Senior News American Heart Month

Heart disease is the leading cause of death for men and women in the United States. Every year, 1 in 4 deaths are caused by heart disease.

The good news? Heart disease can often be prevented when people make healthy choices and manage their health conditions. Communities, health professionals, and families can work together to create opportunities for people to make healthier choices.

Make a difference in your community: Spread the word about strategies for preventing heart disease and encourage people to live heart healthy lives.

How can American Heart Month make a difference?

We can use this month to raise awareness about heart disease and how people can prevent it — both at home and in the community.

Here are just a few ideas:

Encourage families to make small changes, like using spices to season their food instead of salt.

Motivate teachers and administrators to make physical activity a part of the school day. This can help students start good habits early.

Ask doctors and nurses to be leaders in their communities by speaking out about ways to pre-vent heart disease. You can make healthy changes to lower your risk of developing heart dis-ease.

Controlling and preventing risk factors is also important for people who already have heart dis-ease.

To lower your risk:

Watch your weight.

Quit smoking and stay away from secondhand smoke.

Control your cholesterol and blood pressure.

If you drink alcohol, drink only in moderation.

Get active and eat healthy.

to evaluate new treatments. It is free to all seniors of Somerset County and caregivers, clas-

ses are limited. Tableland vans will be offered from your center to the closest center, if your

CHRONIC DISEASE SELF MANAGEMENT

Senior Discounts at Age 50, 55, 60, and 65 They say 50 is the new 30, but 30 never came with this many deals. With even the youngest Baby Boomers now in the over-50 demographic, retailers, grocers, travel companies, and restaurants are all competing for their business by offering discounts. And yes, some senior discounts really do kick in when you turn 50, as long as you’re a member of AARP and are willing to claim your senior discount when you shop, dine, or book. Some merchants offer deals for the 55-and-up crowd, while others’ discounts start at age 60 or even 65. To help you find the discounts you or your parents can enjoy now, we’ve grouped the most up-to-date deals we could find by age for 50, 55, 60, and 65. Remember that you can’t age out of these offers, either. The deals in the 50-and-up sec-tion still apply after you’re 65.

As always, when you’re deal hunting, there are two things to keep in mind:

Offers can change, so if you’re really set on getting a particular discount, call or go online to check that it’s still valid. That’s espe-cially true at chain restaurants, where many but not all locations may participate in an offer.

If you don’t see a senior discount at your favorite shop, go right ahead and ask.

Senior Discounts for Age 50+

Here’s a list of discounts you’re eligible for as an AARP member, starting at age 50. Here’s what you can get with that membership.

When you’re visiting museums, zoos, and botanical gardens, remember to ask about senior admission rates. Better yet, ask about free days, especially at museums. Many big-city museums have one day a month when admission is free to everyone – that’s just about the best discount you can get.

There are some unexpected savings out there if you care to find them. For example,

Your utility provider may offer a senior discount to help with the cost of electricity, gas, and water.

Your county tax office can let you know whether you’re eligible for property tax relief to reduce the amount you owe each year on your home.

Talk to your auto insurer to see if they have reduced rates for safe older drivers, especially if you’re retired and no longer com-muting to work.

Your local animal shelter may offer you a discounted or free adoption for your next dog, cat, or rabbit. Many shelters run Seniors-for-Seniors programs that match older adults with older adoptable pets that are calmer and easier to care for than puppies and kittens.

Many FFA chapters, animal shelters, and retailers offer low-cost vaccination clinics so you can keep your pets current on shots.

Finally, you may be able to earn a college degree tuition-free or just take college classes for fun. Frugal-living site The Penny Hoarder has put together a list of free college programs for seniors in every US state.
