PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE Dear Parents, Confirmation This week we are working intensely with the Confirmation candidates in order to fulfil one aspect of our Vision: To enrich the faith journey of our students and their families. All families are invited to join with us on Friday evening at 7pm as our Candidates are confirmed by Msgr Anthony Ireland, Episcopal Vicar for the Eastern Region. Yesterday our students worked through a day of reflection and preparation for the Sacrament of Confirmation. Please read further on in this newsletter their reflections of the day. Safety As you will be well aware Mrs Lake has been leading our school in ensuring successful play opportunities for all the students. Some of these initiatives have included a playground roster and a new borrowing system for sports equipment. We have been working with the P-2 teachers and have successfully trialled that at the end of recess/lunch, the P-2 students line up alongside the Year 3-6 children and wait for their teachers in a central place, rather than walking up to their homeyard. This is allowing for increased supervision and consistency in toileting prior to heading into class. The staff of SsPP are continually working toward providing a safe learning environment that promotes a strong sense of community. Insight SRC Surveys Last week Insight SRC surveys were sent home to all families. These surveys can be completed on paper (as per the envelope) or online (as per the explanatory letter found in the envelope). The more survey data we collect, the more valuable our results. Please take the time to complete these surveys! They are due next Friday 24th August. NOTE: If completing online, please use Explorer as we have had reported difficulties with Chrome Staff Learning Last night at our professional learning team meeting (PLT) staff participated in an Inquiry walk through. This is an opportunity for teachers in levels to present to their colleagues the learning that is taking place in the area of Inquiry. This term we are focused on the history curriculum. The BIG question that P-6 students are all inquiring into is: Why have some things changed and some things stayed the same?

• Junior school teachers showcased the learning that is focussed on the history of our school, parish and our local community • Middle school teachers showcased the learning that is focussed on Indigenous history up to the time of European settlement • Senior school teachers showcased the learning that is focussed on European settlement up until present time

As you are aware the classrooms are open each morning so please feel to come in and take a look at the learning taking place… or even better, talk with your children about their learning and the questions they may have about particular events or periods in history! Friendship Day A reminder of our Friendship Day celebrations this Friday. Students are invited to come dressed in casual clothes with a gold coin donation to the Alannah and Madeline Foundation. We will have a visit from Playground Craze who will perform for us from 9 - 10am in the Performing Arts room (make sure that you are on time for school!!) We will enjoy a Sushi Lunch at 1pm. It is also assembly day and room 8 will be presenting. This week I leave you with you the following to reflect on from renowned speaker, author and educator James Anderson…. “Mistakes are proof you are trying; correcting mistakes is proof you are growing” Yours in Christ, Anita Kelliher

SCHOOL NEWS

EXTRA CURRICULAR NEWS Basketball Program All students are reminded to wear their sports uniform and to bring their own basketballs (if possible) each Friday for our Aussie Hoops Basketball program. Please encourage your children to practise their skills in between the weekly sessions. District Athletics - Wednesday 29th August As communicated to parents in recent newsletters, performances at the School Athletics Day and throughout our Physical Education lessons have been used to select our athletes for the upcoming District Athletics. Each child is able to participate in a maximum of two individual events. Our selected Years 4-6 students will participate in the District Athletics on Wednesday 29th August. Please look for the CareMonkey permission for this event and refer to the email for all relevant details. If your child is NOT able to attend, please notify us as soon as possible so a replacement can be organised. Unfortunately we are not able to enter all of the Year 5 / 6 students for this carnival. Once again our school will be running the triple jump event and we would appreciate as much help from parents as possible! Please let us know if you are available. Thank you in anticipation. Hooptime Basketball - Monday 10th September All of our Year 5 / 6 students will participate in Hooptime on Monday 10th September. This will be a fabulous way to consolidate the learning from our weekly basketball program. Please notify us if your child will NOT be at school on Monday 10th September as the children are being placed into teams and we need to finalise the arrangements. Furthermore, if you would like to coach or score on the day, please let us know as soon as possible. Many thanks, Helen Kalac and Stephanie D’Astoli - Ss Peter & Paul’s Sport

This week the children will participate in a ‘mini experiment’ that will highlight the importance of handwashing. This task will be linked to our history unit of work, as history g ives us many examples of epidemics that were caused by diseases that can be facilitated by poor handwashing. All the children will be given the opportunity to use the ‘Glitterbug Hand Hygiene Training Kit’ to investigate how well they wash their hands. So far the children in Room 1 have really enjoyed taking part in this investigation!

