PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

Dear Parents, Today we enter into our final week for the 2017 school year. It has been a year filled with new learning, new adventures and for some new friendships. Last night we celebrated with our Grade 6 students all that they have contributed to and received from the Ss Peter and Paul’s Community. At the Graduation mass we came together to give thanks for each one of them and pray that their future will be filled with the spirit of Jesus alive in them. I hope that they leave Ss Peter and Paul’s with a real understanding of what it means to live their lives as people who choose to live out the Gospel values of love, peace, justice and forgiveness. Many thanks to all the staff and parents who worked with such enthusiasm to make the Grade 6 Graduation a very special celebration. Today the Grade 6 students have enjoyed a fun day out at Monash Sports and Aquatic Centre, and on Friday the Staff will put on a special farewell morning tea for the Year 6 students. Meanwhile, our Grade 5 students have spent the day today reflecting and learning about ‘what it means to be a leader’ They have begun applying for their chosen leadership roles for 2018, and we plan to announce these at the End of Year mass next Tuesday at 11.30am. This Friday will be a chance for the Staff to farewell our Grade 6’s with a special morning tea. Children in Grade 6 do not need to bring morning tea on this day. Also on Friday, we will be having our final assembly for the year at 2.45pm. This will be presented by the Beginner children, and also the Grade 6’s. School reports and Portfolios of Work will be sent home this coming Friday 15th December. Monday evening we will have our School Carols on the oval. The children have all been practicing under the tuition of Mrs Fiona Markham. We are in for a real treat! Children are to arrive at 5.45, and we will begin at 6pm. Children have been encouraged to come dressed in red, green or white clothes - with a touch of Christmas! Our Grade 5’s will be selling glow sticks (50c), icy poles (50c) and cold drinks ($1). Money raised will go toward the G6GF fund for 2018. Families are encouraged to bring along a picnic rug and some dinner! We look forward to welcoming the Manningham Community Choir to this event also. Tuesday our whole school will conclude the academic year with a Thanksgiving Mass at 11.30am. We would love to have parents and grandparents join us. Children finish school next Tuesday 19th at 3.15pm. As we reach the end of the year it is timely to stop and reflect on the wonderful (and busy!) year that we have had at SsPP! Our garden underwent rejuvenation early on in the year and has been diligently maintained ever since under the watchful eyes of our Sustainability Captains. We sold off our produce to raise $34 which we have been able to reinvest into the garden for our summer crop. Our attendance at the Manningham Sustainability Conference was an opportunity for further learning also.

Digital Technology classes have become a much loved area of learning. All students from Prep - 6 have enjoyed building their skills across a range of applications, as well as ‘coding’ the beebots! Our admin team have also gone digital - with emailed newsletters, use of CareMonkey and of course the launch of our new website & app. Sport is always an important part of our curriculum and we all enjoyed SsPP Athletics Day. As well as our school based sport our school participated in a range of interschool sports including Hooptime and Hotshots tennis, where we made it through to the semi finals. We farewelled Mrs McInytre after 8.5 years of dedicated service to the community of Ss Peter and Paul’s. Italian language has steadily been heard more and more around our school, with our Prayer before meals being said daily in English as well as Italian! Italian Day was a huge success! Entertainment was provided by Fillipo on the piano accordion, and we all enjoyed lunch from Francesco at Zero95! Bravo and Grazie Signora!

Chess fever took over in Term 3, as a result of a visit from Leonid the Chess Master! Visitors from Manningham Seniors enjoyed coming along to compete with us, and we were well represented at a regional Chess competition in September. “Jack and the Beanstalk” set in the Appalachian

Mountains was a real highlight on our calendar. The cast and crew were magnificent and the costuming was superb. What a wonderful way to showcase the many talents of our community!

The Community Engagement Committee got off the ground in 2017. A hardworking group of parents whose mission was to reach out into the community to find partnering opportunities that would benefit the students and our school.

Our Sacramental programme was a significant part of our year and involved classroom learning as well as parent faith nights. We also participated in Parish liturgies through class weekday masses and Family masses held at the 6pm Saturday night mass. These opportunities model for us what it means to belong to a faith community as well as being an invitation to make stronger connections with our wider parish community.

SCHOOL NEWS We also established a partnership with our Parish St Vincent De Paul conference. Our Year 6 Faith and Service and Values Captains formed a Mini Vinnies group. We hosted a Mini Vinnies Conference with students from St Bede’s and we learnt how they run their program. For some Year Six students their family’s connection with Ss Peter and Paul’s concludes as far as their formal education. We farewell the following families and thank them for their contribution to our school and community and wish them well as they embark on their next stage of their journey: Noah A and family, Manisha B and family, Armin F and family, Mia G and family, Jack H and family, Stephanie L and family, Abbey M and family, Oscar M and family, Gregory N and family, Sienna P and family, Gareth R and family, Joseph S and family, Jessica W and family, Kristiana Z and family.

The time has come, to wish all our students and families a happy, holy and safe Christmas. May you find time to spend time with loved ones and reflect on what has

been, and anticipate what is yet to come.

GRADE 6 GRADUATION Farewell to Our Year Six Students On Tuesday 19th December we will say a final farewell to our Year Six students. The students in Years Prep to Five will line the hallway of the junior school corridor and office area to make a guard of honour for the seniors. The Year Six students will leave from the front door of the school. Parents of Year Six are asked to gather near the front steps at 3:10pm on Tuesday. Afterwards, the students will be able to take photos near the four square area of the playground, to allow the rest of the school students to be picked up in the front area. Uniform Signing Year Six students will be able to bring in an old item of school uniform, for signing on Monday 18th December. Please also send along a permanent marker (Sharpie pen) on this day. LAST CALL FOR LOST PROPERTY This is the final call for our lost property to be claimed for 2017. We will be sending

any school goods to the second hand uniform shop that are unclaimed and disposing of any other goods that we have in our tub. Many thanks for calling in to check the tub!

Dear Parents, Can you believe it is that time of the year again? It is time to begin gathering much needed supplies for our Mini Vinnie’s Christmas Hampers! This year we will be collecting children’s items, that will provide families with extra support for Christmas. We hope to maintain our efforts from previous years and create a large number of donations which our Parish conference of St. Vincent de Paul will distribute to local families in need. We will be collecting toys, clothes and baby items. We ask that the items are new, however any other pre-loved items can be donated to St. Vincent de Paul shops. Any toys donated must be left unwrapped please. Hampers will be placed in each classroom and one in the front office as per usual. All hamper items must be brought to school by Friday the 15th of December. These are special hampers which make an enormous difference to the families who receive them. The creation of these hampers is such a valuable experience for our students, who have the opportunity to reach out to those in need, especially during our inquiry units of Social Justice. I hope that as your family sits down for Christmas lunch, you can take a moment to remember the difference you have made for another family, who are able to enjoy this special occasion thanks to your enerous donations. Kind regards, Kristina Stephanou & Ss Peter and Paul’s Mini Vinnies Committee
