I

FALL? 7:1-25

Page 2: Ssm Romans Week 6 - 092709

POINT 11.

Positional sanctification is based on

the attitude of reckoning, whereas

progressive sanctification is based

on the attitude of yielding.

Page 3: Ssm Romans Week 6 - 092709

POINT 12.

Since the decision was made when you got

saved, then the course of action when

tempted is to

•mentally meditate on Christ and what he

has done for you

•spiritually resort to God in prayer for him

to strengthen you

•physically submit your members to doing

something in ministry that will occupy you

Page 4: Ssm Romans Week 6 - 092709

POINT 13.

There is nothing more effective in

changing your state than renewing

your mind.

Page 5: Ssm Romans Week 6 - 092709

POINT 14.

Sin is really good at covering-up

your lack of life.

Page 6: Ssm Romans Week 6 - 092709

POINT 15.

The near benefit of being a slave

to righteousness is progressive

holiness.

Page 7: Ssm Romans Week 6 - 092709

POINT 16.

The wages of sin is death,

even if you are a Christian.

I. REDEMPTION FROM LEGALISM,

ROMANS 6:1-11

1. "Reckon," is the essential of

faith,11

2. "Let not," is the essential of

submission, 12

3. "Yield," is the essential of

consecration, 13

Page 10: Ssm Romans Week 6 - 092709

Thesis:

Salvation frees us for

spiritualwarfare between the two

natures in the believer.

Page 11: Ssm Romans Week 6 - 092709

Point 1.

If you could not keep the law to get

to heaven, you cannot keep the law

to get to holiness.

SEVEN TYPES OF FLESH

1) The soft substance of the body, not including bones

and blood, Gen 2:21

2) The whole physical body with the breath, Gen 6:17

3) The whole being of man in distinction from the

beasts, Gen 37:27

4) The whole human race, Gen 6:125) The whole

humanity of Christ, Heb 5:7

6) The body of Christ giving life, John 6:51

7) The body you were born in, Rom 7:25; 2 Cor 10:3

Page 13: Ssm Romans Week 6 - 092709

Point 2.

Legalism breeds carnality.

Page 14: Ssm Romans Week 6 - 092709

Point 3.

The Holy Spirit gives you the

lifenecessary to keep his law.

Page 15: Ssm Romans Week 6 - 092709

AXIOM OF TRUE SPIRITUALITY

To say you must sin is to deny the word

of God, to say you cannot sin is to

deceive yourself, but to say you need

not sin is to state God's provision.

Point 3.

The Holy Spirit gives you the

lifenecessary to keep his law.

Page 16: Ssm Romans Week 6 - 092709

DEFINITION:

Concupiscenceis unlawful desire for

sexual pleasure, or abnormal desire

for worldly goods.

Page 17: Ssm Romans Week 6 - 092709

POINT 4.

God gave the law to convict us

of our carnality by displaying

the demands of his holiness.

Page 18: Ssm Romans Week 6 - 092709

POINT 5.

Part of the consequence of carnality

is that we go back into bondage and

cannot get out of what we at first

willingly chose.

Page 19: Ssm Romans Week 6 - 092709

POINT 6.

We learn from the law that Jesus was

the only one to fulfill it.

• When I look into my heart and

perceive its infinite wickedness I

think it's a pit deeper than Hell.

—Jonathan Edwards

Page 21: Ssm Romans Week 6 - 092709

• I cannot pray, but I sin; I cannot hear, or

preach a sermon, but I sin; I cannot give an

alms, or receive the sacrament, but I sin; no,

I cannot so much as confess my sins, but my

confessions are still aggravations of them. My

repentance needs to be repented of, my tears

need washing, and the very washing of my

tears needs still to be washed over again with

the blood of my Redeemer.

—John Berridge,

English revivalist, 1716-1793

Page 22: Ssm Romans Week 6 - 092709

POINT 7.

A Christian may deceive himself for

a time, but he can't end up justifying

himself.

Page 23: Ssm Romans Week 6 - 092709

THREE THINGS ABOUT SINNING

1. Paul admits he is accountable for

his own actions (Rom 6)

2. Paul admits he will reap from his

actions (Gal 6)

3. Paul admits he is not really

committing the sins (Rom 7:17)

Page 24: Ssm Romans Week 6 - 092709

Point 8.

The most certain proof you are a

Christian is a love for God and a

simultaneous struggle with sin.

Page 25: Ssm Romans Week 6 - 092709

Point 9.

Perfection is not possible in this life,

only perfecting warfare is.

Page 26: Ssm Romans Week 6 - 092709

Point 10.

Now that the soul has been cut-away

from the flesh, the operation of the

Bible in the life of the believer will

progressively remove it from sight.