“Let the Children Come to Me” Matthew 19:13-15

SCHOOL NEWS FROM THE RE DESK John 6:41-51 At this the Jews there began to grumble about him because he said, “I am the bread that came down from heaven.” They said, “Is this not Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How can he now say, ‘I came down from heaven’?”

“Stop grumbling among yourselves,” Jesus answered. “No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws them, and I will raise them up at the last day. It is written in the Prophets: ‘They will all be taught by God.’ Everyone who has heard the Father and learned from him comes to me. No one has seen the Father except the one who is from God; only he has seen the Father. Very truly I tell you, the one who believes has eternal life. I am the bread of life. Your ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness, yet they died. But here is the bread that comes down from heaven, which anyone may eat and not die. I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Whoever eats this bread will live forever. This bread is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.” Reflection:

1. Do we really listen to the meaning of what a person is actually saying? 2. When a situation occurs not to our liking do we whine or do we look deeper into it and try and discover the why’s and the how’s? 3. Do we give God the time of day in our lives or do we just ignore His message? 4. Do we live by what we believe or do we use it as a ‘convenience’ to get what we think we need?

SCHOOL NEWS

Wow! Look What’s Happening At Ss Peter & Paul’s! On Friday 17th August we are celebrating Friendship Day at Ss Peter & Paul’s. On this day students are encouraged to wear free dress and donate a gold coin to the Alannah and Madeline foundation. As part of this day we are excited to announce that The Playground Craze will be performing at our school. The Playground Craze is a band that makes music children love to listen to, because it sounds like the pop and hip hop songs they hear on the radio. The show - Resilience Rocks - teaches students practical skills to use to bounce back from adversity. Students will learn through song and drama what bouncing back means and what it looks like in different ‘real world’ contexts of young people. Key Themes featured in the show are Resilience, Friendship, Kindness, Finding Confidence, Problem Solving, Creative Thinking. Parents and younger siblings are invited to join us for the performance. The performance begins at 9:00 am and runs for 1 hour. It promises to be an entertaining hour full of fun. The performance will take place in the Performing Arts room. Hope to see you there! Our Kindness Tree

Joelle Lake Deputy Principal & Student Wellbeing Leader

Kindness and caring…two very simple words, but two actions that can change your world and the world around you. They are qualities that, when you practice them, bring happiness not only to others but back to you as well.

Everyday we have many choices to make in the way we treat other people and things. These little choices add up to big things. They define who we are as a person and our impact on the world.

Last Friday during our House Team Buddy activity students from P-6 created the leaves in shape of a love heart for our Kindness Tree. Students were given two hearts and wrote either words or a sentence on the hearts on ways we can show kindness or how we can be kind to others. Please stop by and have a look at the beautiful tree that has been created in the corridor outside Room One. Please take time to read the words and sentences that the students have written to inspire your actions.

Year 6 Confirmation Reflection

On Saturday the Confirmation candidates attended Reconciliation at 5pm. During Reconciliation we confessed our sins to Father Jerald and are now one step closer to their Confirmation. After Reconciliation, we attended the 6pm family mass and participated by being involved in the readings, prayers of the faithful and the offertory procession. Over the years we have been preparing for this sacrament after Baptism, Reconciliation, Communion and now the final sacrament, Confirmation Confirmation is a big step for us to take as we are now seen as an adult in the church community. School Advisory Board – Open Board Meetings in 2018 – Guests Welcome!

Several times a year, fellow parents in our school who are members of the School Advisory Board, meet to discuss topics relevant to the development and strategic direction of the school and to provide advice and insight to the school management team.

In early 2019 we will again seek new members. If you would like to see what goes on and how we contribute, before committing to being a member next year, we would like to welcome you as our guest to one of our remaining Board meetings for 2018.

This year the Board has shifted its responsibilities to be more focused on the school’s annual action plan and taking a long-term strategic view, rather than a direct day to day operational view. We’ve focused on learning from each other, continuously improving the way we operate and bringing our individual diverse talents to each meeting.

Our three remaining meetings will be held on the following days (subject to change):

• Tuesday Sep 11th, 7.30-9pm • Tuesday Oct 20th, 7.30-9pm • Tuesday Nov 30th, 7.30-9pm

If you would like to come as a guest to one of the meetings listed below, please feel free to reach out to myself, Anita or one of our current Board members (listed below). It’s a great way to help shape our amazing school for now and well into the future. Paul Di Gregorio Chairperson, on behalf of the School Advisory Board Board Members: Susie Germano, Nikki Jansson, Jason Venkataya, Sandra Hill, Sharyn Taylor, Mark Trajcevski, Joelle Lake, Fr Jerald, Anita Kelliher and Paul Di Gregorio
