    What is SSI?

    Supplemental Security Income(SSI) is a ederal program thatprovides monthly payments to peoplewho have limited income and ewresources. SSI is or elderly people,

    as well as blind or disabled peopleo any age, including children.

    To get SSI, you must:

    Be age 65 or older;

    Be totally or partially blind; or Have a medical condition that keeps

    you rom working and is expected tolast at least one year or result in death.

    How much can you get?

    The basic monthly SSI payment or2013 is the same nationwide. It is:

    $710 or one person; or

    $1,066 or a couple.

    Not everyone gets the same amount.You may get more i you live in astate that adds money to the ederalSSI payment. You may receive less

    How do you qualiy or SSI?

    Your incomeYour income includes the moneyyou earn, your Social Security benefts,your pensions and the value o itemsyou get rom someone else, such as

    ood and shelter.Where you live aects the amount

    o income you can have each monthand still get SSI. Dierent states havedierent rules.

    Things you ownYou may be able to get SSI i your

    resources (the things you own) are worth

    no more than $2,000 or a person or$3,000 or a couple. We do not counteverything you own when we decidei you can get SSI. For example, we donot count a house you own i you live

    in it, and we usually do not count yourcar. We do count cash, bank accounts,stocks, and bonds.

    You must be a U.S. resident

    You must live in the United States orNorthern Mariana Islands to get SSI. Iyou are not a U.S. citizen, but you arelawully residing in the United States,you still may be able to get SSI. For

    Other benefts

    To receive SSI, you also must applyor any other cash benefts you may beable to get. I you get SSI, you usuallycan get benefts rom the SupplementalNutrition Assistance Program (SNAP)

    and Medicaid, too. Medicaid helps paydoctor and hospital bills, and SNAPhelps pay or ood.
