SRC in Bavaria
SRC area ~ 1.150 ha (0.05 % of total arable land in Bavaria)
constant increase within the last five years
 average size ~ 1.1 ha

SRC characteristics
 SRC = short rotation coppice
intensive cultivations of fast growing tree species on
agricultural land
most commonly used: clonal breeding material of poplar
(populus balsamifera, populus tremula), willow (salix
viminalis)
short rotation period (3 to 10 years) depending on stand
density
average yield ranging from 8 to 12 t dry mass per ha and year
 plant once harvest several times

objectives
5
identify the total amount and location of areas suitable for
SRC on agricultural land using GIS software
predict potential biomass production of poplar related to site
conditions using yield functions
estimate potential yield and energy content of wood chips
visualize results by producing maps on community level
develop a GIS based decision support tool to implement
decentralized energy supply projects
6
legal restrictions
 excluded areas (biotopes, …)
 restricted areas (species protection
areas, landscape conservation areas, …)
KUP Scout model region
 permanent grassland areas
field areas
grassland areas
consider agricultural land use status or designated protection
areas before establishing SRC
growth limitations
KUP Scout model region
consider water supply as one of the most important site-specific
factors that affect growth and yield
Parameters:
− precipitation
− soil water capacity
− groundwater level
− evapotranspiration
− …
 identify suitable sites, prevent negative
effects e.g. on water availability
take into account other factors such as
temperature, nutrients, soil type, …
water supply [mm]
