Performance Notes

Kyrie eleison is the first section of the sung Ordinary of the Mass. Due to the simplicity of the text it ahs been a favorite of composers for centuries. it is interesting that the language of the Kyrie eleison is actually Greek, while the rest of the sung Ordinary is in Latin.

This setting of the Kyrie is lyrical, with beautiful, sensitive melodies. There will be plenty of opportunites for rubato. Repetition is altered to provide color and contrast. The gentle rhythms assist the flowing quality of the music.

It is recommended that the words Kyrie and Christe be sung with a puckered "ee" sound. This "ee" sound occurs frequently and may become harsh and brittle if not altered. The voices should follow the rise and fall of the musical lines, allowing for a gradual crescendo and de- crescendo to occur throughout. It is important to follow the n.b. (no breath) signs in measures 10, 18,36, and 44.

Use a warm tone quality throughout. Even when you sing forte at measure 3 1, be sure the tone remains round and warm. Phrasing should be gentle, generally following commas and periods. Be sure at measure 47 you have enough breath to sing to the end. When your director gives the cutoff, stand very still. Your director will signal you when it is time to move. You may have an aesthetic experience with this one.
